February 5, 2012

It’s a wild ride today, with really new music, really old music, a seemingly random tribute to Paul Kelly, and a deliberate tribute to Bob Marley, who would have celebrated his 67th birthday tomorrow.

Steel Belted Radio – Feb. 2, 2012

It’s Arbuckle eve, as NQ Arbuckle returns to town tomorrow. We also chat with Christina Martin who returns for another house concert on Feb. 11. And we may not be the biggest Bob Dylan fans, but the new Amnesty International compilation has plenty to love, so a few songs from his Bobness to end things off.

We like to mix things up on this show, and today we did both, with a bunch of very happy news and music, and some sad & bitter songs. Perfect. The first part of the show was a celebration of new music, new discoveries, concert news, and even a birthday tribute to a fine Canadian songwriter (now politician), Andrew Cash. Later in the show, we delved into the joys of sad, bitter, and miserable breakup songs! Why not?

We took a trip back in time today with a whole bunch of classic songwriters’ songwriters. We played a game of Singer/Songwriter, where we heard some writers who are famous for their covers of their material, more than their own, as well as some famous folks who we love, covering classics by others. In the end, this show was heavy on the classic country, just the way listener Barb likes it. We’ve also got memories of concerts past, and exciting shows to look forward to.

January 8, 2012

We’ve been pretty preoccupied lately with looking back at 2011, now it’s time to look forward to 2012. We talked about some of the exciting albums and shows we’re looking forward to, including one of the biggest and best shows, which goes down Saturday at the West End, when Ridley Bent is joined by Nathan and various special guests. Ridley and his guitarist, Chris Dunn, were our special guests this week, as they dropped by to chat and play some new songs.

It’s our first show of the new year, and our (almost) annual super-sized marathon edition, as we get double-sized and air for a full 4 hours. Once again, we start off with our (almost) annual tributes to Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt, both of whom died on this day. We also send out birthday wishes to Burton Cummings and Paul Westerberg, who share a birthday on December 31. Then, it’s time to get into the thick of things, playing more of our favourite musical highlights from 2011.
