This time of year, watch for Deer Tick!

This week on Steel Belted Radio, we’ve got tickets to give away for one of the most anticipated shows of the summer, as Deer Tick hits town for the first time on June 5 at the West End Cultural Centre! 101.5 UMFM is proud to support this show, and we’ve got you covered if you want to get in for free. Of course, we highly recommend that you pick some up if you don’t win, as well!

I interviewed Deer Tick for the the August 14, 2011 episode

Last year I went to the Edmonton Folk Festival. There’s always plenty to enjoy at that one, so picking a highlight can be tough at times, but there’s no doubt that one of the biggest joys of last year’s festival was seeing Deer Tick for the first time. I’d fallen for the band’s leader earlier in the year, thanks to his part in one of my favourite albums of last year by a supergroup called Middle Brother (that’s a good one, look it up.)

Deer Tick is a rough and rowdy rock n’ roll band. They’ve got the rockin’ edge thanks to their love of The Replacements and Nirvana. They’ve also got some stellar songs, influenced by John Prine & Buddy Holly. They’ve got this bad-boy party band image that would make The Stones & Aerosmith blush. They’ve also got some great musicians, including a guy from Halifax who used to play with Matt Mays (bonus points.)

This band won over everyone who witnessed one of their sets at the Edmonton festival. Later in the year, they released Divine Providence, a gloriously rough around the edges rock record, which went on to be one of my favourites of the year.

Steven Bowers @ Sunset Saloon, June 17!

You know what dads like? I do. House concerts. It’s true. I’m a dad. I know. See, read this testimonial from an ACTUAL FATHER:

I love house concerts. There’s nowhere I’d rather be. You get the best up-close entertainment, hang out with great people, and there’s tons of FREE food and beer. What’s not to love about that?” – Jeremy’s dad.

So, with that thought in mind, we’re throwing a party perfect for dads, their families, people who might some day be dads or part of dads’ families, or anybody with a dad at all. We’re family friendly (we’ve got a bunch of kids and a big basement full of toys) and all are welcome, whether you know us yet or not.

It’s a Father’s Day Spectacular, live at the Sunset Saloon, Sunday, June 17, featuring Steven Bowers, free food, beer, and at least one ACTUAL DAD!

Price: negotiable! We’d love for you to give Steven some dough ($15 is a fair amount, but $20’s better, $10 is acceptable, or just be a cheapo and come and eat and drink for FREE! Whatever!)

Time: also negotiable! We’re thinking about doing an early set then a dinner break, then a later set. You can come for the early part and walk out without any guilt, show up later for the free food and stay for the show, or enjoy the afternoon/evening with us and enjoy both – up to you! If feedback dictates that we should just do an early show or a late show, WE WILL! We’re people pleasers like that, so LET US KNOW! (fill out the comment form below or just shoot an email to tellthebandtogohome at gmail dot com.)

We’ll start early and stay late (it is our house, after all.) We’ll serve up dinner, perfect for folks looking to cheap out on Dad’s day! Alternately, you can bring your own grub to share or enjoy yourself or just come before or after whatever else you’d prefer. Wives, kids, friends, relations, strangers, hell, you can even bring your parakeet if dad wants you to!

RSVP? We love it when you do. Knowing that people are going to come lessens my anxiety, but I’m a last-minute decision maker, so we never turn away folks who decide to show up without notice. Even just saying that you might come make it helps, but if not, come on by anyway!

Ice cream? Yes, Jaine’s famous homemade ice cream is a selling feature, but it’s also a LOT of work for her. She hasn’t committed to it yet, but it’s Father’s Day, so I think I might have some extra pull this time. I’ll see what I can do… Be sure to weigh in and increase the pressure if you really want some!

Here’s some more info, in case that sales pitch hasn’t hooked you in already!

In 2009 we christened the Sunset Saloon (my living room) as a place to host amazing shows featuring great artists coming through town (and some who live here) who deserve an intelligent, respectful listening audience. We’ve hosted some greats, as anyone who’s been to a show can attest. One of my favourites of all time was one of the very first, when one of my favourite singer/songwriters in the world, Christina Martin, agreed to come and play for the first time. She was traveling at the time with a young guy from the east coast and asked if he could come and play too. I didn’t know much about him, at the time, but I would have let her bring Beelzebub himself if it meant she’d come and sing for me and my friends.

Luckily, Steven Bowers is only a charming, talented devil, and surely not an evil one. He turned out to be a wonderful discovery with a whole pile of great songs. He’s a thoughtful, literate writer with a delicate voice and a gift with a melody. He’s also got a bunch of great stories and a great personality, so he’s easy to get to know and fall in love with. His songs were great then, but everything he’s put out since then has been leaps and bounds better than the last thing he did. Honestly, I’ve never seen such growth in a songwriter in such a short amount of time. Seriously. He just gets better and better.

He’s on his way across the country to be with his lovely wife who has accepted a job in BC, which has meant too much time apart (a love story! How can you resist a love story!). He’s also got a great album that people need to hear. We’re glad to give him an opportunity to get his songs out to people who need to hear them (that’s YOU!) You can’t go wrong with a house concert, no matter who’s playing, but when it’s someone new and exciting with a promising future, it’s extra enticing.

Whether you saw him in 2009 and enjoyed him then or just want to discover something new and wonderful now, this show’s for you.

You can, if you wish, download his latest wonderful record, Beothuk Words, FREE by visiting: http://www.noisetrade.com/stevenbowers (you can also support the dude by leaving a tip or downloading it from the evil, ubiquitous iTunes store)

You can download the amazing song “Comfortably Sweet” (featuring Christina Martin) free from Bandcamp: http://stevenbowers.bandcamp.com/track/comfortably-sweet-feat-christina-martin-2

Leeroy Stagger returns with a new album and Winnipeg show!

LEEROY STAGGER RELEASES HIS 7th ALBUM “RADIANT LAND”
MAY 15th ON GOLD LAKE RECORDS

CANADIAN TOUR DATES STARTING ON MAY 4th

(Vancouver, BC) – Leeroy Stagger will be releasing his 7th studio album “Radiant Land” on May 15th through Gold Lake Records/Universal Music Canada and he’ll be hitting the road for a string of Canadian tour dates in support of the album, starting in Regina on May 4th. Stagger recently signed a 2 record deal with Danny Goldberg’s Gold Lake Records (The Cranberries, Tom Morello, The Hives) and “Radiant Land” is his first album to be released through Gold Lake.

Recorded in just 3 days during a break in the band’s 2011 U.S. tour at famed Nashville studio Club Roar, Leeroy Stagger continues to prove he is one of Canada’s most prolific and talented songwriters. On “Radiant Land”, Stagger’s subject matter remains solidly based in the human condition. While not abandoning his unique ability to give voice to the rebel kind, “Radiant Land” finds Stagger in a more reflective tone, offering light out of the darkness in the songs “Enough Love to Go Around” and “Message of Love”. The album also includes a sobering political view of his home province of Alberta’s push for nuclear energy in the title track. All of this without sacrificing his ability to pull the best out of his band; who are certainly not afraid to lean more towards rock than roots when needed.

Over the years, Leeroy Stagger has shared the stage with plenty of talented musicians, including The Pixies, Los Lobos, Tegan and Sara, Ron Sexsmith, Joel Plaskett and George Thorogood and his songs have received placement on the hit TV shows Greys Anatomy, Sons Of Anarchy, Degrassi and Heartland. He has garnered an international fan base after relentless touring both home and abroad. It is simply a matter of time before Stagger joins the likes of Ryan Adams, John Hiatt and Steve Earle as an ambassador for North American Roots Rock n Roll.

Don’t miss out on your chance to see Leeroy Stagger perform live is support of “Radiant Land”. Please visit www.leeroystagger.com for the most up-to-date listing of tour dates.

Mike Plume Band returns to Winnipeg!

THE MIKE PLUME BAND RETURNS TO WINNIPEG

(Winnipeg) – As the wind rolls across the prairies, so does Mike Plume and his band bringing songs and stories to the stage of the Park Theatre, this June.

Canadian singer/songwriter Mike Plume fronts his roots-based namesake band, which consists of bassist Derek Mazurek, and drummer Ernie Basiliadis. Plume’s bandmates are longtime friends, but his first record, 1993’s Songs From a Northern Town, was recorded with a session band in Austin, TX. Plume didn’t recruit his friends as bandmates until 1996’s Jump Back Kerouac; this album won the band an ARIA nomination for Best Pop/Light Rock Artist on Record. Later that year the Mike Plume band released Simplify, an acoustic set that was recorded in under six hours. Touring with groups like Blue Rodeo built the group’s following, and their 1998 album Song & Dance, Man won them more fans and awards. The album was released in the U.S. a year later.
After some time off for family, and a full time songwriting gig in Nashville, Plume restarted the career with 2011’s 8:30 Newfoundland. This is Mike’s first appearance in Winnipeg in 4 years, and a show that cannot be missed.

Joining Mike & the band is new Edmonton duo of Murdoch & Sparrow (James Murdoch and Jay Sparrow) and local Rambling Dan Frechette. This should be an epic night of songs of loss, trouble, heroes and redemption.

Prairie Kitchen Party
feat. Emma Cloney & Patti Lamoureux
w/ Rambling Dan Frechette
and Alex Lamoureux

Saturday April 28, 2012 – Tickets Available now

During the frigid Prairie winter, the howling winds from the North create a unique musical tone when blowing across the moon-lit snow covered fields. In the distance, you may hear the windy whistle mingling with the sweet sounds and aromas coming from a bright, lone, little house on the horizon.

As you come in out of the cold, the scene that greets is one of joviality and warmth. Tasty tunes are in the air, the wood stove is stoked, heads are thrown back in song and harmony, and the driving rhythms of the fiddle and feet ring across the hardwood. Grab a chair, a pair of spoons, sit back, relax, and let the music envelope your soul, your heart singing with joy and fellowship. You’ve just arrived at the Prairie Kitchen Party!

The Participants;

Emma Cloney

Whether it’s performing live to an audience of any size or recording songs for her new, upcoming CD, Emma Cloney says it’s all about a ‘shared mutual experience’ between her and her listener. In her late-twenties, Cloney has already endured a lifetime of experiences: growing up through foster care as a child, raising children as a young mother, balancing music with nursing studies and facing tough materialistic choices that challenge her inner-identity. However, experience is opportunity for Emma Cloney. And through it, she crafts compelling storytelling with meticulous musicianship – coalescing to create an immediate bond between her and whoever takes the time to genuinely listen.

Emma’s last album, Something to Say, encapsulated how people and places influenced her and her music. Now, it’s all about Emma and her personal experiences that are shaping her new album: “Lie to Me” is a song about gripping onto the past, while cognizant of the present reality. And while she covers the iconic “The House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals, it is a version that is truly emblematic of Emma as she had only known the song as sung by her father and that’s what you’ll hear.

Patti Lamoureux

Manitoba Fiddle Association Hall of Fame member Patti Lamoureux’s old time fiddle style is described as a little bit Métis, a little bit Québecois, and a whole lot of feel. Patti is a 3 time Grand North American Champion, and in 1994, 1995 and again in 1996, Patti won the prestigious Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Championship in Ottawa, ON. Patti was the first woman and the first Western Canadian in the history of Canada to ever win.

After being one of the most sought after old time dance players in her home province of Manitoba, Patti has taken that amazing feel and drive, mixed it up with a little humour, and put together a fun and entertaining show that will have you laughing and stomping your feet, with maybe even a tear or two as you allow yourself to remember the good old days of having a kitchen party until the wee hours.

Rambling Dan Frechette

Armed with a harmonica and any number of instruments, Rambling Dan Frechette performs with passion and conviction. His songs and performances are subdued but contain a certain power that eventually presents itself later when people who have seen him find themselves unable to forget songs he sang that are now part of the fabric of their life. Songs that grow on you and as Woody Guthrie said “songs to grow on”. Rambling Dan Frechette has been crafting hundreds of such songs for many years in the prairie city of Winnipeg and Pinawa, Manitoba respectively.

Jeremy Rusu

Whether it’s on jazz piano, drums with a big band, country lead guitar, bluegrass mandolin, or accordion, Jeremy Rusu is right at home on a stage as long as he’s making music. Jeremy joins the Prairie Kitchen Party mostly on guitar and mandolin, but before the end of the show you’ll see him on piano, accordion, and who knows, maybe even the clarinet or harmonica!

Blind since birth, Jeremy’s entire life has revolved around music. When not sharing the stage with Patti, Dan, or Emma, you can find Jeremy laying down the beats on the drums with possibly his reggae band, or with the legendary Ron Paley Big Band, or maybe even with Rambling Dan Frechette’s Dylanaires.

Alex Lamoureux

Born and raised in Manitoba, Alex followed his mom Patti around to old time dances, fiddle camps, and music performances.

By age 7, the passion for music became apparent and Alex started getting “serious” about playing the fiddle. Alex is the 2008 & 2009 BC Fiddle Champ, and the 2010 Manitoba Champ. The highlight of Alexʼs career to date has been the opportunity to perform at the first Victory Ceremony at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Alex is an incredibly charismatic and charming young performer on stage.

The idea for the Prairie Kitchen Party came one night at an actual raucous kitchen party on Emma Cloney’s ranch in Woodlands, Manitoba. “Nothing embraces the kindred spirit of musicianship quite like jamming in the kitchen,” explains Emma. “So many great songs and stories start in the kitchen. We all thought it would be an amazing night of music to share the kitchen party experience with others.”

Expect a great evening of music, laughter, and dancing!

KATHLEEN EDWARDS

HANNAH GEORGAS

SATURDAY, APRIL 14TH, 2012 – POSTPONED
GARRICK CENTRE – WINNIPEG, MB

Due to vocal strain and fatigue, Kathleen Edwards has announced the postponement of the Saturday, April 14 show in Winnipeg, along with other upcoming dates. Ticketholders for the Garrick Centre performance are asked to hold on to their tickets as they will be accepted on the re-scheduled date. If ticketholders are unable to attend the new date, refunds will be available at the point of purchase. The new date will be announced once confirmed.

Kathleen issued the following statement to her fans:

After weeks of suffering from symptoms of vocal strain and burnout, I’ve decided to postpone shows and rest my voice. A very fun but gruelling few months of concerts, press and promotion has given me little time to rest, and it has finally caught up with me. After a second round of doctors visits and steroids to help stave off the symptoms of fatigue, I realize the only option now is to go home to allow my throat to heal.

Please stay tuned as we are currently rescheduling the following shows:

Thursday April 12 – Regina, SK @ The Exchange
Friday April 13 – Saskatoon, SK @ The Broadway Theatre
Saturday April 14 – Winnipeg, MB @ The Garrick Theatre

An Evening with Garnet Rogers

Influential North American folk musician Garnet Rogers will be performing two sets of the music that has defined his career thus far at the West End Cultural Centre on Sunday May 27th.

In a darkened bedroom, lit only be the amber glow from an old floor model radio, two young brothers aged 6 and 12 lay in their beds, listening to the country music broadcasts from the Grand Ol’ Opry, and practiced their harmonies. Two years later, the youngest one was playing the definitive 8-year-old’s version of “Desolation Row” on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute, violin and guitar.

Within ten years, and barely out of high school, Garnet Rogers was on the road as a full- time working musician with his older brother Stan Rogers. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential acts in North American folk music.

Since then, Garnet Rogers has established himself as ‘One of the major talents of our time”. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “charismatic performer and singer”. With his “smooth, dark baritone” (Washington Post) his incredible range dramatic phrasing, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music is literate, passionate, highly sensitive, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail, his songs “give expression to the unspoken vocabulary of the heart” (Kitchener Waterloo Record). An optimist at heart, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small victories of the everyday. As memorable as his songs, his over-the-top humour and lightning-quick wit moves his audience from tears to laughter and back again.

Resolutely independent, Garnet Rogers has turned down offers from major labels to do his music his own way.

Among the most significant folk stars working today. – Boston Globe
