We’re deep in the thick of festival season (our favourite season), and next weekend marks an unpleasant apex, when 3 of our favourites, Edmonton, Regina, and Trout Forest take place on the same weekend. It’s tough to choose from among your favourites, so today on the show we’ll lay out the highlights of the two closest (and the ones not sold out) in hopes of reaching a decision. Today is also the day for the Gimli Alternative Folk Festival, and that’s always worth a drive, so a few highlights from that one as well.

Today we’re joined by singer/songwriter/fringe festival performer Corin Raymond, who’s touring his new one-man show, Bookworm, and preparing for his upcoming album “Paper Nickels” which is made up of songs by great under-appreciated Canadian writers, and is being funded with Canadian Tire money! Along to help out with the hosting duties is a big fan of Corin’s and all kinds of great music, and a very knowledgeable and great guy, Oly Backstrom.

Steel Belted Radio – July 26, 2012

A folk music miracle has occurred, as someone, somewhere found some new, unreleased live recordings of the late great Willie P Bennett, and managed to sneak some copies out into the world. We love folks like that, and it’s our great pleasure and duty to spin it for you, as well as some other Willie songs by other great people. We’ve also got a bit of a tribute to Steve Goodman, we’ve got tickets to giveaway and much more!

We’ve got some great shows coming up around town this week, so some previews are in order. Today would have been the late great Paul Quarrington’s birthday, so a tribute is also in order.

As we wrap up Folk Fest 2012, we’re pleased to present a live session with one of this year’s highlights, Martyn Joseph. He dropped by the studio just before the festival to chat and sing some live songs. Also, we look ahead to a couple of very special house concerts that we’re presenting, featuring Shannon Lyon and Joy Kills Sorrow, and we spin some great new music.
