It’s not fair that someone who is only 24 years old can write songs as well as Joshua Cockerill can. A lot of us old folk couldn’t write a song to save our lives, but this young kid whips off songs that stand alongside those of older, established artists, and they’re suitably impressed:

“Joshua Cockerill [of Animal Parts] is f***ing amazing. Buy his record. Now.”
Serena Ryder

“As a songwriter, Joshua is one of the bright lights on the Canadian scene, and has one of the best new voices I’ve heard. Both sonically and lyrically, his album towers above any first attempt I’ve heard recently. I’m going to wager that Joshua will be around for quite some time.”
Justin Rutledge

“The future looks bright for Joshua Cockerill”
Rich Terfry (Buck 65), CBC Radio 2 Drive

See? Working on his songs and his craft since adolescence, Cockerill has honed both into two amazing albums and an engaging live show. Serena Ryder and Justin Rutledge appeared on his debut solo album, “The Trick with your Heart I’m Learning to Do,” alongside seasoned players like Kendel Carson (Dustin Bentall), Shawn Creamer (The Beauties), Burke Carroll (Luther Wright & The Wrongs), John Dinsmore (NQ Arbuckle/Kathleen Edwards), Christine Bougie (side person to anyone who’s anyone), and his older brother, Greg Cockerill. He’s got songs that are tender and heartfelt, and, with Animal Parts, he rocks out with solid backing, great energy, and irresistible melodies. The kid’s good. Really good.

He’s a bit of a road warrior, touring with a band a bunch of times, and solo. He’s versatile, charismatic, and disgustingly talented. I’m told that the ladies think he’s rather cute as well. Previously, he rocked the StuDome back yard, stole the show at Dauphin Countryfest, played a wonderful rockin’ set at The Standard, and now, he’s coming to the Sunset Saloon, so he’s officially made it to the big time!

You might not have heard a lot of Joshua’s songs yet (although, if you listen to Tell the Band to Go Home or Steel Belted Radio, you surely have), but you’ll go home humming the songs and remembering the name. Join us for Joshua Cockerill on June 21.

90s Hitmakers ODDS, live @ Sunset Saloon, June 28!

If you listened to rock radio or turned on Much Music in the 90s, you know this band’s songs, but unlike some of the other bands you heard a million times, you liked these ones, and they hold up very well 20 years later!

The plan is to have an intimate, rockin’ bash in the back yard. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will have a stripped down, more acoustic set indoors, where seating will be much more limited. If we need to cut down the guest list due to a move indoors, first responders and people who PAY IN ADVANCE will get preferred admission!

Odds hits are the soundtrack to many music lovers’ experiences in the 90s. Smash hits included “Love Is the Subject,” “Heterosexual Man,” “Eat My Brain,” “It Falls Apart,” “Jackhammer,” and the #1 hit, “Someone Who’s Cool.” The band played a big part in this history of The Kids in the Hall (and the Kids starred in a couple of very memorable music videos (see them again below). They toured as the backing band for the legendary late, great Warren Zevon (who guested on “Jackhammer”) and extensively with Barenaked Ladies and The Tragically Hip. After the 90s hits, the band went on hiatus and lead singer Craig Northey went on to a solo career, as well as to tour with Kids in the Hall, record and tour with Colin James, as Strippers Union (including Rob Baker from The Tragically Hip, backed up by Odds rhythm section), and as half of Northey Valenzuela, who were responsible for the beginning and ending themes for CTV’s classic comedy “Corner Gas.”

The band regrouped without original singer/guitarist Steven Drake, capably replaced by Murray Atkinson, in 2008. Their album “Cheerleader,” was a return to form. The recently released a very strong EP, “The Most Beautiful Place on Earth,” which proves that this is more than just a nostalgia trip, this is the return of a band that sounds as vital and exciting as ever!

The band was named the Vancouver Canucks ‘house band’ of the 2010 and 2011 NHL playoffs. Odds performed the theme music to the CBC/IFC television series The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. They backed up Elvis Costello and Randy Bachman on Hockey Night in Canada!

To say that these guys are highly successful would be a major understatement. To see this band in an intimate house concert setting is an opportunity of a lifetime, and is not to be missed!

Special thanks to Romi Mayes at Sure Shot Bookings for making this amazing dream come true!

Last year I was thrilled to welcome one of my all-time favourite singer/songwriters to my house, as Shannon Lyon returned to Canada after a lengthy absence for a cross-Canada tour, making stops in several out-of-the-way locations, including some joker’s back yard! Hearing some of my all time favourite songs in my own backyard was a dream come true, and everyone who attended raved about the show afterward.

Well, we’re excited to welcome Shannon back again this year! Once again, he prefers to play outside (weather depending), so you may wish to bring a favourite lawn chair, or take advantage of whatever’s on hand here.

For those unfamiliar (you poor souls), Shannon Lyon is a Canadian musician and singer-songwriter. Born in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, Lyon began his musical career in Kitchener, Ontario in the early 90’s forming his first band Strange Days (1990-1993) recording one album entitled ‘Life Aint Easy’ produced by Nelson McCrossan. During this time Lyon also started his low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album entitled ‘Buffalo White’ in 1994 which was recorded by friend Bill Braun.

Since 1994 Lyon has released ten studio albums and has received critical acclaim and commercial success in Europe, North America and Australia.

Lyon was the first Canadian signed to Richard Branson’s post Virgin Records label V2 in 2004(becoming label mates with The White Stripes and Paul Weller) with the release of the critically acclaimed album ‘Wandered’  which was recorded in a 17th century farmhouse in the south of Holland with Dutch producer Bj Baartmans. Wandered was released in Australia on Collision records and in Europe on Inbetweens Records.

In 2003 Lyon signed with Canadian Roots label Busted Flat Records (Matt Anderson, Jay Semko, Paul MacLeod), a roots music label founded in 2002 by Mark Logan and based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Busted Flat has released 5 of Lyon’s albums to date. (Bound, Safe Inside, Someday Mourning, El Sol, and Broken Things).

Lyon moved to Holland in 2000 and spent the better part of a decade living and touring in Spain, Germany, France and The Netherlands.

Lyon is currently located in Canada.

(Lyon has toured and shared the stage in Europe, Australia, USA and Canada with such artists as Lucinda Williams, Richard Buckner, Jay Farrar, Ray LaMontagne, Blue Rodeo and Bruce Cockburn).

When I hear Shannon, I hear the rhythms of the Midnight Cowboy, the
harmonies of an earth-bound angel, the acoustic guitar that knows the pain
of a heart, the steel guitar that stirs the lonely and restless lovers. But
most of all I hear the voice that echoes Earle, Farrar and Buckner, a voice
that haunts you like a heavy fog on a barren field on a cool October
morning.
Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo, Wilco)

I just love it when something new enters my ears and blows my mind. The joy of discovering something new and amazing never gets old, nor does the joy of sharing the news with others.

One of my favourite discoveries of 2012 was a young lady named Melissa Payne. Her self-titled debut was full of interesting lyrics, great musicianship, and her warm, inviting voice. It was one of those surprising ones – someone I’d never heard of and an album featuring players I didn’t know, but someone impressive and exciting. She’s a talented singer/songwriter, and also an accomplished fiddle player. She took lessons from the Leahy family and toured with Natalie McMaster, so she’s learned from the best.

And she puts those skills to good use backing up Dylan Ireland as Express and Company. Dylan comes from a very musical family who have prepared him well for a promising career leading another of the most impressive debuts I’ve heard in a long time. The songs are just the kind of intelligent, melodic, interesting roots rock that I love.

Express and Company dropped by Steel Belted Radio recently for a conversation and live performances. I was so impressed that I just had to hear more. So we set out to plug a hole in the tour schedule with another stop in Winnipeg. I’m very excited to share this new group with you, and I know that you’ll be impressed with these songs and these musicians. You might not have heard of Express and Company or Melissa Payne yet, but I’d bet that those names will become a lot more familiar to a lot more people over the next few years.

And the next exciting show at The Sunset Saloon is shortly after, when Chris Trapper comes to our cozy confines on April 8! That one promises to be great also!

As if that weren’t enough, we’re proud to welcome back Christina Martin and Dale Murray on April 28!

I was thrilled to have one of Canada’s finest singer/songwriters and most promising artists stop by my house once, but somehow, lightning keeps striking because we’re over the moon excited to announce that Christina Martin returns to Sunset Saloon for the FOURTH TIME, April 28!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Christina Martin is the full package and someone you do not want to miss seeing: she’s got a smoky, sexy voice reminiscent of Amy Rigby, powerful, personal songs like Lucinda Williams, and catchy hooks that remind me of Shawn Colvin’s best. She’s also a wonderful storyteller, an engaging performer, and a real humanitarian. She  also completed an Artist in Residency with Geriatric Medicine Research (GMR) at Dalhousie University and The Canadian Dementia Knowledge Translation Network (CDKTN). She’s a multiple award winner at the ECMAs and Music Nova Scotia, she runs her own record company, Come Undone, and she’s made it to the Top 10 in the CBC Top 20, after having received the most online votes 4 weeks in a row!

dale-biopicIt’s likely that none of this would have happened without Christina’s producer, arranger, bad-ass guitarist, and now husband, Dale Murray. His family is East Coast music royalty (you may have heard of his Aunt Anne at some point), and he built a reputation as one of Canada’s finest guitarists and producers. He has worked with The Guthries, Matt Mays, and Cuff the Duke, among others.

Last year he really came into his own with an amazing solo album, Dream Mountain Dream, another Music Nova Scotia award winner. We got to hear a preview of a couple of tracks when he joined Christina last year, but now that we know how great he is, we might just make him pull his own weight and sing a few more songs – they’re great!

These two should be (and will soon be) playing much bigger venues, but they’re still kind and humble enough to visit us at The Sunset Saloon, and we’re eternally grateful. Please join us for this intimate, engaging, amazing evening of music and merriment.

House Concert Host’s Manifesto

I’ve been hosting shows at The Sunset Saloon for 4 years now, and as we head into year 5, they’re getting better than ever. It’s a ton of fun hosting these things, and a real dream come true to have such amazing music and such supportive and wonderful friends join us.

I put a lot of my heart and soul and money into hosting these things, because I really want to provide a place for talented musicians to stop and relax, have a good meal and play for a room full of folks who really appreciate them. No competing against the talkers in the back who seem oblivious to the music, nobody more engrossed in the hockey game on the big screen behind the bar, no obnoxious drunks, paying for parking, or dealing with problems. I want everyone, guests and musicians alike to feel right at home, happy and comfortable. I know how hard musicians work and how difficult and lonely those drives and motel rooms can be. I also know how hard our guests work for their money and how they have to get up early the next day to go and do it all again. It is my hope that everyone will leave here happy and excited to come back again.

Although I seem to get a lot of requests from folks who want to play here these days, I try to make sure that we only have performers that I know are going to be worth your time and effort and money. I want to be excited about every performer who walks in, and I want everyone who comes to be blown away by the show. I seek out opportunities that I know are going to be amazing, and only accept the requests that I am going to be excited about. I hope by now folks trust my judgement, so that even if you don’t know much about a performer appearing here, you’ll know that it’s going to be great, just because I say so. I don’t anyone to ever leave my house thinking that the show wasn’t that great.

And even if you don’t know or previously love the music, we try to have all kinds of food and drinks on hand, so that you know you’re going to enjoy yourself a lot. We make a thorough list before each show, making sure that we have just about everything that everyone could want – salty and sweet, savoury and delicious, chocolate and chewy, different kinds of beer (only the good stuff, mind you, no big breweries allowed) and various soft drinks and lots of ice. Every once in a while Jaine even treats us to some of her homemade ice cream, a real treat and a real delight. We try to make the house clean and comfortable, try to make sure that nobody has a bad view, and we even try to keep Jeremy in line (perhaps the toughest job of all.)

I don’t do any of that and certainly don’t tell you this for my own gain. I don’t want any credit or special recognition. I just want you to feel great about coming here, so that you’ll continue to support the music. The only reason I do all of this is to help bring musicians and music fans together.

I know that many of our performers could play for a lot more people at a public venue. It’s a real gift for a successful artist to do such an intimate show for us, and I really want to reward them for their efforts. Almost moreso, I want to reward those who don’t have a bigger option in town. Some of our performers are so amazing, yet unknown to the masses, so they’re really slugging it out on the road, playing to small crowds, hoping to pull people in however they can. I feel for those people, and really want to support and encourage them. It makes me so sad to hear some of my favourite artists complaining that they can’t pay their bills or don’t have enough money to get by. These people and these songs bring such joy and light into my life; I really think that all of them should be living the wealthy, carefree life that we associate with stardom, but the truth is very different.

Our most recent show was amazing – super talented performers and a really engaging performance, as well as being some of the nicest folks who have ever graced us with their presence. Everyone who did attend seemed to love it, we sold a bunch of CDs and felt a lot of love and appreciation, but at the end of the day, some very talented and hard working performers who had been on the road a long time and had some really bad nights and too many nights off along the way left with, what I felt was far too little.

Unfortunately, on nights when I have worked really hard, put a lot into a show, and invited some special musicians into my home, hoping to make life easier and more enjoyable for them, yet I have to beg and plead for even 20 people to come, I get really sad and disappointed. I know that everyone’s going to enjoy themselves, and that each show is a success because whoever comes has a great time. I know that I put too much pressure on myself and that our performers are grateful for whatever we can get. I just want to feel like all of the effort and promotion and the talent of the musicians is going to be greatly rewarded. Unfortunately, that reward is measured in how much money is deposited into the fish bowl at the beginning of the night.

And sometimes, I feel like it just ain’t enough. On those nights I try to pad the total as much as I can, but sometimes I just don’t have the extra cash to keep things going. And I feel like I’ve already done enough and spent enough that I shouldn’t have to.

I had hoped that by now, I’d build up enough of an audience that people would want to come to as many shows as possible, and that if some folks couldn’t make it to a show, others would be waiting to fill their seats. I’d love to think that everyone is going to go to work the next day and rave about the show they’ve seen, and go on Facebook and encourage others to check out the next show.

If I could be sure that we’d get 25-30 people at each and every show, I’d feel so much better about what we try to do and provide. I’d be less apprehensive about booking the shows, worry less about what night the show happens on, what other things might be going on before/after a show that might take away some of our audience.

I don’t expect anyone to come to EVERY show, and I don’t want anyone to feel badly if they can’t make a show, but I do kind of hope that everyone will help me to spread the good word and try to help fill up the living room every time, and will be looking forward to the next time that they can make it. I know that you have a lot of choices and a lot of responsibilities, but I do hope that we will become a favourite choice of yours and that our performers will be worthy of your support.

I’ve got some really exciting opportunities on the horizon, shows that I know would be amazing, but I’m scared to line them all up, because it’ll mean more shows in a shorter period of time, more expense, more work, and more risk. Some of the shows I envision would feature folks that you’ve surely never heard of, but that I hope will some day be pretty famous. I really don’t want to turn down something that I am really excited about. I know that I can handle my part, but will enough people be willing to come here a couple of times in a month?

That’s the question. That’s the dilemma. That’s the problem. I’m hoping that you’ll tell me. Should I take fewer chances, turn down more opportunities, and hope that the shows we do have are going to be more successful, or do I branch out and do more, hoping that more opportunities for you to come means that more people can make it, and more new people might find us? Your honest feedback would be much appreciated. Leave a public comment at the bottom of the page or fill out the contact form below to contact me directly.

And please, I don’t like to ask you for anything, but if you could help spread the word about shows, and come and join us when you can, I’d surely appreciate it. I hope you know that you don’t need to worry about lining up the babysitter or making sure that you have someone to join you at our house – we’re all your friends, so come alone or come with the whole family. Just come.

Thanks to all who have supported us so generously, thanks especially to the great musicians who have graced us with their talents, and thanks for your feedback:

Like many Winnipeggers, my first knowing exposure to Chris Trapper came when he opened for Folk Festival favourite Martin Sexton at the Walker Theatre in 2009. He won us over with his wit, charm, and wonderful songs. But you’re likely familiar with some of his other work, without knowing it. He co-wrote 7 songs with Great Big Sea, including their big hit “Sea of No Cares.” He’s had songs on some big movie soundtracks, including the Grammy Award nominated soundtrack to “August Rush.” He is also the leader of successful rock band The Push Stars.

I got to see and hear a lot more of him at The Edmonton Folk Festival in 2010, where he became fast friends with Colin Hay (Men at Work,) and won over a lot of new fans at that very prestigious festival.

He’s got a hectic touring schedule, a lot of great songs, and many amusing stories from along the way. I know you’ll enjoy yourself if you come see Chris in our friendly, intimate environment.

Official Bio:

CHRIS TRAPPER began his career as the front man for late–90’s alternative rock band THE PUSH STARS (Capitol Records).

With four CD releases and several high profile national tours – including a run with Matchbox Twenty – The Push Stars served to establish Chris as an authentic talent.

The New York Times calls his work “classic pop perfection.

As a modern day singer–songwriter, Chris is most known for his song THIS TIME, the Number 1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers – Warner Bros Pictures).

A prolific songwriter, Chris can boast high profile film placements including There’s Something About Mary (Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz), The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), Say It Isn’t So (Heather Graham) and Gun Shy (Sandra Bullock, Liam Neeson) as well as significant television placements including All My Children, Women’s Murder Club, Malcolm In The Middle, a coveted placement in George Clooney’s final episode of ER, the theme song for WB Networks dramedy Pepper Dennis and a cameo on–screen appearance with the show’s star, Rebecca Romjin.

Chris Trapper’s music can best be described as lyrically driven roots–pop with a knack for telling everyday stories filled with extra–ordinary characters.

A respected songwriter of the highest caliber, Chris has written 7 songs for Canadian band GREAT BIG SEA, including their #1 single “Sea Of No Cares” from the certified–platinum Sea Of No Cares CD. Great Big Sea covered Trapper’s song “Everything Shines” and their version served as the debut single off their certified–gold Road Rage CD album. Chris’ songwriting collaborations with Great Big Sea earned him two prestigious SOCAN awards. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Antigone Rising have performed other notable versions of Trapper’s songs.

In 2009, Chris had the honor of being chosen to write an original song for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and was brought to NYC to perform his work at The United Nationsas part of the day’s Commemoration Ceremony.

Chris Trapper’s ability to craft songs that are both elegant and accessible is evident on each solo CD in his deep Discography. There is a smart, honest quality to the lyrics that never panders.

Trapper’s live show is a favorite among fans of alt–acoustic music. His on–stage persona is warm and inclusive, his organic understanding of classic pop melody infectious. Audience members seem to particularly appreciate the lighthearted moments with the ukulele. They depart the venue at the end of the evening with the sense of having been truly entertained.

It’s an incredibly rare musician, particularly in the world of popular music, who is able to forge a career based on quiet dignity and steadfast integrity.

I am beyond excited to announce that one of the most exciting and interesting live bands in Canada will be making a stop at Sunset Saloon on Monday, Oct. 29!

I’d never even heard of Sunparlour Players the first time I saw them; they were opening for Elliott BROOD at The West End Cultural Centre. Opening for the BROOD is no small task, up until that point, I considered the BROOD to be the best live band in Canada. The Sunparlour setup got my attention even before they began, three positions along the front of the stage, each with a bass kick drum set up. There was a full drum kit along with a variety of other instruments. Three guys came out and sat down and proceeded to blow my mind. They’re well dressed, always in nice suits, but quickly sweating through them and getting more disheveled as the night went on.

They’re a dynamic band, and the genre/style is hard to pin down, because a Sunparlour Players show seems to contain just about everything. They can swing from quiet, haunting, acoustic ballads to all-out electrified rock ‘n roll; just listen to their first album, Hymns for the Happy, as dynamic and unpredictable as an album could be, but brilliant through and through. That’s one I wouldn’t want to live without.

I’ve seen this band a bunch of times now, they put in a set for Neilfest at Times Change(d), opened for Wil at the Park Theatre, played an amazing set at the Folk Exchange, and they opened for The Wooden Sky at the West End. Every show has been amazing and memorable.

Finally, they graduated to the big time and headlined their own show at the West End. Sadly (very sadly), I couldn’t make it. I couldn’t stand to miss out on the opportunity to see this great band, so I had to pitch a house concert. Much to my delight, they went for it.

I also couldn’t pass up the chance to get my hands on some of their legendary Sunparlour Preserves. They’ve sold me a beet jelly, a red-pepper spread, and the always reliable handsome mustard. I’m almost as big a fan of the preserves as I am of the music. Besides, what other band hauls hundreds of little jars of mustard across Canada on a concert tour? You gotta love these guys, for a bunch of reasons.

But again, it all comes down to the music, and the music is amazing. I promise you friends, whatever you like, whether you want to rock out a bit or like the quieter folkier numbers, this band has something for you. This will be an amazing show. Please join us for this one!

UMFM & Sunset Saloon are Gettin’ Serious this Fall!

UMFM’s first Pledge-O-Rama is getting close. Very close. October 19-26 we take to the airwaves and hope you’ll help us to keep going long and strong. UMFM needs a little help to beef up the bank account, it’s true, but this is also a great opportunity for us to get you involved and build some love. We’ll love you back, with some amazing prizes and incentives. The Music Angels page has been updated with prizes, incentives, and photos of the snazzy new mugs, shirts, and tote bags. We’ve got lots of them, but shirt sizes will be first-come first served during pledge drive, and you’ll have to pick them up yourself! How inconveient is that? (well, not very, actually, but…) Anyone who pre-pledges can get their hands on the t-shirt size of their choice AND have it delivered to your door! PLUS, we’ve amassed an amazing amount of awesome incentives (enough alliteration, already!) to give away on Tell the Band to Go Home and Steel Belted Radio. Pre-pledgers can PICK YOUR OWN PRIZE PACK! If you’re willing to sort through the list of prizes available now on the website, we’ll set aside the stuff you really want. I’ll be getting in touch with folks who have already sent in their pledges, and you can get in on the fun. Ready to show your support? Let’s talk. http://bit.ly/musicangels

Also, The Sunset Saloon is preparing for a super-busy stretch, with 3 amazing shows still to come before the end of the year (and lots in the works for the new year!)

Nov. 5, 2012 – Brock Zeman returns for his third appearance! It’s been a couple of years, but our first and arguably most popular performer returns, this time, with his talented trio. This is sure to be a rockin’ good time!

Nov. 21, 2012 – Murdoch & Sparrow! James Murdoch & Jay Sparrow have built great solo careers, but have now teamed up as a duo, even greater than the sum of its talented parts. They’ve got a great rockin’ concept record out and they wowed the lucky folks in attendance at the last show starring The Mike Plume Band at the Park Theatre, a while back. This promises to be a fun way to end a stellar year at Sunset Saloon!

And… there’s one more amazing event to be announced. I’m not allowed to tell you much yet, but mark Oct. 29 on your calendar. You will not want to miss this one!
