April 23, 2006 – Todd Hunter Band

For some odd reason, we took a trip to the barnyard, with songs about chickens, poneys, and even some monkeys. Don’t ask.

In between all of that silliness, we had a visit from Todd Hunter & Jeff Derksen, who are about to release a new Todd Hunter Band disc, called “Life Is Good.” Todd is good, and so is the record. He’s not very silly though, and doesn’t know any songs about chickens, ponies, or monkeys. Oh well.

It’s Easter Sunday. We try really hard not to delve into politics or religion on this show; we’re non-judgmental listening at its finest. But I have noticed that a lot of my favourite singer/songwriters have name-checked the man upstairs in songs that aren’t exactly religious. So, because I’m never one to pass up a fun and easy theme, we heard some songs for Jesus, and then some songs just for us down here.

A bit of a mixed bag as usual. Some new releases and plenty of excitement about the release of the lineup for the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

Then, a compilation of compilations, as I pulled a bunch of great compilation discs off the shelf and dug up some gems.

April 2, 2006

Today a 2-hour celebration of great Canadian music. The Junos are especially silly this year, so it’s hard to consider winning or even being nominated a huge honour, but any celebration of great Canadian music is ok by me. With that in mind, this show looked at some of the better music being nominated, as well as some of the winners from the non-televised awards (which are always more important anyway).

Also, a listen to some of the great music put out by Sarah Harmer, who is in town this week. Not only does she put out great music on her own, but Harmer has been on more great Canadian albums than anyone I can think of, so we heard some of her contributions to others’ albums.

Steel Belted Radio – March 30, 2006 – Greg Leskiw (Swing Soniq)

Featuring an interview with Winnipeg legend, and leader of Swing Soniq, Greg Leskiw. Greg played an integral role in The Guess Who after Randy Bachman left the band, and was the leader of legendary bands Mood Jga Jga, Killowatt, and Les Q. He dropped by the studio to talk about the new disc, “Love Wild,” and the upcoming CD release show. Quite a treat to have this man in.

T-Bar is in on this one, so you’ll hear some bad jokes and some oddball picks.
