Countryfest 2011

Dauphin Countryfest is an annual gathering of drunken uneducated idiots who can’t wait to get their next Toby Keith fix. It’s really a side of humanity that you don’t need to see to understand – it’s better left at a distance. Somehow, however, they do manage to book a few really cool acts each year.

This year’s Dauphin lineup includes: The Sheepdogs, Joshua Cockerill, The Warped 45s, The Heartbroken, and legendary Texan Joe Ely. Of course, the shenanigans are probably sold out (the drunken, uneducated, obnoxious contingent in that part of the world is large), so it doesn’t much matter, but we hear that a couple of the good ones may play the StuDome on July 3. (The Sunset Saloon is looking at booking Joe Ely for a Wednesday night show just to get back at ol’ Stu. Don’t hold your breath.)

Fred Eaglesmith interview

You may recall our struggles getting Fred Eaglesmith to appear on the show (capped off by the infamous Fred Eaglesmith Will he or Won’t He Show and the subsequent Fred Eaglesmith clause that we use on the email list (you have joined the email list, right? See the Home page for the link). We’ve had a rocky relationship, and that along with his somewhat questionable musical direction and his cantankerous ways which alienate some great musicians who toil away in his band, lead us to not always see eye-to-eye with ol’ Fred.

That having been said, he is a pretty darn intelligent, interesting dude, as you can see in this great interview online: http://www.mulevariations.com/features/feature-interview-fred-eaglesmith-part-1

The Lowest of the Low – December 4, 2010

We took a trip to see the Lowest of the Low (with Jim Bryson & John K Samson!) in Toronto on December 4, 2010. It was amazing.

Check out some photos
And a couple of videos (coming soon!)

Concerts 2010

2010 was another banner year for live music. I’m no Eugene, but I feel like I got out to see a lot of great shows. (FYI, Eugene is a fan/friend who goes out to see literally hundreds of shows a year. I think he’s up around 500 this year!) Below are the 75 shows that I wrote down/remember (although there are surely others that I’ve forgotten about!) and one that I still hope to see. There are so many more that I wish I could have seen, but I did my part and managed to get some sleep and managed to do a few other things along the way. I’d say I’m doing my part.

Santa Claus Is Coming to…

You?

We’re not usually in the business of trying to sell you anything but music & concert tickets, but sometimes we get some info that’s too good to keep to ourselves.

Loyal listener & all around good pal of the show, Ron, likes to fill in for St. Nick on some occasions when he can’t make the trek himself. Ron has been officially trained and certified as one of Santa’s helpers, so he is qualified to attend your Christmas party or event. In the true spirit of Christmas, Ron donates every dollar that he earns from his visits to a very worthwhile charity – this year, it’s Siloam Mission. Ron donates his time, effort, gas money, etc. and charges you at or below the going rate. And he’s good. He’s even got the belly for the part.

Ron’s good people – we will personally vouch for that, and does a great job. If you need Santa this year, give ol’ Ron a call or let us know and we’ll put you in touch

TTBTGH proudly presents: A Night For Day, Sept. 25

Darren Day

Darren Day

Please join is for an event called “Night for Day,” featuring a stellar lineup of local folks paying tribute to our good pal Darren Day, before he leaves town in November! Darren is a fabulous musician (see his album “This Evening Tonight,” or his great live shows) who excels at a variety of styles and plays with some very talented folks. He’s also the host of Same Train, Different Time, Tuesday nights, 6-8 pm central, on CKUW 95.9 fm. If you like my shows, you should like Darren’s just fine, indeed. Darren also is (like us) a tireless promoter of great music, especially local music. He was behind The Other Brothers, Del Barber, and more, before I’d even heard of them. Darren knows his stuff. He also happens to be a pretty swell guy. So, with all of that in mind, loyal listener Dean planted the seeds of an idea to do something for Darren before he goes. Dean is on to something. We would like to invite you to join us for:

A Night for Day
http://www.myspace.com/darrendayfadinghopes
Saturday, September 25
The Yellow Dog Tavern (386 Donald St.)
featuring a variety of musical guests

We haven’t confirmed the lineup entirely, yet, but it looks like we should have Chris Neufeld and/or The Other Brothers, Keri Latimer (and/or Nathan?), Mike Petkau (and/or Les Jupes?), and hopefully a few tunes from Darren (I don’t think it’ll take much to convince him to jump onto a stage in front of a room full of people who love him, do you?) We’ll tell you more about the particulars, but really, it shouldn’t matter. Get down there and wish the best to a guy who really deserves it.

Support Shannon

We here at the show have been big fans of Shannon McNally for a number of years now. We’ve followed her through a few phases of her career and a bunch of great albums. After a few different labels over the years, she’s gone back to the indie route, and we’re all for that. Shannon’s joining the fan-funded movement for her next album, and we here at Tell the Band to Go Home are more than happy to contribute.

If you want to support this fine artist, click here to be redirected to her fundraising site or copy and paste the following address, if you, too, prefer the do-it-yourself route: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/shannonmcnally/shannon-mcnallys-new-album-western-ballad-fund

She’s got a new song up there already, and unlike those Damnwells, we know when we’re going to get this disc!

Make the world a better place – support the MS Society!

We here at Tell the Band to Go Home are do-gooders at heart, but there’s one cause that is especially near and dear to our hearts, and that’s the MS Society, which helps the thousands of Manitobans struggling with Multiple Sclerosis, and their families & friends.

Every year, your intrepid host Jeff rides in the MS Society’s Biking to the Viking fundraiser, which has our out-of-shape host huffing and puffing all the way from Stonewall to Gimli (and back again!)

THANK YOU to our faithful listeners who have helped raise THOUSANDS of dollars over the past few years. It all goes to a great cause, and it all makes a big difference.

You, too, can make a difference by making a donation to Jeff’s ride. Any amount helps, so don’t be shy if you can’t pony up the big bucks. Every bit counts, and every dollar is GREATLY appreciated. You can have a tax receipt, a ton of good Karma, and the knowledge that you’ve done your good deed.

Visit: http://msofs.mssociety.ca/2010Bike/Sponsor.aspx?&PID=1173813&L=2 to make your donation.

THANK YOU!!!

This week (August 15) on Tell the Band to Go Home!

What’s coming up on Tell the Band to Go Home? Well, we just got in from the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and as official UMFM representatives, we felt it our duty to schmooze with as many superstars as possible. We chatted with Hank Williams’ granddaughter (Hank Jr’s kid, but don’t hold that against her) Holly Williams, Murray Mclauchlan, we even had breakfast with Ian Tyson! This week on TTBTGH you’ll hear our exclusive interviews with Joey Burns from Calexico, Colin Hay (from Men at Work, a band I was totally obsessed with as a kid), and Brandi Carlile! We’ll have tales to tell and great new music to play. Don’t miss it!

TTBTGH & SBFRR have some big news for YOU!

Just in from another great show, Leeroy Stagger live at the StuDome this evening. Those in attendance know that it was a magical evening, as usual. Those folks will surely be eager to see another exciting, intimate, amazing night of music. Lucky for them, there’s another stellar show yet to come this week. For those who missed out, there’s still one more chance to redeem yourself:

Christina Martin, live at Sunset Saloon (my living room), Thursday, August 12, 2010. We’ll try to get going early for the workin’ stiffs (7 or 7:30) but those with the time off or the stamina are welcome to stay late! You’ll get an evening of entertainment you won’t forget, food, St. James Pale Ale on tap, an exclusive new flavour of Ben & Jeremy’s Ice Cream in honour of our guest, and your chance at taking home some amazing music and merchandise!

Everyone is welcome to join us, and there’s plenty of room, so bring a few friends. Even if you don’t know us, you’re welcome to join us, so just email (jeff@tellthebandtogohome.com) if you have any questions or want to join us. We’re family friendly (bring the kids, FREE), admission is by anonymous donation, and all of the money goes to the artist (except of course that which you want to donate to the MS Society!)

As for that merchandise mentioned above, last year when Christina stopped in at Sunset Saloon, it was around the same time of year. Every year for the past few, I’ve taken part in the MS Bike Tour, which has a whole bunch of really fit people, and one fat out of shape radio dude, riding their bikes from Stonewall to Gimli. For those of you who don’t know what that means – it’s FAR. Then we ride back again. Why? To raise money for a really important cause. At last year’s show, I had my very own music sale with all of the proceeds going to the MS Society. It was a huge success (and cleared out a bunch of stuff that I really don’t need any more), so this year, we’re doing it again!

What can you take home? Well, get this: TWO SIGNED Brandi Carlile CDs. These are two of the most amazing CDs of the last decade by an artist who is absolutely destined to be a major star and a true legend some day. Seriously. She’s getting huge these days, but she was kind enough to chat with us on the weekend (more about that later) and sign some CDs. We haven’t figured out whether to do a raffle or an auction or what, but some lucky person will take home a bit of history.

What else? BRAND NEW CDs from the likes of Nathan, Two Hours Traffic, Martin Sexton, Swank (coolest CD package EVER and one of the best discs of 2004, for sure), Ruth Moody, Wendy Bird (her amazing Jeffrey Hatcher tribute CD), and MORE! We’ve got slightly used copies of The Avett Brothers, Lori McKenna, Wyckham Porteous, and MORE! We’ll dig up some DVDs, books, t-shirts, and a whole bunch of other cool stuff. Last year it was name-your-own-price and first-come-first-served, but I’ll see if we come up with a better idea, otherwise, get here quick and be ready to donate some cash to a very worthwhile cause. Of course, if you want to get your donation in by credit card in advance, go ahead: http://msofs.mssociety.ca/2010Bike/Sponsor.aspx?&PID=1173813&L=2 we’ll be glad to honour your donation when you get here! Every dollar counts, so even if you donate a few bucks, it all adds up, and it’s all much appreciated, I assure you.
