‘If you can imagine Patsy Cline writing songs with Feist you kind of have an idea of where Jadea Kelly resides in the musical spectrum’ – The Pop Stereo USA

Described by CBC as ‘one of the shining jewels in the crown of Canadian songwriters’ Jadea Kelly spends her time writing and living between rural Ontario, Canada and Los Angeles CA. In 2016 she was awarded ‘Contemporary Singer of the Year’ at the Canadian Folk Music Awards for her heartfelt 2016 release ‘Love & Lust’. The featured single ‘Beauty’ was placed on the Lifetime Network feature ‘No One Would Tell’ and the 2017 CBC Rio Paralympics Terry Fox Tribute. In 2022 her duet with Ryan O’Reilly (Every Little Piece of You) was featured on Station 19 (Hulu / ABC). She also lent vocals to ‘The Immaculate Room’ (Prime / Amazon) which received a Screen Composers ‘Best Score’ nomination in 2022.

In May 2019 Jadea released ‘MWI’. MWI is the official soundtrack for ‘Met While Incarcerated the Film’, which aired on the Documentary Channel. The EP received ‘Best Score & Music’ accolades from the Hollywood Independent Documentary Awards and gained over 1.5 million streams through the featured singles ‘Bad Like Me’ and ‘Make Peace With It’.

Following a pandemic pause, Jadea Kelly returned triumphantly in 2022 with her long awaited fourth studio album. Titled ‘Roses’ and released on March 4th, 2022 (Darth Jadea Music / Tonetree). The initial singles ‘Driveway’, ‘Any Old Boat’, ‘Happy’ and ‘When I Fly’ have earned impressive Spotify, Apple Music & Amazon Music editorial playlists, as well as front cover features on ‘Folk and Friends’ (Spotify) and ‘Fresh Folk Acoustic’ (Amazon Music). Accumulating over 4.2 million streams. Jadea was also featured BBC Scotland ‘Another Country’ with Ricky Ross, Global TV and CTV eTalk.

Jadea’s song ‘Happy’ was awarded ‘single of the year’ at the Oshawa Music Awards in 2022.

Jim Bryson (http://www.jimbryson.org) is a man who knows How Music Works.

He’s been actively involved in making some of the most vital and interesting Canadian music to come out over the past 30 years as a songwriter, solo artist, band member, hired gun band member, and producer.

The list of people that have sought out Jim to play or create music with is damn impressive: Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans, The Tragically Hip, Skydiggers, Lynn Miles, Suzie Ungerleider (formerly Oh Susanna), and a bunch more. These days, he’s more likely to be found behind the scenes, producing and arranging music with some of the most promising Canadian talents around, like Ken Yates, Evangeline Gentle, Kalle Mattson, and more.

Jim’s music is a cornerstone of my collection. When I need something to energize me, I go back to his scrappy first record, The Occasionals, when I want to sing along & groove, I go to the next one, The North Side Benches. When I want something quiet and moving and beautiful, I reach for his gorgeous most recent album, Country Wifi. There’s something unique and special about all of his releases, and his magical touches have contributed to a whole bunch of records by other artists that I love.

He’s also one of the most hilarious and thoughtful people I know. Being around Jim is a joy. Hearing him sing his songs is an absolute honour, especially in the cozy confines of my gorgeous new lakeside living room.

Jim doesn’t tour a whole lot. You don’t often get the chance to see him in Winnipeg. When he makes the trip, you should know what a special opportunity it is. The last time Jim played a show at my house, it was so packed, I couldn’t even get a seat. I listened from another room. This time, I’m buying my ticket early so I don’t miss out. You should too!

THANK YOU to Devin Latimer and The Trout Forest Music Festival for inviting Jim and making this possible! Join us for an incredible weekend of music in the woods, Aug. 11-13 in Ear Falls, ON, featuring other friends and favourites, Joe Nolan, Jake Vaadeland, Whitehorse, Del Barber, Skinny Dyck, Shaela Miller, JP Hoe, Mike Lynch, and MORE! https://www.troutfest.com/
The only way to guarantee your spot is to pre-pay. Drop me a line and/or etransfer: jeff@tellthebandtogohome.com

Jim Bryson is a National Folk Award nominated Canadian Singer-Songwriter and Record Maker.

He has released a number of recordings in all kinds of popular formats and in places all over the map. His most recent release is 2022’s “Country Wifi”: a hushed pile of beautiful whispers and gently considered lyrical ruminations.

Jim also has an ongoing project, a series of $30 singles called “Survival Tactics”, meant as an offset to the pennies per glass Spotify/Streaming world we now live in.

Jim’s 2000 Debut “The Occasionals” was recently (May 2022) named a Top 10 record of the 2000’s by Americana UK!

Aside from singing and strumming his own golden hits, Jim produces records out of his Fixed Hinge Studio Recordings shed. His production work has been acknowledged by The Juno Awards, The Canadian Folk Music Awards and The Americana Music Awards.

Recent releases of note are Juno Nominee Suzie Ungerleider’s “My Name Is Suzie Ungerleider”, Kathleen Edwards’ “Total Freedom”, Ken Yates’ “Cerulean”, and Good Lovelies Singer Caroline Marie Brooks’ solo debut “Everything at The Same Time”.

In Jim’s former lives, he traveled extensively as a side player for artists such as Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans and The Tragically Hip.

Jim lives with his partner and children in his old family homestead in the once quaint Stittsville, Ontario.

Alberta’s Scott Cook has spent the last fifteen years as a full-time troubadour, living out of a van or a backpack across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia, talking to strangers and distilling his experiences into straight-talking, keenly observant verse. He’s currently touring with longtime shipmates the Second Chances (Melissa Walker on upright bass and harmony vocals, and Bramwell Park on banjo, mandolin and harmonies) in support of his seventh album Tangle of Souls, which comes packaged in 240-page hardcover book of road stories and ruminations, equal parts introspection and insurrection.

Check out this incredible song, which we got to hear first at the Sunset Saloon dining room table last year.

Scott Cook is a masterful songwriter and one of the warmest and most engaging performers that we know. He’s also a heck of a down-to-Earth, decent human being. He’s able to put heart and soul into song about as well as anyone we know.

If you want an example of songwriting perfection, look no further than “Just Enough Empties,” from his latest masterpiece, Tangle of Souls. It’s as powerful a song as I’ve ever heard. Check it out: (LYRICS and purchase HERE)

This town full of strangers, I remember it back when
How they look at me, they’d never guess that I was one of them
It’s getting rougher by the river, people I never seen
Dropped off by oxycontin, and methamphetamine

But I’m trying to stay sober, trying my best to care
Sometimes at night I catch a whiff of dinner on the air
And I’ve seen the light drain out of every dream I ever had
But Rosa says she’s pregnant, and I might be the dad

Wow! And the guy’s got loads of songs that good! He comes highly recommended by our friend and another Sunset Saloon performer Corin Raymond. On his now-legendary double CD package, Corin and the Sundowners covered, “The Lord Giveth (and the Landlord Taketh Away.)”

Speaking of his first listen to Scott’s album “Long Way to Wander,” on a road trip with Jonathan Byrd, Corin says, “I popped it in and it wasn’t just good – it was great. The writing was beautiful. The songs were seamless… This guy was the real deal. He’d done the work but there was no trace of the effort. Scott’s songs were so well crafted that I’d listen to that same album years later and hear rhymes I hadn’t noticed… I don’t know anyone who writes with the heart and humility that Scott does. I look to Scott’s songs to remind me why I do what I do… They’re like hands being offered to lift us up.”

Alberta’s Scott Cook (www.scottcook.net) has been living out of a van or a backpack for a dozen years now, touring almost incessantly across Canada, the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and elsewhere, and distilling his experiences into straight-talking, keenly observant verse. His fourth independent release, One More Time Around, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, and its opening track “Pass It Along” won the Folk and Acoustic category in the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest, with UK magazine Maverick Country naming him “one of Canada’s most inspiring and imaginative storytellers”. His sixth studio album Further Down the Line won him his second CFMA nomination (English Songwriter of the Year), and comes packaged in a 132-page book containing a look back, in words and pictures, on a decade of full-time travel. He’s currently touring in support of his seventh collection, Tangle of Souls, which comes in a hardcover book of road stories and ruminations, both personal and political. Cook is one of the hardest-working DIY troubadours on the road today, averaging around 150 shows including a dozen festivals every year since 2007. All the hard miles notwithstanding, he still believes that songs can change your life, and your life can change the world.

“As good a modern folkie as we have these days. A voice perfect for the genre. An understanding beyond the norm.” –No Depression

“He sings his heart and soul, and in doing so lets light flood into your own… Truly one of Woody Guthrie’s children.” –RnR Magazine

It’s been an amazing summer, in spite of the madness. We’ve been incredibly lucky in Winnipeg to have ample access to live music courtesy of John Scoles at The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club, who set up the amazing outdoor space at Blue Note Park, next to The Fortune Block. Winnipeg is blessed with amazing local musicians, and we’ve seen plenty of them this summer, but it’s time to import some talent and start visiting with some old friends.

Speaking of Blue Note Park, Scott Cook will be opening for the JD Edwards Band there on August 26! TICKETS HERE

Scott Cook played in our living room June 30, 2019. We’ve been eager to have him back ever since. We’re so glad that the chance is coming up soon, August 27, 2021!

We are as concerned about COVID-19 and the awful Delta variant as anyone, so we’ll be extra cautious and safe. We’re expecting that everyone will be safe and respectful and fully vaccinated if able. We are aware that there are rare medical exceptions, and fully understand those and will accommodate for your safety and ours. Please discuss any exceptions or concerns that you may have!

The current record holders for most appearances at The Sunset Saloon, Brock Zeman and Christina Martin both roll in for their SIXTH visits back-to-back at The Sunset Saloon!

After appearing here for the first five years in a row, Christina took a much-needed break from the long drives across this vast country and focused on a more rocked up sound with her band for a couple of albums and some high intensity shows. Now, she’s back with a new, stripped-back duo style album filled with some really cool covers and some great new originals, and it sounds amazing! You’ll be able to hear those new songs, pick up the new album, and hear some of our old favourites this November!

Christina & Dale are in the area for a while in October doing a Home Routes tour, so if you want to see them more than once (as I hope to,) check out her other dates here: https://www.christinamartin.net/tour-dates

Coincidentally, UMFM’s annual Pledge-O-Rama is happening at the same time as Christina’s Manitoba Home Routes Tour! If the stars align, we may just see her and Dale appear live in-studio on Sunday, October 20, and maybe even in the audience on October 27!

COMING SOON: Christina has been experimenting with online ticket sales for her shows, and we’re going to have that set up and ready to go for this show as well. If it seems like something that you might find useful, we may even add events for our other shows as well, so stay tuned for event and ticket info, coming soon!

Can you believe that it’s been 4 years since Brock & Blair played The Sunset Saloon?! Seems insane to me, but we’ve loaned them out to other venues a couple of times over the years. After a well deserved break from touring, Brock & Blair are back heading down the Trans Canada Highway and hitting all of their favourite spots along the way, including The Sunset Saloon!

They’ve already played here FIVE times (Blair has played here SIX times, including a show alongside Jim Bryson!) and they continue to be among our most demanded artists. They also happen to be high among our all-time favourites. The always prolific Zeman actually hasn’t put out a new album since the long-awaited Carnival album in 2017, but he’s ready with another one and has one more on the go! We’ll get to hear plenty of new material as well as many of our old favourites when they return back home to The Sunset Saloon on October 27!

We recommend & request getting on the guest list soon!

Benj Rowland & Josh Fewings make some mighty magical music together. They call it Fuzz-Folk, which is kind of a blend of rock, folk, some blues, some Celtic, and a whole lot of magic. They first appeared at The Sunset Saloon in 2015 and have been back every year since, and we hope they keep coming for the rest of their lives!

Together they’ve released an EP (Mayhemingways, 2014), and full length albums Hunter St. Blues (2016) and Skip Land (2018.) All are filled with some of the most original and entertaining, toe-tapping, get up and shake your booty or sit back and groove tunes you’ll ever hear.

Mayhemingways will also be appearing in Winnipeg on September 26 at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club!

An hour spent with master storyteller Paul Strickland is an hour well spent and one which you shouldn’t miss.” – Cincinnati Enquirer

During the summer of 2015 we were lucky enough to host a very special show for our good friend Corin Raymond, who was in town for The Winnipeg Fringe Festival, where he performed his powerful one-man-show Bookworm, then performed a set of amazing songs. It was a different format from the all-music shows that we’d done in the past (and since) but it was a really nice change of pace and something that we’ve often thought about trying again.

That same night, we were introduced to fellow Fringe performers Paul Strickland and Erika Kate MacDonald. They stayed long after most of the audience had left and swapped hilarious songs and stories with Corin and Andrew Neville, and it was wonderfully entertaining.

Paul was in town at that time for his almost-entirely-sold-out run of a highly acclaimed show called Ain’t True and Uncle False, which the Winnipeg Free Press gave 5/5 stars. Since then he’s gone on to produce other wonderful and highly acclaimed shows like Papa Squat (review), Balls of Yarns (review), and last year’s wonderful, collaborative Tales Too Tall for Trailers (review). Each show has been hilarious, entertaining, and almost always sold out with universal rave reviews. And every time we see Paul and Erika we suggest that we should hang out and let people hear some of the magic that happened after-hours in 2015.

And here we are!

Paul and Erika are at this year’s Winnipeg Fringe Festival July 18-28 with a show called 13 Dead Dreams of Eugene: (www.winnipegfringe.com/performer-detail.aspx?kw=Theatre+Mobile)

X-Files meets the Twilight Zone
in the dark!

This award-winning shadow and flashlight reenactment of nightmares won “Best Show” at the Orlando International Fringe Festival in May 2018 and ran OFF-BROADWAY in November of 2018.

After that show wraps, they’re going to stick around for an extra day and put on a special, intimate evening of songs & stories exclusively at The Sunset Saloon!

You won’t see a show quite like this at The Fringe Festival, any other house concert or any other festival anywhere! This is a special opportunity, and once we start telling people at the festival about it, I’d bet that we’ll fill the place in no time. We’d rather fill the room with our friends and supporters, though, so get on the list as soon as you can to avoid being left out!

Please RSVP to confirm your seat ASAP! Advance tickets may be sold during the Fringe Festival, and those who have confirmed and/or pre-paid will be given priority access to ensure the best possible outcome for the performers.

Paul Strickland is a nice combination of Gamble Rogers, Kevin Kling and Willy Claflin. He’s got a whole bunch of tall tale type stories from his fictional trailer park  with a whole host of quirky, sweet, smart, and hilarious characters.” – Bil Lepp

Suggested donation $15-20 (price flexible, all proceeds to the artist)

If you wish, bring a drink for yourself, and/or a snack to share, but we’ve always got plenty of all of those on hand!

All are welcome (bring the kids, friends, family, people off the street, whatever)! Our house is family friendly (we’ve got 3 kids and plenty of room, so feel free to bring the family), easy-going, friendly, and open to all! If you don’t know us yet, come on down and make some new friends!

The Sunset Saloon is a house concert venue in Westwood (near the YMCA on Portage.) We’re open to all. Feel free to pass along the event info, bring friends, bring your kids (our kids will thank you), or just come by yourself and make some new friends! Admission is by donation, which goes directly to the artists. Most folks pay $20, but any hard-working musician wouldn’t turn down more and will take whatever is comfortable for you to give.

Please RSVP for the address and more information!

Scott Cook is exactly the kind of performer that the Sunset Saloon exists to support. He’s a brilliant songwriter, a really engaging performer, a heck of a good dude, well-loved and respected by other musicians and those in the know, but criminally underrated among the masses. Everywher he goes, every time he plays, people are recruited into the fan club, and this is your official invitation to become one of the lucky folks who know about this great talent and have seen him up close!

Like many other great songwriters, my initiation into the cult of Cook came via the passionate and powerful Corin Raymond. Corin is a friend of and huge fan of Scott’s songs. On his now legendary double CD package, Corin and the Sundowners covered, “The Lord Giveth (and the Landlord Taketh Away.)”

If you know Corin Raymond, you know that he means every word, and that he knows grat songs. He’s never, ever steered me wrong. Come and make up your own mind on June 30!

Sunset Saloon Tenth Anniversary!

On April 10, 2009 a big, beautiful dream came true when I was able to put together a room packed full of music lovers and some musicians that many of them had never seen before. Every person left a big fan and it kindled relationships with fans and performers that have lasted to this day. Since then, we’ve met so many great musicians and so many excited and passionate fans, and we’ve been blessed to have had the best seats in the house.

It’s true that things aren’t as easy as they once were, so we don’t do nearly as many shows as we once did, but so long as there are talented musicians with nowhere else to play and generous fans looking to hear amazing music in an intimate setting, we’ll keep the shows coming whenever we can.

Here’s a look back at our first 10 years. What are your favourite Sunset Saloon performances & memories? Please let us know and stay tuned for more exciting shows!
