This Canadian music junkie gets a little giddy this time of year, as we start to move toward Juno time. This year’s especially exciting, because my favourite local groups Nathan and The Wailin’ Jennys are facing off in the roots group category. I’m glad I don’t get to cast a vote, it would kill me to have to choose. I called up Keri McTighe of Nathan and Nicky Mehta of The Jennys to congratulate them.
Some people care about Valentine’s Day, but I think it’s the most meaningless non-holiday of the year. Somehow, the rest of the world and I met somewhere in the middle, with a set of love songs that aren’t quite so lovely, and a couple of true beauties.

I don’t usually plan out shows very formally, but I put some thought into this one for some reason. I wanted to play some interesting covers of Steve Earle songs (especially Canadian ones, to please the CRTC), but to my surprise, I couldn’t find very many. Instead, I started a set with a great Earle cover and connected each song to the one before it. Unfortunately, I ran out of time (another thing I should maybe plan out some time), so the set was cut short, but had I the time, the meandering set would have led us right back where we began, somehow.
