Red Moon Road on TTBTGH

Yesterday we were treated to a visit by local trio Red Moon Road, promoting their show on Thursday and the new EP they’ll release. Our good buddy Mike Latschislaw dropped by to shoot some footage for his exciting documentary, “If I Could Only Leave Here,” and he captured this great bonus track in the station CD library after the interview on the show. We’ll get that podcast up for you soon, but in the meantime, check out Red Moon Road’s show on Thursday, their website, and Mike’s amazing documentary footage.

Corin Raymond’s headed to Winnipeg with Paper Nickels!

You may recall Corin Raymond from his visit on the show in July and you may have heard about his unique mission to pay for his new album with Canadian Tire money. Both have endeared him here at TTBTGH, and he’s just the kind of hard-working, fun-loving guy we like to support here. We’ve been spinning the new discs for a while now, and I can tell you that they are a delight.

We’re hoping to get Corin on Steel Belted Radio before his shows in Winnipeg. In the meantime, here’s his funny newsletter announcing those shows. I hope to see you there and I encourage you to pick up his new album, which is amazing to listen to, look at, and just admire.

Winnipeg friends,

Yesterday I shipped two boxes of Paper Nickels your way so that they’ll be there, safe and sound, for the two-night CD Release party at Times Change(d) on Friday and Saturday April 5th and 6th. Details at a glance:

Friday & Saturday April 5th/6th, 2013
Corin Raymond and The Sundowners
PAPER NICKELS ALBUM RELEASE!

Doors 8:30pm Show 10pm

Advance tickets available at Times (234 Main St. Tel: (204) 957-0982)

I’m required to ship these bad boys because they take up too much room for me to carry ’em with me. Each hard-cover copy of Paper Nickels contains two discs and 144 pages. It’s the first of its kind. It’s definitely the first album in Canadian history whose recording costs were paid for with Canadian Tire money (by the way, friends, we hit the rarified peak of Mt. McTire a couple weeks ago, reaching the $7,333.75 total of the bill from The Rogue Music Lab here in Toronto… more on that soon). It’s the first coffee table CD, with 50 pages devoted to the story of the Great Canadian Tire Money Caper of 2012-13, the words and chords to all twenty songs, as well as 30 pages of stories about the songs themselves. The twenty-song playlist features 17 different writers, all friends of mine, all peers, all writers whose work I discovered over a decade of adventures in the Small Time.

More than a quarter of the album is Winnipeg material. Paper Nickels features songs by Scott Nolan, Andrew Neville, Ridley Bent, and (three by) Rob Vaarmeyer. The seed of the whole crazy Tire Caper began in Winnipeg, when RV came up with the words:
don’t spend it honey
not the Canadian Tire money
we saved it so long
we saved it so long

(followed by the further genius of):

jolly Scotch bonnet
it’s got the cute little Scotsman on it
we saved it so long
we saved it so long
Rob Vaarmeyer is one of the greatest (and most Canadian) songwriters we’ve got. Stompin’ Tom may have died two weeks ago today (rest his Canadian soul), but his spirit is a lot more alive and kicking than the general population is led to believe. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say that Stompin’ Tom would’ve loved songs like “Don’t Spend It Honey,” “Ol’ Fort Mac,” and “A Big Truck Brought It.” As would any Stompin’ Tom fans! Those three tunes are Canadian songs, all written by RV (“Big Truck” was picked as Top Track in this recent review by Toronto’s NOW Magazine), which is appropriate, because there’s a lot of Winnipeg talent at the fleshy heart of this whole project.

And that’s what Paper Nickels is all about: turning people all over this country onto great songs they might never hear otherwise.

It’s also the first album I’ve made entirely with my band The Sundowners (featuring David Baxter, Treasa Levasseur, and Brian Kobayakawa). There are about 7 Juno nominations between us (and a couple wins) and not one of ’em belongs to me. I lovethis band. We’ve been playing together for nine years and although they’ve all appeared on my previous albums (Doghouse DreamsTravelling ShowRecord Lonesome Night,There Will Always Be A Small Time), this is the very first album we’ve made as a band. Just us, as we are, recorded live at The Tranzac here in Toronto last year.

And this is the first time I’ve managed to corral The Sundowners and bring us all to Winnipeg. And I want to stress that we are doing TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT SHOWSon those two nights. Two full evenings of songs and stories and we might repeat two of those songs. There’s a deal if you buy tickets for both nights and I don’t want to say you’ll regret it if you don’t (who the hell am I to tell you what you’ll regret?) but… you’ll regret it if you don’t. I only tell you this because I love you.

And now the albums are heading your way on a Greyhound. And t-shirts too. Don’t forget those. And hey, if you can’t make the shows but you want to have your best mailbox day ever, everything you need to order Paper Nickels, or a shirt, is right HERE. Two weeks and two days! I can’t wait. I hope you feel the same way and as always, I remain,

Promotionally yours,

Corin

Capping off the busy and amazing Sunset Saloon Spring Concert Series is the Winnipeg debut of an artist who’s gained a lot of acclaim both solo and with his band Romantica.

(FYI, other shows in the Series: Express & Co. March 27Chris Trapper April 8Christina Martin & Dale Murray April 28!)

Last year we were lucky enough to welcome another acclaimed Minneapolis artist, Jeremy Messersmith on his Supper Club Tour. That was a true highlight of the year, so when Ben Kyle proposed a similar tour, I just had to invite him to cross the border and visit Friendly Manitoba.

Join us for Ben Kyle’s “Living Room Theater” on May 10!

Minneapolis’ native BEN KYLE, better known before now as the songwriter-frontman behind beloved alt-country act ROMANTICA, was born and bred in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the 1980’s.

Ryan Adams, Alejandro Escovedo, Carrie Rodriguez, Sara Watkins and Dan Wilson are just some of the artists who have collaborated with Ben. His duets release with Austin, TX roots queen Carrie RodriguezWE STILL LOVE OUR COUNTRY, was a huge hit with Americana Radio in 2011.

His newest project is a warm and tender, “ethereal and compelling,” self-titled solo debut, that’s receiving unanimously rave reviews and has inspired the Huffington Post to recently dub Kyle “A Sleeping Giant.”

I just love it when something new enters my ears and blows my mind. The joy of discovering something new and amazing never gets old, nor does the joy of sharing the news with others.

One of my favourite discoveries of 2012 was a young lady named Melissa Payne. Her self-titled debut was full of interesting lyrics, great musicianship, and her warm, inviting voice. It was one of those surprising ones – someone I’d never heard of and an album featuring players I didn’t know, but someone impressive and exciting. She’s a talented singer/songwriter, and also an accomplished fiddle player. She took lessons from the Leahy family and toured with Natalie McMaster, so she’s learned from the best.

And she puts those skills to good use backing up Dylan Ireland as Express and Company. Dylan comes from a very musical family who have prepared him well for a promising career leading another of the most impressive debuts I’ve heard in a long time. The songs are just the kind of intelligent, melodic, interesting roots rock that I love.

Express and Company dropped by Steel Belted Radio recently for a conversation and live performances. I was so impressed that I just had to hear more. So we set out to plug a hole in the tour schedule with another stop in Winnipeg. I’m very excited to share this new group with you, and I know that you’ll be impressed with these songs and these musicians. You might not have heard of Express and Company or Melissa Payne yet, but I’d bet that those names will become a lot more familiar to a lot more people over the next few years.

And the next exciting show at The Sunset Saloon is shortly after, when Chris Trapper comes to our cozy confines on April 8! That one promises to be great also!

As if that weren’t enough, we’re proud to welcome back Christina Martin and Dale Murray on April 28!

March 7 on Steel Belted Radio – New Country Rehab!

ghost-coverWith a name like New Country Rehab, you know the Steel Belted Crew has to be fans, but they’re more than just a name, these guys are the real deal. Roots rockin’ country just the way we like it, with a killer live show and great songs to boot. They were a big hit at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a couple of years ago and have stopped in our town a couple of times and played to rave reviews.

This week they released a new album, “Ghost of your Charms,” which ups the ante with even better songs and even more amazing musicianship. This one’s bound to break this band wide open, so you’ll want to get on the bandwagon now.

They’re in town for their first show since the CD’s release, Thursday at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club. It’s an intimate environment with just the right clientèle and atmosphere for rough around the edges powerful music like this. You won’t want to miss that show, I promise.

And, you’ll definitely want to tune in to Steel Belted Radio for a free preview when New Country Rehab drops by UMFM for some conversation and LIVE PERFORMANCES just before the show!

Stephen Fearing has been kind enough to visit us a couple of times in the past, and it’s always a real pleasure. A thoughtful, intelligent interview and one of the great singer/songwriters in Canada, with an enviable catalogue of great songs and a reputation as one of our most engaging live performers. Stephen has a fine new album, Between Hurricanes, and he’s in Winnipeg to perform a solo show at The West End Cultural Centre on Friday.

Sadly, we must enact the Fred Eaglesmith clause on this one, which states that at any moment, a performer could decide not to hang out with the likes of me. Oh well. Better luck next time!

But we’ve still got:

One of my favourite discoveries of last year was a young singer/songwriter/fiddle player extraordinaire, Melissa Payne. She released a very promising self-titled debut full of interesting songs. But she also plays nicely with others, as she is one half of The Express and Company, along with singer/songwriter Dylan Ireland. Also tomorrow, we expect to announce where you can see The Express and Company live for yourself next month!

Christina Martin & Dale Murray @ Sunset Saloon, April 28!

This show is officially SOLD OUT! If you haven’t confirmed your seat with me, I’m sorry, but we’re packed up tight. Hopefully you can catch Christina & Dale soon, and hopefully you can join us for Ben Kyle on May 10 and Shannon Lyon on July 6! Lots of room at those still!

TTBTGH & SBFRR are proud to present…

I was thrilled to have one of Canada’s finest singer/songwriters and most promising artists stop by my house once, but somehow, lightning keeps striking because we’re over the moon excited to announce that Christina Martin returns to Sunset Saloon for the FOURTH TIME, April 28!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Christina Martin is the full package and someone you do not want to miss seeing: she’s got a smoky, sexy voice reminiscent of Amy Rigby, powerful, personal songs like Lucinda Williams, and catchy hooks that remind me of Shawn Colvin’s best. She’s also a wonderful storyteller, an engaging performer, and a real humanitarian. She  also completed an Artist in Residency with Geriatric Medicine Research (GMR) at Dalhousie University and The Canadian Dementia Knowledge Translation Network (CDKTN). She’s a multiple award winner at the ECMAs and Music Nova Scotia, she runs her own record company, Come Undone, and she’s made it to the Top 10 in the CBC Top 20, after having received the most online votes 4 weeks in a row!

dale-biopicIt’s likely that none of this would have happened without Christina’s producer, arranger, bad-ass guitarist, and now husband, Dale Murray. His family is East Coast music royalty (you may have heard of his Aunt Anne at some point), and he built a reputation as one of Canada’s finest guitarists and producers. He has worked with The Guthries, Matt Mays, and Cuff the Duke, among others.

Last year he really came into his own with an amazing solo album, Dream Mountain Dream, another Music Nova Scotia award winner. We got to hear a preview of a couple of tracks when he joined Christina last year, but now that we know how great he is, we might just make him pull his own weight and sing a few more songs – they’re great!

These two should be (and will soon be) playing much bigger venues, but they’re still kind and humble enough to visit us at The Sunset Saloon, and we’re eternally grateful. Please join us for this intimate, engaging, amazing evening of music and merriment.

Christina and Dale joined me to co-host and perform on Tell the Band to Go Home last year! Relive the magic!

“New” Skydiggers on the way!

At this show, Skydiggers are royalty, so anything new is exciting, even if it is something old… Sure, we’ve already got the 2000 set, but the other two discs in this package are pretty enticing, and the promise of “National Tour Dates,” usually means that we’ll get a visit. We’ll let you know when we hear more, but for now, here are the details of some interesting upcoming releases:

Triple disc package to consist of two live albums and a live DVD captured a dozen years apart and spanning a career of performances that has had as many musical memories as miles.

1. Spadina Hotel (1988)
2. There & Back (2000) Reissue
3. Skydiggers Live at The Glenn Gould Theatre DVD – October 13, 2012

Listen to “Wreck of the Old 97” from Spadina Hotel

Chemistry, passion, energy and evolution are a few words that come to mind when Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson talk about twenty-five years together in Skydiggers. When the band released their eighth studio album, Northern Shore, in April of last year, it stood out as the band’s most adventurous and varied collection of songs yet. When they dug into the vaults to expand Northern Shore into a deluxe edition, another three discs of outtakes, alternate versions, and unreleased songs emerged.

To celebrate their silver anniversary, a series of four separate releases will be delivered each season in 2013. It kicks off with All of our Dreaming: Skydiggers Live, 1988, 2000 & 2012 which consists of three separate discs of the band captured live, twelve years apart, beginning with 1998’s Spadina Hotel, followed by 2000’s There & Back and rounded out with a DVD of 2012’s stunning performance, Skydiggers Live at The Glenn Gould Theatre.

“It all started in the beverage room of the Spadina Hotel. That is essentially when the band came together.” says Josh. “Andy and I performed there as a duo as part of Andrew Cash’s Monday night series called Acoustic Meltdown. When Andrew released his debut album and could no longer host the night, we took it over. We put an ad in Now Magazine answered by Ron Macey, and together with Wayne Stokes and Andrew’s brother Peter Cash, who was quietly writing some amazing songs, Skydiggers were born.”

“We cut our teeth there” adds Andy. “It forced us to come up with new songs every week and it prepared us for what was to come. What you hear on Spadina Hotel is a young band finding its voice and recorded from the audience with a single microphone. We have always been conscious of documenting where we were at as a band, which is why we still have so much unheard material. So a dozen years after those Monday nights at The Spadina Hotel, and after many miles on the band odometer, we revisited the idea of a live album. We recorded a number of sets at The Sidetrack Café in Edmonton for There & Back, but it wasn’t until we recorded our annual Christmas concerts at The Horseshoe Tavern that we felt we captured the energy that had kept us going for so long.”

For a band that has spent a quarter of a century together on the road and in the studio, Skydiggers are not only riding all of those years of momentum but continuing to evolve as well. According to Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson one of the keys is chemistry.

“You can spend your life searching for chemistry” Andy muses. “For any relationship to remain vital and continue to grow you need chemistry. We were lucky to have found that early on with each other. We were also fortunate to play four very big shows before our first record even came out” remembers Andy. “We opened for 54-40, The Tragically Hip, Cowboy Junkies and Blue Rodeo early on and I think we learned a thing or two about chemistry from those experiences. After all, those four bands are also still together.”

Josh agrees and also points out that in order to stay creative and pertinent you need to constantly challenge yourself. “Change and evolution are imperative. To bring a visible energy to the stage every night, you need to remain passionate by pushing yourself as songwriters and performers. You need to be constantly evolving yet trying to remain timeless at the same time. That is what is so exciting about the DVD of the Glenn Gould show last fall. It all came together.”

Indeed. The October 13 performance at Glenn Gould Theatre is the sound of an iconic band looking back and looking forward at the same time and a pinnacle so far to an illustrious career that in many ways feels like it is just getting started. Skydiggers are continuing to map new musical territory and as they plan for their series of 2013 releases the band will be announcing some projects they have been thinking about for years.

“Now is the time” states Andy. “We have a number of projects brewing that we have talked about putting out for years and now we are going to bring some of those ideas to fruition. We want to harness this creative momentum and renewed energy that has been pushing us forward. We can’t ignore it. We need to jump on board. Now is the time.”

Watch for national tour dates to be announced soon as well as more music and information on Skydiggers’ 25th Anniversary releases and events.

Like many Winnipeggers, my first knowing exposure to Chris Trapper came when he opened for Folk Festival favourite Martin Sexton at the Walker Theatre in 2009. He won us over with his wit, charm, and wonderful songs. But you’re likely familiar with some of his other work, without knowing it. He co-wrote 7 songs with Great Big Sea, including their big hit “Sea of No Cares.” He’s had songs on some big movie soundtracks, including the Grammy Award nominated soundtrack to “August Rush.” He is also the leader of successful rock band The Push Stars.

I got to see and hear a lot more of him at The Edmonton Folk Festival in 2010, where he became fast friends with Colin Hay (Men at Work,) and won over a lot of new fans at that very prestigious festival.

He’s got a hectic touring schedule, a lot of great songs, and many amusing stories from along the way. I know you’ll enjoy yourself if you come see Chris in our friendly, intimate environment.

Official Bio:

CHRIS TRAPPER began his career as the front man for late–90’s alternative rock band THE PUSH STARS (Capitol Records).

With four CD releases and several high profile national tours – including a run with Matchbox Twenty – The Push Stars served to establish Chris as an authentic talent.

The New York Times calls his work “classic pop perfection.

As a modern day singer–songwriter, Chris is most known for his song THIS TIME, the Number 1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers – Warner Bros Pictures).

A prolific songwriter, Chris can boast high profile film placements including There’s Something About Mary (Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz), The Devil Wears Prada (Meryl Streep), Say It Isn’t So (Heather Graham) and Gun Shy (Sandra Bullock, Liam Neeson) as well as significant television placements including All My Children, Women’s Murder Club, Malcolm In The Middle, a coveted placement in George Clooney’s final episode of ER, the theme song for WB Networks dramedy Pepper Dennis and a cameo on–screen appearance with the show’s star, Rebecca Romjin.

Chris Trapper’s music can best be described as lyrically driven roots–pop with a knack for telling everyday stories filled with extra–ordinary characters.

A respected songwriter of the highest caliber, Chris has written 7 songs for Canadian band GREAT BIG SEA, including their #1 single “Sea Of No Cares” from the certified–platinum Sea Of No Cares CD. Great Big Sea covered Trapper’s song “Everything Shines” and their version served as the debut single off their certified–gold Road Rage CD album. Chris’ songwriting collaborations with Great Big Sea earned him two prestigious SOCAN awards. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and Antigone Rising have performed other notable versions of Trapper’s songs.

In 2009, Chris had the honor of being chosen to write an original song for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and was brought to NYC to perform his work at The United Nationsas part of the day’s Commemoration Ceremony.

Chris Trapper’s ability to craft songs that are both elegant and accessible is evident on each solo CD in his deep Discography. There is a smart, honest quality to the lyrics that never panders.

Trapper’s live show is a favorite among fans of alt–acoustic music. His on–stage persona is warm and inclusive, his organic understanding of classic pop melody infectious. Audience members seem to particularly appreciate the lighthearted moments with the ukulele. They depart the venue at the end of the evening with the sense of having been truly entertained.

It’s an incredibly rare musician, particularly in the world of popular music, who is able to forge a career based on quiet dignity and steadfast integrity.

Vote for Christina!

Christina Martin is always right near the top of our charts, but now, the CBC is catching on as well. She’s been doing great on the CBC Top 20 Countdown, starting off at #17 and moving up to #16 this week. She’s done a great job of getting the vote out as she’s received the most online votes both weeks. Your vote really does make a difference in this one, so if you’d be willing to cast a vote in her direction, I know she appreciates it.

Of course, there are plenty of other worthwhile artists on the list as well, so if someone else suits you a little better, feel free to vote with your heart and your ears.
