A bit about this show:

When CD submissions started rolling in to me in 2002 or so, one of the first discs that really caught my ear was Lo-Fi Northern Blues, by Jory Nash. The second song is called “The Ballad of Easy Chair;” Jory calls it “a semi-autobiographical tale of hope, perseverance and grand theft candy.” It’s a lighthearted song with a great lyric and an instantly memorable melody. It showcases Jory’s tasteful guitar playing and his unique, wonderful voice. In short, it’s everything I look for in a song, and I love it still. He’s put out three albums since then (as well as a great one before) and each one shows great skill, dedication, and growth.

The primary goal Tell the Band to Go Home is to bring you amazing music that you might not otherwise hear anywhere else, and match you (the open-minded music lover) with talented musicians looking to find an audience. Jory is just the kind of super-talented, hard-working, DIY musician that we love to promote, and I know that once you see and hear him (especially live), you’ll fall in love.

Wherever you go, you’ll hear right away that this guy is interested in writing thoughtful, intelligent, interesting lyrics and it’s all presented with tasteful, memorable melodies. He walks a musical line between Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Simon with many stops in between. It’s magical music that will capture your heart and your ears.

And he’s won over plenty of critics, too. His album “New Blue Day” was voted Album of the Year in a poll conducted by Penguin Eggs Magazine, voted on by artists, industry folk, and radio dorks like me. That might not mean much to you unless I told you that previous winners include Fred Eaglesmith, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Bob Dylan, Lynn Miles, David Francey & Harry Manx.

Jory is very busy touring most of the year, visiting spots across Canada and into the U.S. He regularly sells out Toronto’s hallowed hall “Hugh’s Room,” (kind of like their version of the West End Cultural Centre), and has appeared at festivals and special events all over. BUT, he almost NEVER comes to Winnipeg! He played a house show in our city in 2003, stopped by UMFM for a quick visit, visited us in 2011, and now this! Since our last amazing show, I’ve been bugging him for a return visit, but it hasn’t happened… until now. Heck, one of the reasons I wanted to do house concerts in the first place was so I could convince him (and others like him) to come to town, knowing that there would be a room full of eager and attentive folks waiting to be entertained and enlightened.

For the fourth year in a row, we’re excited to welcome Shannon back to The Sunset Saloon! His shows have been such a treat to get to see and get to know, so it’s wonderful to have him back. Since we last saw Shannon last April, he has released TWO new albums. Last year he released The Lights Behind, a career-spanning collection of re-recorded songs, blended seamlessly together with some new songs. That album was a more acoustic, introspective affair. The album ended up being my most played, and favourite album of the year. Earlier this year, he put the finishing touches on a new collection, Lost Creek, named in honour of his recording studio cabin in the woods, which he recently shut down as he is about to move back to Ontario and set up shop again there.

As his updated bio says: Lost Creek (Lyon’s 12th studio album), launched in January 2015 reveals Lyon’s vintage sound revealing his Lou Barlow / Neil Young influences.
“After recording ‘The Lights Behind‘ in 2014, which was mostly a solo acoustic affair, I had the urge to strap on the old Gretsch and turn up the amps again.”

Lost Creek is a collection of 12 songs put together in Lyon’s cabin studio (a log cabin set inside the Monashee Mountains of British Columbia, Canada).

“I live in a remote area on a dirt road which is prime cougar country. When the sun goes down you wouldn’t walk down my road without a rifle, so I got a lot of work done in my studio.”

Lyon penned and recorded the collection in between working and producing other artists this past year. He also performed most of the instruments himself (including drums) but did invite his cast of musician friends Elly Kellner, Steve Wood, Kolja Lieven, Mike Roelofs and Bj Baartmans to join in.

“I started playing drums when I was 15 and bought a guitar at 17. It’s been a lot of fun sitting behind the kit again.”

When Shannon visits, you’re sure to hear songs from those two recent albums, as well as classics from his vast catalogue of amazing songs. This is a show not to be missed!

Canada is renowned for its great songwriters and musicians; that much is undeniable. But among the crowd, there always stand a few who loom large and who impress and inspire all of the others. Lynn Miles is one such artist, and she’s in a rare class of songwriters. Throughout her career, from her acclaimed 1996 debut, Slightly Haunted, to the most recent, universally praised album, Downpour, Lynn’s albums have had a rare, consistent beauty – there aren’t any duds anywhere in the catalogue, and everything she’s done has stood above so many others. She writes some of the most powerful, personal, moving songs in the world. The only people who can say that they haven’t been moved by a Lynn Miles song are those unfortunate folks who haven’t heard them.

And it’s true, her name does not loom as large in the public consciousness as some of her contemporaries, but so many great artists can be counted among her many, many devoted fans. She recently completed a co-headlining tour with two outstanding songwriters, Eliza Gilkyson and Mary Gauthier, called 3 Women and the Truth.

And Lynn Miles brings that truth with her wherever she goes. Her songs tend to lean toward the sad, lonely, desperate part of the human condition. She’s lived it all and isn’t afraid to write about it. Consider her duet with Jim Bryson on her 2010 album, Fall for Beauty (easily one of the most moving songs I’ve ever heard. But Lynn Miles shows are far from a downer. In concert, she’s hilarious, charming, and really engaging. You’ll laugh as much as you cry, and you’ll fall in love with this wonderful woman and her legendary songs.

As if seeing Lynn wasn’t amazing enough, she often hires a hotshot guitar player to back her up (Keith Glass, Ian Lefeuvre, Jim Bryson, and more) and this time is no different. She’s tapped into the deep pool of talent in Winnipeg and come up with a pretty great choice, Scott Nolan! We’ve been wanting to have Scott visit the saloon for a long time, so we might not let him leave!

Lynn doesn’t come around here very often. She performed on a multi-artist bill in 2009, as part of a Bluebird North event in 2004, and at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 2000. All of this is to say that you might not be getting another chance any time soon! We do hope that she has such a great time that we can convince her to make it a little more regular. Here’s hoping.

It needs to be said that this amazing opportunity is entirely thanks to our pal Devin Latimer at The Trout Forest Music Festival! Lynn is part of another great lineup at the festival, Aug. 8-10 in Ear Falls, ON. This truly is the best little festival in Canada, with a stunning drive to the site, a gorgeous site, and the most relaxed, laid back atmosphere anywhere, this one is an annual highlight for me. The hits just keep on coming! Martyn was booked to come to town for two shows at The StuDome, but those sold out so quickly, he wanted to add another day, and once again, Management at The StuDome is throwing us a bone, and it’s a good one!

Who could forget the first time that Martyn Joseph played the Winnipeg Folk Festival. It must have been 2002 or 2003. Here was this artist who’d had a successful pop career, signed to a major label, playing huge shows, opening for the likes of Chris DeBurgh and Celine Dion (seriously!), and he came to the festival only to be placed in a tiny, unsuitable tent outside of the music store, in some serious Manitoba heat. The way the sound was set up, Martyn couldn’t hear anything in the tent, so he had to step out of the tiny tent and into the blazing sun. He was 20 years into his remarkable career, and playing a show that could only be called humbling. But he did it masterfully. He quickly won over the crowd with his quick wit, undeniable Welsh charm, that strong guitar playing, a powerful, emotive voice, and those songs… what songs.

I’ve spoken to Martyn a number of times on UMFM, and every time feels uplifting and revealing. He’s truly one of my favourite interview guests, and someone that I love to talk to and learn from. In 2012, he was kind enough to spend an afternoon singing and chatting with me in UMFM’s live studio. Being that close to such a performance was a real highlight of my time at UMFM.

Seeing Martyn Joseph live is an experience like no other. I use the word ‘passionate’ far too often when describing Martyn, but it just fits so well. I’ve seen him get swept up in emotion on stage, both joyful and sad. I’ve seen him speak and motivate audiences like the best preacher. I’ve seen him silence a noisy room, and of course he can get a crowd singing and clapping along with ease.

Martyn’s songs are nothing if not honest. He isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve,telling heartwrenching songs of love and loss, joy and hope, and rallying against evil and injustice. He’s a champion of environmental and social causes, a man who exudes goodness, and isn’t afraid to try to motivate his audience to do good in the world. Seeing Martyn live, you feel like you know him well, and you probably do. Offstage, he’s gracious and kind, just what you’d expect.

He’s played the biggest festivals (he’s been a big hit at The Winnipeg Folk Festival a number of times over the years,) and has headlined big venues all over the place (he’s a regular headlining The West End Cultural Centre,) so it’s a rare and incredible treat to see him in an intimate house concert environment.

Martyn’s most recent album is “Tires Rushing By in the Rain,” an album of Bruce Springsteen covers. Here’s one that he’s been doing for years; it blows me away every time:

The house concert hosting racket has been amazingly good to me over the past 5 years, so there’s no reason to expect that it could get even better, but it continues to! Our Old Pal Stu at CKUW‘s Twang Trust is bringing in some serious superstar performers this summer, and he’s sharing the wealth, so we get a piece of the action!

What’s more, this is just Night #1 of JDG’s 3 Night / 3 Venue House Concert Tour of Winnipeg!

Night #2 will be at The StuDome in Crescentwood. Jon Dee will be performing accompanied by another acclaimed Austin artist, Mike June who will also perform an opening set.

A special treat on Night #3 will be a bonus closing-set at River City Social Club (Point Douglas) with an all-star Winnipeg backing band featuring Corb Lund‘s secret weapon, Grant Siemans on guitar, Twisty on bass and Corndog on drums!

Admission is a suggested donation of $20 each night. Anyone who attends all three nights of the tour will receive a $10 discount on the series – $50 for all 3 nights. And trust me – all good-hearted people need to be there all 3 nights!

It’s understandable if you don’t know Jon Dee’s name, but if you ask any musician, you’ll get an enthusiastic response. Graham started out in legendary punk band The Skunks, went on to play for a long time with Alejandro Escovedo in The True Believers, was a member of The Resentments, played backing John Doe (X) and Kelly Willis and has added his talents to records by the likes of The Gourds and James McMurtry. In short, Jon Dee is a true musicians’ musician, but non players will be dazzled by his talents as well.

First and foremost, he’s a powerful guitar player who can hold his own alongside anyone, but he’s also a great singer with a unique, gruff voice, and a masterful songwriter, revered by many (see the great 2008 Jon Dee tribute CD, “Big Sweet Life,” featuring Matt the Electrician, Bob Schneider, James McMurtry, and many more.)

In a town full of legends, Austin, TX, Jon Dee Graham is one of the most respected. He holds down two weekly residencies at the legendary Continental Club. On Wednesdays, he plays a rockin’ set with his band, just before James McMurtry takes over for his weekly set. On Sunday nights, he hosts Jon Dee Graham and friends at The Continental Gallery. I had the immense pleasure of attending both last year, and they’re memories that will stay with me forever, two very different, but equally amazing shows.

If I ever get tired of songs like “Holes” or “Laredo (Small Dark Something,)” I’ll know that I’ve given up on life and it’s time to move on. I’d travel just about anywhere to see this guy, but incredibly, I will get to see him in my living room.

Twice before, I’ve been lucky enough to welcome one of my all-time favourite singer/songwriters to my house, as Shannon Lyon made stops in some joker’s back yard in 2012 and 2013! Hearing some of my all time favourite songs in my own backyard was a dream come true, and everyone who attended raved about the show afterward.

Well, we’re excited to welcome Shannon back again this year, and this time, it’ll probably be indoors, and shouldn’t compete with any vacation plans!

For those unfamiliar (you poor souls), Shannon Lyon is a Canadian producer, musician and singer-songwriter. Born in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada, Lyon began his musical career in Kitchener, Ontario in the early 90’s forming his first band Strange Days (1990-1993) recording one album entitled ‘Life Aint Easy’ produced by Nelson McCrossan. During this time Lyon also started his low-key solo career and released his first solo studio album entitled ‘Buffalo White’ in 1994 which was recorded by friend Bill Braun.

Since 1994 Lyon has released ten studio albums and has received critical acclaim and commercial success in Europe, North America and Australia.

Lyon was the first Canadian signed to Richard Branson’s post Virgin Records label V2 in 2004(becoming label mates with The White Stripes and Paul Weller) with the release of the critically acclaimed album ‘Wandered’ which was recorded in a 17th century farmhouse in the south of Holland with Dutch producer Bj Baartmans. Wandered was released in Australia on Collision records and in Europe on Inbetweens Records.

In 2003 Lyon signed with Canadian Roots label Busted Flat Records (Matt Anderson, Jay Semko, Paul MacLeod), a roots music label founded in 2002 by Mark Logan and based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Busted Flat has released 5 of Lyon’s albums to date. (Bound, Safe Inside, Someday Mourning, El Sol, and Broken Things).

Lyon moved to Holland in 2000 and spent the better part of a decade living and touring in Spain, Germany, France and The Netherlands. Lyon is currently located in Canada.

Lyon has toured and shared the stage in Europe, Australia, USA and Canada with such artists as Lucinda Williams, Richard Buckner, Jay Farrar, Ray LaMontagne, Blue Rodeo and Bruce Cockburn.

After a very popular, memorable, and successful show last year, we’re super pleased to welcome back Chris Trapper. His show was funny, engaging, moving, and always entertaining. Many of the songs performed last year made it onto Chris’ new CD, Technicolor, so I hope you’ll come out and pick up a copy and hear what new material he’s already performing.

I became rather obsessed with this great song after last year’s show. It’s a beauty, and it now has a touching video:

Like many Winnipeggers, my first knowing exposure to Chris Trapper came when he opened for Folk Festival favourite Martin Sexton at the Walker Theatre in 2009. He won us over with his wit, charm, and wonderful songs. But you’re likely familiar with some of his other work, without even knowing it. He co-wrote 7 songs with Great Big Sea, including their big hit “Sea of No Cares.” He’s had songs on some big movie soundtracks, including the Grammy Award nominated soundtrack to “August Rush,” as well as multiple TV show placements. He is also the leader of successful rock band The Push Stars.

I got to see and hear a lot more of him at The Edmonton Folk Festival in 2010, where he became fast friends with Colin Hay (Men at Work,) and won over a lot of new fans at that very prestigious festival.

He’s got a hectic touring schedule, a lot of great songs, and many amusing stories from along the way. I know you’ll enjoy yourself if you come see Chris in our friendly, intimate environment.

CHRIS TRAPPER began his career as the front man for late-90’s alternative rock band THE PUSH STARS (Capitol Records). With four CD releases and several high profile national tours — including a run with Matchbox Twenty — The Push Stars served to establish Chris as an authentic talent.

As a modern day singer /songwriter, Chris is most known for his song This Time, the #1 selling song on the Grammy nominated soundtrack for AUGUST RUSH (Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers /Warner Bros Pictures).

The new CD (released October 18, 2013), Technicolor, is a collection of 17 songs written and performed by Chris Trapper. This new work was Produced, Recorded, Mixed and Mastered by Brad Young at BKY Music, Boston, USA. Focus tracks include the title track ‘Technicolor‘ and ‘Northwest Sun‘ and ‘The Accident‘.

This year, we’re giving you something very special to remember, as we’re bringing back Brock Zeman and his amazing friends & accompanists, Blair Hogan & Dylan Roberts!

Brock was our first guest at The Sunset Saloon, and he set the bar high. Since then, he’s been back almost every year, making this show number 4! My neighbour Shelly is the band’s official Winnipeg “road mom,” and she always goes all out, inviting folks and looking after the boys in the band. She’s dubbed this “Bedson St. Brockfest,” and that sounds about right to me!

If you’re not familiar with Brock, well, you need to be here. He’s got all of the skill and lyrical ability as the great Texas songwriters, but with a real rockin’ edge. He’s also bringing along a brand new CD, “Rotten Tooth,” which he calls his “most experimental production so far.” Since setting up shop at his home studio, The Big Muddy, his albums have become more powerful and intriguing. His last disc, “Me Then You,” is a modern day classic, and I can’t wait to hear what he’s done to try and top that! Come on down to The Sunset Saloon to be among the first to own this new one!

Brock’s shows have been growing in popularity over the past 5 years, so I’m cautiously optimistic that this one could SELL OUT. Don’t delay, make your plans today to be here on Nov. 11 when Brock Zeman returns to The Sunset Saloon!

Even though this show is on a Sunday afternoon (seriously, I need to talk to someone about that. The world should really shut down Sundays 2-4 so that everyone can listen to the radio…), it features two of my favourite local performers/songwriters/people, and it’s for a great cause. I’ll have to pre-record anyway, so you might as well catch the podcast and check this show out!
