A bit about this show:

When CD submissions started rolling in to me in 2002 or so, one of the first discs that really caught my ear was Lo-Fi Northern Blues, by Jory Nash. The second song is called “The Ballad of Easy Chair;” Jory calls it “a semi-autobiographical tale of hope, perseverance and grand theft candy.” It’s a lighthearted song with a great lyric and an instantly memorable melody. It showcases Jory’s tasteful guitar playing and his unique, wonderful voice. In short, it’s everything I look for in a song, and I love it still. He’s put out three albums since then (as well as a great one before) and each one shows great skill, dedication, and growth.

The primary goal Tell the Band to Go Home is to bring you amazing music that you might not otherwise hear anywhere else, and match you (the open-minded music lover) with talented musicians looking to find an audience. Jory is just the kind of super-talented, hard-working, DIY musician that we love to promote, and I know that once you see and hear him (especially live), you’ll fall in love.

Of course, you can hear plenty of his songs on upcoming episodes of Tell the Band to Go Home, or you can visit one of his homes on the web for samples:
Jory’s website (jorynash.com/music)
CBC Radio 3 (music.cbc.ca/#!/bands/JORY-NASH)

Wherever you go, you’ll hear right away that this guy is interested in writing thoughtful, intelligent, interesting lyrics and it’s all presented with tasteful, memorable melodies. He walks a musical line between Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon with many stops in between. It’s magical music that will capture your heart and your ears.

And he’s won over plenty of critics, too. His album “New Blue Day” was voted Album of the Year in a poll conducted by Penguin Eggs Magazine, voted on by artists, industry folk, and radio dorks like me. That might not mean much to you unless I told you that previous winners include Fred Eaglesmith, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Bob Dylan, Lynn Miles, David Francey & Harry Manx.

Jory is very busy touring most of the year, visiting spots across Canada and into the U.S. He regularly sells out Toronto’s hallowed hall “Hugh’s Room,” (kind of like their version of the West End Cultural Centre), and has appeared at festivals and special events all over. BUT, he almost NEVER comes to Winnipeg! He played a house show in our city in 2003, stopped by UMFM for a quick visit, visited us in 2011, and now this! Since our last amazing show, I’ve been bugging him for a return visit, but it hasn’t happened… until now. Heck, one of the reasons I wanted to do house concerts in the first place was so I could convince him (and others like him) to come to town, knowing that there would be a room full of eager and attentive folks waiting to be entertained and enlightened.

So, don’t miss out on this opportunity to see Jory Nash, live in my living room!

For the fourth year in a row, we’re excited to welcome Shannon back to The Sunset Saloon! His shows have been such a treat to get to see and get to know, so it’s wonderful to have him back. Since we last saw Shannon last April, he has released TWO new albums. Last year he released The Lights Behind, a career-spanning collection of re-recorded songs, blended seamlessly together with some new songs. That album was a more acoustic, introspective affair. The album ended up being my most played, and favourite album of the year. Earlier this year, he put the finishing touches on a new collection, Lost Creek, named in honour of his recording studio cabin in the woods, which he recently shut down as he is about to move back to Ontario and set up shop again there.

As his updated bio says: Lost Creek (Lyon’s 12th studio album), launched in January 2015 reveals Lyon’s vintage sound revealing his Lou Barlow / Neil Young influences.
“After recording ‘The Lights Behind‘ in 2014, which was mostly a solo acoustic affair, I had the urge to strap on the old Gretsch and turn up the amps again.”

Lost Creek is a collection of 12 songs put together in Lyon’s cabin studio (a log cabin set inside the Monashee Mountains of British Columbia, Canada).

“I live in a remote area on a dirt road which is prime cougar country. When the sun goes down you wouldn’t walk down my road without a rifle, so I got a lot of work done in my studio.”

Lyon penned and recorded the collection in between working and producing other artists this past year. He also performed most of the instruments himself (including drums) but did invite his cast of musician friends Elly Kellner, Steve Wood, Kolja Lieven, Mike Roelofs and Bj Baartmans to join in.

“I started playing drums when I was 15 and bought a guitar at 17. It’s been a lot of fun sitting behind the kit again.

When Shannon visits, you’re sure to hear songs from those two recent albums, as well as classics from his vast catalogue of amazing songs. This is a show not to be missed!

When I hear Shannon, I hear the rhythms of the Midnight Cowboy, the harmonies of an earth-bound angel, the acoustic guitar that knows the pain of a heart, the steel guitar that stirs the lonely and restless lovers. But most of all I hear the voice that echoes Earle, Farrar and Buckner, a voice that haunts you like a heavy fog on a barren field on a cool October morning.
Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo, Wilco)

Shannon put together this fun video for the first single off of “Lost Creek”

His friend and talented collaborator Elly Kellner put together a Netherlands version as well!

Here’s Shannon performing the title track from his brilliant 2014 album, “The Lights Behind.”

Some highlights from our 2013 show:

Here’s a live clip, shot outdoors with lots of mosquitoes

Here’s a live performance of the title track to his release, “Broken Things.”

Here’s a rockin’ live track featuring his great Berlin band:

The first time Shannon visited us, I blew it and interrupted before Shannon could play this as an encore. Believe me, I won’t do that again!

Here’s a beauty we did get to hear:

We’re very excited to welcome John Wort Hannam back to The Sunset Saloon for the first time in Winnipeg since he last played at our house, almost 5 years ago! He’s been busy touring around, making great records, and garnering acclaim wherever he goes, so it’s a treat to have him back in our intimate surroundings. He recently finished a new album produced by Leeroy Stagger at Rebeltone Ranch, so hopefully we’ll hear some new songs, as well as some old favourites.

In 12 years of being a working musician, John Wort Hannam has released 5 albums, capturing a Juno nomination for Best Traditional/ Roots album and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the Year.

“You’re dead a long time” chants Juno nominated John Wort Hannam’s mantra, “so you better get out there and play.”

John Wort Hannam and the Blue Collars’ winsome, lonesome and then some style of acoustic roots reveals a woven textile of metaphor, phrasing, irony, and rhyme that reads with ease like well written prose.

He is one of the new torch-bearers of a vast songwriting tradition in the styles of John Prine, Louden Wainwright III, and Steve Earle but proudly Canadian.

“John Wort Hannam looks like Billy Bob Thorton, hails from rural Alberta, and does roots-country like no one’s business.” —Spill Magazine

Catherine MacLellan!

Chris Gauthier & Catherine MacLellan at Trout Forest Music Festival

Chris Gauthier & Catherine MacLellan at Trout Forest Music Festival

There’s a show coming up in Winnipeg that I really want to recommend. Wednesday at The Park Theatre, Catherine MacLellan comes to town along with her partner/ace guitarist Chris Gauthier. They are terrific. I highly recommend this show, and to prove it, I’ve got a couple of things I want to tell you about.

First, I’m putting on my dancing shoes and pretending to be Eugene for a bit, and I’ll dance my way to your doorstep to sell you a ticket. Tickets are $15, but if you buy them at the usual outlets around town, they tack on a fee for their services. I do not. $15 straight up, cash. Heck, I’ll even float you the ticket and you can pay me back later if that makes it easier for you. Plus, I’ll bring it to you! I really want you to join me at this show.

I guarantee that you’ll love the show!

Catherine is a really interesting, wonderful person, so I’ve asked to speak with her again this Sunday on Tell the Band to Go Home.

Catherine is a very honest, open person, and has shared a lot about her life over the years. Recently she shared a powerful post on the 20th anniversary of her father’s death.

Her father, Gene MacLellan, as many of you know, was a renowned songwriter, penning ubiquitous hits Put Your Hand in the Hand, and Snowbird. He struggled with depression, and ended up taking his own life 20 years ago. Catherine has also been open about her own struggles with depression, and that just makes me like her even more.

Her latest album, The Raven’s Sun, which just the other day was nominated for 2 Juno awards, is a much happier album than some of her other albums. Being the dark, miserable individual that I am, it took me a while to warm up to, but I can tell you, it’s become one of my favourites.

The album that made me a huge fan was her second, and first for True North Records, Church Bell Blues. It dealt with a painful, difficult breakup, and uncertain time in her life. She bared it all in song, so beautifully. That is still one of my very favourites.

But you decide which one is your favourite. I love all of her records. Come pick one up on Wednesday! http://www.catherinemaclellan.com/music/
Do let me know if I can bring you a ticket or hold on to one for you. And do tune in to the show this Sunday for lots of her powerful songs, and what is sure to be a really great conversation.

And hey, don’t forget to mark your calendar so you don’t miss out on the exciting Spring shows coming up at The Sunset Saloon!

Sunday, March 22 (matinee) – John Wort Hannam trio!

Friday, April 10 – Shannon Lyon!

Sunday, April 19 – Jory Nash!

Don’t forget, CKUW FunDrive is coming up soon. They’re good people doing great work. Show ’em some love!

New Damnwells!

I’m more than a little obsessed at the moment with the new track from one of my very favourite bands in the world, The Damnwells. They released a new single and the artwork today for the new self-titled record, and I can’t get enough! Plus, I found out that they’re playing May 16 in St. Paul – that’s a Saturday AND it’s May long weekend, baby!

The new record comes out April 14, 2015!

Lynn Miles presents Songs for the Darkest Night!

Lynn Miles @ The Sunset Saloon, Aug. 7, 2014!If you’re a follower of the show or know me at all, you know that I LOVE Lynn Miles. She’s a bit of a dark soul, just like me, and she captures so much of the sadness and darkness in life, and injects a note of hope, and a lot of beauty. She’s a wonderful artist, and as we found out this summer, she’s a wonderful person as well. All of that makes me want to support whatever she does, but sometimes, a project is just extra special and extra interesting.

One wouldn’t automatically connect Lynn with the sounds of the Christmas season, but she’s been working on a project that will bring to life a bunch of songs that she’s written and will perform as part this month, called “Songs for the Darkest Night.” (you may have heard a couple of advance tracks on my shows lately!) She’s got a sold out show happening in Ottawa this month, and I so wish I could be there. This summer, I urged her to record the show so that the rest of us could see it. It looks like she’s taking that idea and creating a DVD of the event. If all goes well, she even hopes to take the show on the road next year!

lynn miles dark niteBut first she needs a little help getting the DVD made. She’s started up a Kickstarter campaign to help with the production costs. I know Lynn and I trust her. I know that she’s not doing this campaign to be greedy, I know that she needs to. I also know that she will do an amazing job, and many of us will benefit by being able to see this show.

I’ve given her a donation, and I urge you to support her if you are able. A pledge of $30 gets you a copy of the DVD mailed to you when it’s complete. Unfortunately, if she doesn’t reach her goal in a short amount of time, the DVD won’t be made, so I encourage you to buy a few copies or just donate more than $30! Tune in to my shows to hear songs and more about the project.

Please check out the project here! www.kickstarter.com/projects/628643261/songs-for-the-darkest-night

Lynn & Scott Nolan, live at The Sunset Saloon:

New (and ongoing) music from Shannon Lyon!

If you know me or the show at all, you know how much I love Shannon Lyon. He’s an amazing songwriter and musician, and he happens to be one of my favourite human beings as well.

A while back he set up Lost Creek Recording Studio, inside his cozy cabin in British Columbia. Now, he can literally eat and sleep at the studio, so the music keeps coming at a furious pace. Well, he’s decided to let us be a fly on the wall and hear some of the new things he’s working on, with “Lost Creek Recordings,” a series of songs & projects coming out on his BandCamp page. It’s a great way to hear new music right when it’s finished, and directly support a talented artist hard at work.

First up is Three Years of You, a song obviously about his years living in Germany/Holland. It’s a pretty fun listen.

Check it out and check back often for more recordings to be added. I know I will! (and don’t forget that there are other magical albums and compilations on his page as well! Check in at shannonlyon.bandcamp.com
