TTBTGH Presents: Summer Concerts Galore!

June is upon us already, and that means we’re into the busy spring/summer concert & festival season, and we couldn’t be happier! Here are a few reminders & pleas to check out some amazing shows that are coming up.

I’m selling tickets for all of the following, because they’re all shows that mean a lot to me. I really want to get tickets into your hands. Buy them from me (or Stu or Eugene) and you don’t pay any ticket fees of any kind, and I’ll be glad to bring tickets to you wherever you might be. If you’re heading out to a show that I might be at (Whitney Rose? C.R. Avery?) let me know and I’ll bring some along. If you want to drop by the U of M, come to The Sunset Saloon, or if it’s easier to bring tickets to you at home or at work, please do say so! It’s no trouble! We just really want big crowds at these shows, and we’ll do almost anything to ensure it.

June 24 at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club, it’s the return of the Mike Plume Band featuring Grant Siemans! Mike is amazing, this you should know by now. He’s assembled a top-notch band for this tour, including long time (amazing) drummer Ernie B, as well as his usual bassist for the past bunch of years (Ben) and this time out a talented keyboard player and a pedal steel player. Of this lineup, Mike says, “It’s easily the best lineup I’ve ever had. Nice full sound. Not a far cry from Blue Rodeo. Oh yeah, Grant Siemans is playing with us in Winnipeg and in Dauphin.” We’ve convinced John Scoles that we’re too damn old to stay out late on a weeknight, so he’s putting Mike on first at 8:30. There’s an exciting young band called Sun K on after that, and you’re welcome and encouraged to stick around for their set, but free and clear to get a good night’s sleep instead. This night will be amazing, I GUARANTEE! Tickets are $15.

June 27 at The Sunset Saloon, it’s Mike June and Jess Klein! This is a double bill as solid as they come, with Mike June, an exciting up-and-comer who you surely fell in love with last year, and past Winnipeg Folk Festival and West End Cultural Centre performer Jess Klein, who’s been making records and wowing crowds since the turn of the millennium. This one will be special! (Mike and Jess will also be playing at The StuDome on June 28, but we strongly encourage you to check out our show or both!) We encourage at least $20 donation for this one, but house concert rules apply.

July 15 at The Park Theatre Lynn Miles with Scott Nolan! Last year’s Sunset Saloon show was so legendary that we just had to bring this combo back together, but now we want to get a lot more people in on the magic, so come to Winnipeg’s best all-around music venue and enjoy this amazing night of powerful songs. $20 is a small price to pay for something this great.

July 27 at The Sunset SaloonCorin Raymond‘s Bookworm and solo acoustic musical performance! This is something so unique and wonderful. We’ve only ever had concerts at The Saloon so far, but it’s time to branch out into the world of theatre. Corin Raymond put together his first one-man show along with help from Fringe theatre legend TJ Dawe a few years ago, and it was a huge hit. Corin is bringing his new one-man show to our Fringe Festival this summer, but people have been asking when they could see Bookworm again (or for the first time.) I asked too, and when Corin said that he had no plans, I went to work making plans. This show was a huge hit at our Fringe Festival a few years ago in the much larger Planetarium Auditorium, so it’s a real treat to see it this up-close and personal. And because Corin is such an amazing singer/songwriter (and fan of great songs) he’ll bring his guitar and play a set of music after the theatrical portion. Advance tickets are available NOW for $20. All remaining tickets will be easy to sell at The Folk Festival and The Fringe Festival, so get yours as soon as you can. This WILL sell out, and without a ticket, I can’t guarantee that you’ll get in this time.

There’s other good stuff going on, and other shows to be announced. This is going to be another great summer of music!

Hope to see you out at these shows!

Corin Raymond
is a dynamic, engaging performer. He’s a hell of a songwriter and even more of a song supporter. His most recent album is a collection of songs by great Canadian songwriters. He paid for it all with Canadian Tire Money. It’s a story that took on a life of its own and was written about and reported on widely in the media last year. Now, he’s turned it into a new one-man show all about The Great Canadian Tire Money Caper, and it’s coming to the Winnipeg Fringe Festival this July. (here’s a review of the new show) He’ll be performing his new show nightly July 15-26 at The West End Cultural Centre, and once word gets out about Corin’s performance, it’ll surely be packed nightly. Corin is also doing a set of music at his home away from home, The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club on Saturday, July 25, where he’ll be backed by and opening for Kieran West & His Buffalo Band! It’ll be a rockin’ good time, and it too will be jam packed.

Previous to this new fringe show, Corin performed his first one-man-show, Bookworm at our Fringe Festival in 2012. It was such a powerful, amazing, entertaining show, and I’m one of many people who have been asking Corin when he was going to perform it in Winnipeg again. Well, this is the only performance he’s got planned!

Bookworm is amazing. Here’s the brief bio:

A story of a father reading to his son, growing up in a library, plus Spiderman, Ray Bradbury, and meeting the Minotaur for the first time just outside Wawa.

Written and performed by Corin Raymond
Dramaturged by TJ Dawe
Directed by Morgan Jones Phillips

Storytelling that has comedy, drama, plenty of beauty and life-inspiration, and a climax no one could possibly predict, all wrapped into an hour.

Audience: 12 and up

Warning: This show WILL open your heart.

Here are some press quotes, and even they don’t really do this incredible show justice:

Raymond’s way of connecting with the audience is remarkable, and he will generously share his prized personal and fictional stories with you”.CFUV Radio

Some storytellers leave you gaping, forgetful of your surroundings and only wanting more. Corin Raymond is this storyteller. He is the man who is passionate about the pronunciation of Roald Dahl’s Grand High Witch’s speech pattern. He can recount the tale of Theseus from memory, in detail and will freely admit to memorizing the opening lines of his favourite book. And while it would be possible to simply sit and listen to Raymond tell the tales of ancient Greece, Bookworm also manages to convey the cross-generational influences and complex relationship between a father and son. It’s well-paced, well-performed and will have you heading to the first bookstore as you leave the theatre while calling your dad to say hey”. Samantha Power, Vue Weekly

Corin Raymond is a storyteller who by the end of the night you’ll have known your whole life.” The Globe and Mail

“The best compliment I can think of to give Corin Raymond’s charming and utterly engaging Bookworm is that it’s like being read to for an hour by a guy who’s totally passionate about the story he’s reading—which is exactly what Bookworm is. An ode to books and the people who love them, Raymond cleverly mixes everyday autobiography with an inherited love of what lies between the covers of his favourite books; and while there is a great surprise waiting in the final minutes of the show, it isn’t the crux of the show—Raymond’s own passion is…Bookworm is the kind of show you want to share with everyone you know. Every local bookstore owner or worker, book club member or solo lover of the printed word—be it fiction, poetry, history or comic books—must see this memorable production.” John Threlfall CWmagazine.com

How YOU doin’?

Last year, New Jersey native, Austin, TX based singer/songwriter/all around great guy Mike June appeared in Winnipeg alongside the legendary Jon Dee Graham. Truth be told, we would have let Jon Dee bring just about anyone along, because were so excited to have him. I was too busy dreaming of how to become pals with Jon Dee to really do much homework finding out about this Mike June guy. That allowed me to have one of the most pleasant surprises of the year, because Mike turned out to be absolutely fantastic! With a quick wit, an undeniable charm, and a list of powerful and amazing songs, Mike won us over, and how. I couldn’t wait to see more of Mike.

(psssssttt… Did you miss last year’s show? Want to relive it? Here, check this out!

Well, earlier this year he posted that he was going to be doing shows in the “upper midwest,” and asked if anyone wanted to put a show together. I have no clue where the “upper midwest” is, but I know that we’re definitely upper, and west seemed about right, so I chimed right in and got to work trying to bring last year’s sensation back to town. I thought that, for once, I’d throw Stu Reid a bone (I’ve picked up more than a few tasty scraps from my old pal over the years) and ask him to maybe host a show too. He hesitated.

Then the bombshell dropped, and Stu’s tune changed mighty quickly. Turns out, Mike June is bringing someone along, too. Once again, he could have invited that Nickelback douche for all I care, so long as he came back to town and played some songs again. Turns out, we got a MUCH better deal!

Joining Mike on this portion of the tour, and in life, is the fabulously talented Jess Klein! Jess was a folk fest sensation when she appeared here in 2000 and 2003. I was a huge fan from the get-go, and I’ve followed her career ever since. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that this powerful singer/songwriter who blew everyone away at The Folk Festival would someday play in my living room.

Dreams do come true!

A bit about this show:

When CD submissions started rolling in to me in 2002 or so, one of the first discs that really caught my ear was Lo-Fi Northern Blues, by Jory Nash. The second song is called “The Ballad of Easy Chair;” Jory calls it “a semi-autobiographical tale of hope, perseverance and grand theft candy.” It’s a lighthearted song with a great lyric and an instantly memorable melody. It showcases Jory’s tasteful guitar playing and his unique, wonderful voice. In short, it’s everything I look for in a song, and I love it still. He’s put out three albums since then (as well as a great one before) and each one shows great skill, dedication, and growth.

The primary goal Tell the Band to Go Home is to bring you amazing music that you might not otherwise hear anywhere else, and match you (the open-minded music lover) with talented musicians looking to find an audience. Jory is just the kind of super-talented, hard-working, DIY musician that we love to promote, and I know that once you see and hear him (especially live), you’ll fall in love.

Of course, you can hear plenty of his songs on upcoming episodes of Tell the Band to Go Home, or you can visit one of his homes on the web for samples:
Jory’s website (jorynash.com/music)
CBC Radio 3 (music.cbc.ca/#!/bands/JORY-NASH)

Wherever you go, you’ll hear right away that this guy is interested in writing thoughtful, intelligent, interesting lyrics and it’s all presented with tasteful, memorable melodies. He walks a musical line between Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon with many stops in between. It’s magical music that will capture your heart and your ears.

And he’s won over plenty of critics, too. His album “New Blue Day” was voted Album of the Year in a poll conducted by Penguin Eggs Magazine, voted on by artists, industry folk, and radio dorks like me. That might not mean much to you unless I told you that previous winners include Fred Eaglesmith, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Bob Dylan, Lynn Miles, David Francey & Harry Manx.

Jory is very busy touring most of the year, visiting spots across Canada and into the U.S. He regularly sells out Toronto’s hallowed hall “Hugh’s Room,” (kind of like their version of the West End Cultural Centre), and has appeared at festivals and special events all over. BUT, he almost NEVER comes to Winnipeg! He played a house show in our city in 2003, stopped by UMFM for a quick visit, visited us in 2011, and now this! Since our last amazing show, I’ve been bugging him for a return visit, but it hasn’t happened… until now. Heck, one of the reasons I wanted to do house concerts in the first place was so I could convince him (and others like him) to come to town, knowing that there would be a room full of eager and attentive folks waiting to be entertained and enlightened.

So, don’t miss out on this opportunity to see Jory Nash, live in my living room!

For the fourth year in a row, we’re excited to welcome Shannon back to The Sunset Saloon! His shows have been such a treat to get to see and get to know, so it’s wonderful to have him back. Since we last saw Shannon last April, he has released TWO new albums. Last year he released The Lights Behind, a career-spanning collection of re-recorded songs, blended seamlessly together with some new songs. That album was a more acoustic, introspective affair. The album ended up being my most played, and favourite album of the year. Earlier this year, he put the finishing touches on a new collection, Lost Creek, named in honour of his recording studio cabin in the woods, which he recently shut down as he is about to move back to Ontario and set up shop again there.

As his updated bio says: Lost Creek (Lyon’s 12th studio album), launched in January 2015 reveals Lyon’s vintage sound revealing his Lou Barlow / Neil Young influences.
“After recording ‘The Lights Behind‘ in 2014, which was mostly a solo acoustic affair, I had the urge to strap on the old Gretsch and turn up the amps again.”

Lost Creek is a collection of 12 songs put together in Lyon’s cabin studio (a log cabin set inside the Monashee Mountains of British Columbia, Canada).

“I live in a remote area on a dirt road which is prime cougar country. When the sun goes down you wouldn’t walk down my road without a rifle, so I got a lot of work done in my studio.”

Lyon penned and recorded the collection in between working and producing other artists this past year. He also performed most of the instruments himself (including drums) but did invite his cast of musician friends Elly Kellner, Steve Wood, Kolja Lieven, Mike Roelofs and Bj Baartmans to join in.

“I started playing drums when I was 15 and bought a guitar at 17. It’s been a lot of fun sitting behind the kit again.

When Shannon visits, you’re sure to hear songs from those two recent albums, as well as classics from his vast catalogue of amazing songs. This is a show not to be missed!

When I hear Shannon, I hear the rhythms of the Midnight Cowboy, the harmonies of an earth-bound angel, the acoustic guitar that knows the pain of a heart, the steel guitar that stirs the lonely and restless lovers. But most of all I hear the voice that echoes Earle, Farrar and Buckner, a voice that haunts you like a heavy fog on a barren field on a cool October morning.
Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo, Wilco)

Shannon put together this fun video for the first single off of “Lost Creek”

His friend and talented collaborator Elly Kellner put together a Netherlands version as well!

Here’s Shannon performing the title track from his brilliant 2014 album, “The Lights Behind.”

We’re very excited to welcome John Wort Hannam back to The Sunset Saloon for the first time in Winnipeg since he last played at our house, almost 5 years ago! He’s been busy touring around, making great records, and garnering acclaim wherever he goes, so it’s a treat to have him back in our intimate surroundings. He recently finished a new album produced by Leeroy Stagger at Rebeltone Ranch, so hopefully we’ll hear some new songs, as well as some old favourites.

In 12 years of being a working musician, John Wort Hannam has released 5 albums, capturing a Juno nomination for Best Traditional/ Roots album and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the Year.

“You’re dead a long time” chants Juno nominated John Wort Hannam’s mantra, “so you better get out there and play.”

John Wort Hannam and the Blue Collars’ winsome, lonesome and then some style of acoustic roots reveals a woven textile of metaphor, phrasing, irony, and rhyme that reads with ease like well written prose.

He is one of the new torch-bearers of a vast songwriting tradition in the styles of John Prine, Louden Wainwright III, and Steve Earle but proudly Canadian.

Canada is renowned for its great songwriters and musicians; that much is undeniable. But among the crowd, there always stand a few who loom large and who impress and inspire all of the others. Lynn Miles is one such artist, and she’s in a rare class of songwriters. Throughout her career, from her acclaimed 1996 debut, Slightly Haunted, to the most recent, universally praised album, Downpour, Lynn’s albums have had a rare, consistent beauty – there aren’t any duds anywhere in the catalogue, and everything she’s done has stood above so many others. She writes some of the most powerful, personal, moving songs in the world. The only people who can say that they haven’t been moved by a Lynn Miles song are those unfortunate folks who haven’t heard them.

3womentruthAnd it’s true, her name does not loom as large in the public consciousness as some of her contemporaries, but so many great artists can be counted among her many, many devoted fans. She recently completed a co-headlining tour with two outstanding songwriters, Eliza Gilkyson and Mary Gauthier, called 3 Women and the Truth.

And Lynn Miles brings that truth with her wherever she goes. Her songs tend to lean toward the sad, lonely, desperate part of the human condition. She’s lived it all and isn’t afraid to write about it. Consider her duet with Jim Bryson on her 2010 album, Fall for Beauty (easily one of the most moving songs I’ve ever heard. If this doesn’t put a lump in your throat, you’ve never loved.) (listen here: www.sonicbids.com/band/lynnmiles2/audio/#Goodbye)

But Lynn Miles shows are far from a downer. In concert, she’s hilarious, charming, and really engaging. You’ll laugh as much as you cry, and you’ll fall in love with this wonderful woman and her legendary songs.

As if seeing Lynn wasn’t amazing enough, she often hires a hotshot guitar player to back her up (Keith Glass, Ian Lefeuvre, Jim Bryson, and more) and this time is no different. She’s tapped into the deep pool of talent in Winnipeg and come up with a pretty great choice, Scott Nolan! We’ve been wanting to have Scott visit the saloon for a long time, so we might not let him leave!

Lynn doesn’t come around here very often. She performed on a multi-artist bill in 2009, as part of a Bluebird North event in 2004, and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 2000. All of this is to say that you might not be getting another chance any time soon! We do hope that she has such a great time that we can convince her to make it a little more regular. Here’s hoping.

It needs to be said that this amazing opportunity is entirely thanks to our pal Devin Latimer at The Trout Forest Music Festival! Lynn is part of another great lineup at the festival, Aug. 8-10 in Ear Falls, ON. This truly is the best little festival in Canada, with a stunning drive to the site, a gorgeous site, and the most relaxed, laid back atmosphere anywhere, this one is an annual highlight for me. If you’ve never been, consider checking it out this year for more Lynn Miles, and many more! www.troutfest.com

Who could forget the first time that Martyn Joseph played the Winnipeg Folk Festival. It must have been 2002 or 2003. Here was this artist who’d had a successful pop career, signed to a major label, playing huge shows, opening for the likes of Chris DeBurgh and Celine Dion (seriously!), and he came to the festival only to be placed in a tiny, unsuitable tent outside of the music store, in some serious Manitoba heat. The way the sound was set up, Martyn couldn’t hear anything in the tent, so he had to step out of the tiny tent and into the blazing sun. He was 20 years into his remarkable career, and playing a show that could only be called humbling. But he did it masterfully. He quickly won over the crowd with his quick wit, undeniable Welsh charm, that strong guitar playing, a powerful, emotive voice, and those songs… what songs.

Martyn Joseph performs a live session for 101.5 UMFM.

I’ve spoken to Martyn a number of times on UMFM, and every time feels uplifting and revealing. He’s truly one of my favourite interview guests, and someone that I love to talk to and learn from. In 2012, he was kind enough to spend an afternoon singing and chatting with me in UMFM’s live studio. Being that close to such a performance was a real highlight of my time at UMFM.

Check out the podcast featuring my interview and Martyn’s performances here.

Download tracks from Martyn’s live session here.

Seeing Martyn Joseph live is an experience like no other. I use the word ‘passionate’ far too often when describing Martyn, but it just fits so well. I’ve seen him get swept up in emotion on stage, both joyful and sad. I’ve seen him speak and motivate audiences like the best preacher. I’ve seen him silence a noisy room, and of course he can get a crowd singing and clapping along with ease.

Martyn Joseph at The Winnipeg Folk Festival, 2012

Martyn Joseph at The Winnipeg Folk Festival, 2012

Martyn’s songs are nothing if not honest. He isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve, telling heartwrenching songs of love and loss, joy and hope, and rallying against evil and injustice. He’s a champion of environmental and social causes, a man who exudes goodness, and isn’t afraid to try to motivate his audience to do good in the world. Seeing Martyn live, you feel like you know him well, and you probably do. Offstage, he’s gracious and kind, just what you’d expect.

He’s played the biggest festivals (he’s been a big hit at The Winnipeg Folk Festival a number of times over the years,) and has headlined big venues all over the place (he’s a regular headlining The West End Cultural Centre,) so it’s a rare and incredible treat to see him in an intimate house concert environment.

Martyn’s most recent album is “Tires Rushing By in the Rain,” an album of Bruce Springsteen covers. Here’s one that he’s been doing for years; it blows me away every time:

Night #2 will be at The StuDome in Crescentwood. Jon Dee will be performing accompanied by another acclaimed Austin artist, Mike June who will also perform an opening set.

A special treat on Night #3 will be a bonus closing-set at River City Social Club (Point Douglas) with an all-star Winnipeg backing band featuring Corb Lund‘s secret weapon, Grant Siemans on guitar, Twisty on bass and Corndog on drums!

Admission is a suggested donation of $20 each night. Anyone who attends all three nights of the tour will receive a $10 discount on the series – $50 for all 3 nights. And trust me – all good-hearted people need to be there all 3 nights!

It’s understandable if you don’t know Jon Dee’s name, but if you ask any musician, you’ll get an enthusiastic response. Graham started out in legendary punk band The Skunks, went on to play for a long time with Alejandro Escovedo in The True Believers, was a member of The Resentments, played backing John Doe (X) and Kelly Willis and has added his talents to records by the likes of The Gourds and James McMurtry. In short, Jon Dee is a true musicians’ musician, but non players will be dazzled by his talents as well.

First and foremost, he’s a powerful guitar player who can hold his own alongside anyone, but he’s also a great singer with a unique, gruff voice, and a masterful songwriter, revered by many (see the great 2008 Jon Dee tribute CD, “Big Sweet Life,” featuring Matt the Electrician, Bob Schneider, James McMurtry, and many more.)

In a town full of legends, Austin, TX, Jon Dee Graham is one of the most respected. He holds down two weekly residencies at the legendary Continental Club. On Wednesdays, he plays a rockin’ set with his band, just before James McMurtry takes over for his weekly set. On Sunday nights, he hosts Jon Dee Graham and friends at The Continental Gallery. I had the immense pleasure of attending both last year, and they’re memories that will stay with me forever, two very different, but equally amazing shows.

Here’s a moment from the Jon Dee & Friends show I saw, featuring some unexpected Winnipeg content:

If I ever get tired of songs like “Holes” or “Laredo (Small Dark Something,)” I’ll know that I’ve given up on life and it’s time to move on. I’d travel just about anywhere to see this guy, but incredibly, I will get to see him in my living room.

Seriously, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

Sunparlour Players Rock the Sunset Saloon, May 5!

This show is now SOLD OUT! You can request a spot on the waiting list and hope some folks drop out, but at this point, I’m kind of hoping some folks drop out so we’ll have enough room!

If you snoozed and losed, then you obviously haven’t joined the handy-dandy email list (which you can do via the contact page) and you haven’t subscribed to have new posts on this site delivered directly to you (which you can do in the menu on the left hand side of the page). We’ve got more amazing shows to come, so sign up or check in often!

They say that lightning never strikes the same place twice, I say SCREW THAT! A year and a half ago I took a chance and invited my favourite live band in the world to stop by my house and play some songs. Much to my amazement and delight, they went for it! And since they were travelling across the country again this spring, and appeared to be driving back from Alberta to Ontario with no stops in between, I had to throw caution to the wind and see if they might be willing to do it again. Well, what do you know, here we go again!

It’s easy to misjudge Sunparlour Players when you first see their setup, because they’re playing seated and have a variety of acoustic instruments on stage. You might expect something folky and laid back, and they can do that really well, but what they do best is ROCK like very few bands can. Andrew and Rosie are absolute masters of dynamics, they can go from soft, tender, and haunting to an all out wall of sound within a song. They can go from interesting & introspective to full out dance party and back again, and it all makes perfect sense.

I’ve seen other live bands try to follow these guys, and they all have to raise their game to hold their own. There simply isn’t another live band as interesting and amazing as Sunparlour Players, so you simply have to see them to really understand.

They do, however, have four terrific albums which have been great all along (their debut, Hymns for the Happy remains one of my very favourite albums) but there has been a growth and evolution that has brought them to their latest masterpiece, the recently released album, The Living Proof. If you haven’t heard that one yet, be sure to get in on this show and pick up a copy before all of your friends list it on those year-end best-of lists; I can’t imagine how a situation where it wouldn’t end up on mine this year. I’ve had it on repeat since my first listen.

They’re right at home on big stages at festivals and theatres across the country. Recently they blew away a crowd at Winnipeg’s hallowed music hall, The West End Cultural Centre, and they’ve been wowing crowds at other theatres and large music clubs ever since. It’s a rare and amazing opportunity to see this powerful band in such an intimate environment, so even if you saw them recently, this is one you won’t want to miss!

Check out the first single and the leadoff track from the new album:

Here are the boys in action at WECC, April 17. They rocked so much, the video’s pretty distorted. It’ll sound much better in person!

Here’s a special treat for you. Here’s a recording of Sunparlour Players live at The Sunset Saloon, Oct. 29, 2012! Download, unzip, drop into iTunes or your favourite player, and enjoy!
