December 16, 2012

We’re busy crunching numbers and triple checking scientific data trying to make up those Best of 2012 lists, so today’s show is a final tryout for some of the contenders for the list. We’ve also got some new and notable, some requests, and even a token holiday song.

Steel Belted Radio – Dec. 13, 2012

It’s the end of the year (soon) as we know it, and we feel fine. Time to start thinkin’ about Christmas and those pesky year-end lists – a little bit of both on tonight’s show. Plus, T-Bar is in with some of his usual off-the-wall picks.

Reid Family Christmas Compilation 2012

Our Old Pal Stu Reid at CKUW’s Twang Trust will forever be known as The King of Christmas (one title I wouldn’t even try to claim from him), because every year he scours the internet and comes up with the coolest, craziest, most out-there songs of the season and puts ’em all together into one lovingly designed package. There have been some dandy packages over the years (including those cool bonus DVD years), and this is another winner.

Check out the full tracklisting at his site: http://twangtrust.ca/xmas2012.html

But do yourself a favour and download it from HERE [download id=”266″], because Stu likes those oddball file formats. At least I don’t have to give him grief about not properly labelling the .mp3 files this year. You can teach an old dog new tricks, it seems.

Steel Belted Radio – Dec. 6, 2012 – Rheostatics Primer

Tonight, a show I’ve been thinking about doing since I started at UMFM, a beginners’ guide to Rheostatics. One of my favourite bands of all time, and a band that changed my life forever, Rheostatics albums don’t always jump out at new listeners – sometimes they’re a bit hard to get into. Tonight’s show culls some of the most amazing and accessible songs by one of Canada’s most legendary and respected bands, in honour of their near-Rheunion in Toronto this week.

Today an interview with Dave Bidini, author, sports enthusiast, and musical leader of Bidiniband and Rheostatics, perhaps the most significant musical force in my life. Nervous? Yup. Once things settle down, soe local show previews, more great new music and some more considerations for that year-end “best of” list.

Mini tributes to Toronto legends Rheostatics & Lowest of the Low (and their respective leaders), as well as stellar upcoming local shows, and some peppy pop to top it all off.

A few tunes today to kick off THE BIG GAME (once we figure out what that game is), before veering off into holiday territory. The holidays get us thinking about those year-end “best of” lists, so we’ve got some new and notable contenders for those considerations. And, of course, some exciting shows to preview, this time Willy Porter and the return of The Wooden Sky.

Steel Belted Radio – Nov. 22, 2012

A bit of a look back at the recent Blackie & the Rodeo Kings and Murdoch & Sparrow shows, before looking ahead to Great Bloomers and The Wooden Sky. We’ve also got some great new music from Mike Plume (and some classics,) and a bit of All Bruce All the Time action for Old Pal Stu.

Blackie’s back! Whenever Blackie & the Rodeo Kings roll through town, it’s cause for celebration, so much of today’s show is dedicated to that glorious occasion, including a chat with our old friend Stephen Fearing. That’s not the end of the special celebrations, as another old friend, James Murdoch, returns to town with Jay Sparrow, when Murdoch & Sparrow play Sunset Saloon this week. We chat with James and hear some of their great songs. And, as if that weren’t enough, we’ve got some exciting new releases.
