TTBTGH/Sunset Saloon news!

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is upon us once again, and it’s proving to be a pretty great one. Despite my loud and consistent complaining about this year’s lineup, it seems that perhaps, maybe, it is somehow possible that I may, might, there is a teeny tiny chance that I might have been just a tad, um, wrong. I know it sounds crazy, and it probably isn’t true, but there’s always a chance, right? (The stack of CDs in my backpack that I can’t possibly afford gives me some pause for reflection. You’ll hear some of the evidence on the show soon.)

Speaking of the Folk Festival, I’m out there for the final day of this year’s festival today, so won’t be live in the studio, but I do have an all new show loaded up and ready to go and on the website in the downloads section (http://tellthebandtogohome.com/2013/07/11/podcast-july-14-2013/) for you. On today’s show, we expose the truth about Danny Michel’s real first appearance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, play a bunch of new music from the mail bag, and we’ll get you primed as…

TTBTGH/Twang Trust, Danicin’ Eugene, and The Park Theatre are very excited to present Mary Gauthier with Scott Nolan and Joanna Miller in Winnipeg on July 22! I’ve been whining about this show not stopping in town for a long time, and with a little help from Stu, Eugene, and Erick, it’s now happening, and I REALLY don’t want you to miss it! You can get tickets now from Music Trader or The Park Theatre, or you can save on those annoying “convenience fees” by buying directly from ME! I’ve got tickets on me and I’d love to sell you one. Let me know if you want me to bring one to you or meet up with you somewhere, because I’d love to get more people confirmed and committed to this one. Scott and Jo open the show and then act as Mary’s backing band, and by all reports, it’s an amazing show, which I can’t wait to see. http://tellthebandtogohome.com/2013/07/11/mary-gauthier-wscott-nolan-joanna-miller-july-22/

And speaking of shows, all of the details are online about the next exciting show at The Sunset Saloon featuring Tannis Slimmon and Lewis Melville! This one will be amazing and I’d absolutely love it if you could make it part of your summer plans, August 14. http://tellthebandtogohome.com/2013/07/07/tannis-slimmon-sunset-saloon-aug-14/

I do hope that if you’re not out at the festival today you have a good excuse and have a great day. I also hope to see you out at one of those other amazing upcoming shows.
Put on some sun screen!

Sunset Saloon thanks, reflection, and previews & TTBTGH news!

Wow! It really happened and it was even more amazing than I dreamed it would be. One of my favourite bands, Odds, played in my back yard to a packed crowd of music lovers. Then there was the encore. Kevin McDonald (from Kids in the Hall, but he probably hates always being referred to that way, even though if it weren’t for that show, we wouldn’t refer to him at all. What a problem.) is an old friend of the band, and stopped in to watch the show and sit in with the band. We were warned to get the kids inside before they started, and with good reason. Here’s a front row point of view that I never could have anticipated. Viewer discretion is definitely advised:

Of course, Jeremy heard all of the laughing and commotion and promptly led poor Devin and Keri’s kids right out (don’t worry, we hustled them right back in.) Jeremy said to me today, “that bucky bucky bucky guy sure was funny!” Lucky for me, he’s got his dad’s hearing.

I can’t promise anything nearly as amusing as that performance at our next show, but it will definitely be amazing in its own right. Saturday night, Shannon Lyon returns. He’s got a whole pile of new songs and stories, and he will bring his powerful, personal performances and engaging personality to our back yard on July 6. I promise you a great time, and a whole lot less swearing. Please join us: http://tellthebandtogohome.com/2013/05/13/shannon-lyon-sunset-saloon-july-6/
We’re also looking ahead to the August 14th appearance by Tannis Slimmon and the legendary Lewis Melville. I’ve been chasing this show for years, and I’m so glad it’s finally happening. Come and see why I’m so excited! Full details to come. SOON!
On the radio front:
Tomorrow of course will primarily be a celebration of great Canadian music as it’ll be the official Canada Day show!
Looking ahead, on Thursday we’ll give away a pair of tickets to see an all-time favourite Folk Festival performer, Dan Bern, as he comes to Winnipeg a bit before the festival to perform his soundtrack to Jonathan Demme‘s “Wilderness Song” on Sunday, July 7 (http://wecc.ca/site09/performers/Dan_Bern.html.) This will be a truly unique performance featuring acting, music, film, and a whole lot of magic. This will be the first time this piece has been performed in Canada, and the only Canadian performance this year! It’s looking like we’ll be joined live, in-studio by Dan Bern the day of the show, as part of the OFFICIAL Winnipeg Folk Festival preview!
Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came out last night, and especially those who helped, supported, and to those silly people who sang to me. Thanks to everyone for the obligatory Facebook post this week; you’re wonderful. And thanks to you for reading this madness, and for tuning in, supporting the radio show, and coming to see great live music; you’re making the world a better place!
I’m tired!

TTBTGH/Sunset Saloon June news

Where does the time go? It’s the middle of June already!? How did that happen? It’s a good time to be alive and around great music. Here’s some news you can use to keep yourself in the right place at the right time.

Taking a cue from our friends at CKUW, although TTBTGH just turned 10 in the fall, we’re already turning 500! If they can go from 14 to 50, we can do one better. It’s the officially unofficial 500th episode of Tell the Band to Go Home this Sunday! It’s an amazing milestone for me. That’s 1000 hours of my life (more actually, because of all of those Christmas shows where we go 4, 5, 6 hours) – which according to the mathematicians at Google, equals 41 2/3 days! I don’t know if we really need a special episode again after the big one in the fall, but I’m open to suggestion. I got lazy and nervous and didn’t invite any special guests, but you never know who might be reading this and might want to come in or invite someone. Should we put together stats? Clips from the past? Highlights? Stories? You tell me!

I have to say a special thank you to all of you who have listened, supported, encouraged, and just made this crazy dream possible for this long. Most people get tired of me far sooner than many of you have, and although I worry about you for sticking around this long (don’t you have better things to do?) I sure am grateful. This show has changed my life forever, and I’ll always be grateful, and will always want to make it as enjoyable as possible for you!

Here’s a way to celebrate. Come to a Sunset Saloon show! These will be amazing, I assure you. Even if you’ve had enough amazing shows, come and snoop around in my closets, eat my food, spill beer on my floor, or just ask my family how they put up with me like they do!

March 7 on Steel Belted Radio – New Country Rehab!

ghost-coverWith a name like New Country Rehab, you know the Steel Belted Crew has to be fans, but they’re more than just a name, these guys are the real deal. Roots rockin’ country just the way we like it, with a killer live show and great songs to boot. They were a big hit at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a couple of years ago and have stopped in our town a couple of times and played to rave reviews.

This week they released a new album, “Ghost of your Charms,” which ups the ante with even better songs and even more amazing musicianship. This one’s bound to break this band wide open, so you’ll want to get on the bandwagon now.

They’re in town for their first show since the CD’s release, Thursday at Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club. It’s an intimate environment with just the right clientèle and atmosphere for rough around the edges powerful music like this. You won’t want to miss that show, I promise.

And, you’ll definitely want to tune in to Steel Belted Radio for a free preview when New Country Rehab drops by UMFM for some conversation and LIVE PERFORMANCES just before the show!

This will be good!

The Express and Company on Steel Belted Radio, Feb. 28!

It’s been a while since we’ve had any guests performing live on the shows, but tomorrow on Steel Belted Radio, we’ll break the silence with two stellar live guests!

Stephen Fearing has been kind enough to visit us a couple of times in the past, and it’s always a real pleasure. A thoughtful, intelligent interview and one of the great singer/songwriters in Canada, with an enviable catalogue of great songs and a reputation as one of our most engaging live performers. Stephen has a fine new album, Between Hurricanes, and he’s in Winnipeg to perform a solo show at The West End Cultural Centre on Friday.

Sadly, we must enact the Fred Eaglesmith clause on this one, which states that at any moment, a performer could decide not to hang out with the likes of me. Oh well. Better luck next time!

But we’ve still got:

One of my favourite discoveries of last year was a young singer/songwriter/fiddle player extraordinaire, Melissa Payne. She released a very promising self-titled debut full of interesting songs. But she also plays nicely with others, as she is one half of The Express and Company, along with singer/songwriter Dylan Ireland. Also tomorrow, we expect to announce where you can see The Express and Company live for yourself next month!

November 18 on TTBTGH!

Lots of exciting stuff coming up on the show today!

We’ll chat with James Murdoch, who’s headed to Winnipeg for a show with Jay Sparrow at The Sunset Saloon. These guys have been working hard on the road playing their fine album “Dominion Day,” and they’re finally headed home with one more stop. There will surely be stories from the road and we’ll learn more about how two songwriters with strong pop leanings came together to record a roots-rockin’ concept album.

Also, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings are rolling their Kings & Queens tour into town tonight, and since we love visiting with all of those guys, we’ll get one on the phone to tell us all about it! Looks like we’ll get one of our favourites and a regular guest on the show, Stephen Fearing on the line. He’s got a new album coming out in the new year and many different projects on the go, so we’ll surely find lots to talk about.

And, we’ve got new music coming at us from every direction with exciting new releases from Barney Bentall, Ron Hawkins & The Do Good Assassins, Paul Kelly, Andy Shauf, and a whole lot more!

That’s all today, November 18, 2-4 pm central on 101.5 UMFM, www.umfm.com!

The full story:

I like to support a lot of good causes. I’m a do-gooder. I’ve sold hundreds of pounds of beef to send a kid to Churchill, raised dough for my school in all kinds of weird ways, and I even rode a bike to Gimli and back to raise money for the MS Society, five times! I believe in all of those good causes and more, and I put my money where my mouth is.

But no cause has ever gripped my heart and soul like this one. The radio station that has given so much to me over the past 12 years or so needs a little bit of help, and damn it, I’ll move hell and high water to do what I can for the cause.

You see, I’d dreamed of being on the radio since I was a kid, listening to Howard Mandshein introduce me to amazing new music and talk to famous people. I never even thought that I’d someday be his sidekick on the radio. UMFM gave me that opportunity, and so much more.

It sounds stupid, I know, but this volunteer gig has changed my life forever in so many different ways. My family will always be first and foremost in my life, but I have to tell you, there are times when even they take a back seat to my role at UMFM. Doing these shows is something that I’m more passionate about than I could have ever imagined.

I’m a guy who gets bored pretty easily – for most of my life, I never kept a job, a relationship, an address, a vehicle, nothing for more than about 5 years at a time. But 12 years into my time at UMFM, I love it more and more every day, and I’ve never for a moment considered what life would be like without it. I spend most of my time thinking about what I’m going to play and talk about on my next show. I spend too much money on music for the shows. I spend way too much time researching, planning, promoting, and archiving my shows. It’s consuming, but never a chore; in fact, the more I do it, the more I want to do more with it. I’m hooked, and I’ve got it bad.

And it’s because of people like you. As a kid, I was a real loner, very few friends, didn’t have much to say, never wanting to be the centre of attention. I was that guy that you never knew existed in school. I was nobody.

But when I got to UMFM, I suddenly felt like somebody. There were all of these people, many of whom were even nerdier than me. I could sit and talk about music with people who understood and appreciated what I had to say. I got to sit across a desk from my idol Howard for years, and he regularly asked ME to jump in on an interview with some of the most famous and admired musicians in the world.

And that was just the beginning. In 2002, I inherited the Sunday afternoon slot from Lisa-Marie Serafin’s Songwriters’ Circle. I know that truly, Jeremy gets the title, but I kind of feel like Tell the Band to Go Home is my first born. Yeah, I stole a lot from Lisa-Marie, Howard, and a wee bit here and there from Stu Reid (please don’t tell him I said that), but it’s something that I felt was my own, and something that I was and still am insanely proud of and forever committed to.

It’s given me so many incredible opportunities. I got to be the manager/publicist for Easily Amused (which I sucked at, so they don’t talk to me to this day!), I got to organize incredible benefit shows for JP Hoe and The Times Change(d). I got to nervously introduce The Sadies at a sold out Pyramid show. I got to drive the Wailin’ Jennys’ tour bus and create a multi-media presentation for their CD release show. I got to host a stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and lots of shows at The West End Cultural Centre. I even had a song written about me (it’s been a while since we played the classic “Jeff Robson Brings Bruce Springsteen to Winnipeg!”)

And that brings me to you, my friend in music. Ron from Lockport is one such devoted character who’s become a friend and so much more (he spent Christmas morning with us last year, and donated the weird and wonderful items we’re auctioning off on eBay), then there’s Allison Green, the longest-standing, most devoted and passionate supporter any musician or music-lovin’ radio dude could wish for, of course there’s Big D, our Canadian music loving German superfan, Boyd & Jean, Zenon & Melissa, Rob & Laura, and so many others who have become true friends. For a guy who has never had many “real” friends, it’s incredible to think that I’m so closely connected with so many amazing people.

And the musicians! I truly believe that Del Barber and Christina Martin are among the finest songwriters in the world today, and they’re my friends. I can call them and count on them. I get to meet my heroes (even cranky Colin Hay and mumblin’ Martin Tielli), and I get to help hand out Canadian Folk Music Awards and Junos.

Me!

And it’s all thanks to a radio show with a goofy name. And there are dozens of incredible radio shows with goofy names on UMFM. All of them are programmed by passionate nerds like me. Each and every host treats their show like it’s an important member of the family (well, most of them, anyway…) We all work hard because it matters so much to us.

But it wouldn’t matter at all without you. Each of us has had that experience where we’ve heard some amazing music or an intelligent idea that really moved us somehow, and we want to provide those moments for you. We want to entertain you, educate you, humour you, inspire you, move you, and occasionally, anger you. We could easily sit and make mixed tapes for ourselves, but it’s so much more fun to connect with you and get you involved.

Pledge-O-Rama is your chance to get directly involved and take ownership of these shows and this station. No, you can’t actually buy Jared’s desk, but this week, we’ll let you name it! This is the point where we really need your help, and we really want to know that you think we’re important.

We don’t have to be your whole world, and you don’t have to pay the bills single-handedly. As much as it would make our lives so much simpler to find one rich benefactor willing to give us $20,000, it’s so much more fun and important to get lots of great people involved. I’d much rather have 20,000 people pay $1 each than have a big corporation give us the amount we’re looking for. To know that you think we’re worthy of some of your hard-earned money is huge reward, and it motivates us going forward.

If we’ve done something good for you, as you’ve done for us, we really would appreciate hearing from you this week. I know that some of you are shy and don’t like to call in all the time, but if just this once, you phoned and said that you were out there, and especially if you were willing to make a donation, HOWEVER SMALL, it would mean a lot.

Sure, we’ve got big prizes to thank folks who can afford to give us more. Honestly, it helps a lot to get those big ones, but for me, if you’re willing to give us $5 or $2 or just phone and say that you’re out there, that’s what I’m really hoping to get out of this week. I would love to know that UMFM matters to you. It means everything to me.

I’ll be down at UMFM answering phones on Saturday during my mentor and old friend John Prentice’s fine show, Planet Mainstage, and I’ll sit around on Sunday night during the great block of roots shows that follows TTBTGH. I’ll stay late on Thursday after Free Range Radio, and I’d love it if you called and showed your support for one of those great hosts and said hi to me. Of course, I’d love it a little more if you called in during one of my shows. TTBTGH has received overwhelming support in pre-pledging action. Steel Belted Radio could use a little love…

Thanks for reading this insane manifesto. Thanks for the encouragement and support over the years. Thanks for being my friend. And thanks so much for helping out UMFM’s Pledge-O-Rama. Let’s hug.

October 14 on TTBTGH

We’re pretty proud of our ability to get Winnipeg’s best and brightest singer/songwriters featured on Tell the Band to Go Home early and often, but every once in a while one slips by and doesn’t get featured on the show until well into a successful career. Such is the case with local singer/songwriter Don Amero who’s been out and about for a few years, putting out acclaimed albums and playing all over the place, somehow without much airtime on TTBTGH. Finally, we’re going to sit down with Don on this week’s show and talk about his new album and his unique CD Release concert, coming up Oct. 24.

This will also be your last chance to pre-pledge on TTBTGH for UMFM’s Pledge-O-Rama! We’ve already had a huge response to the pre-pledge campaign, but if you want to get in on the action and in on our last weekly prize draw for pre-pledgers, tune in or drop us a line! Check out the Music Angels page for more information on Pledge-O-Rama and the many prizes & incentives that you could get in return for your support!

Tune in Oct. 14, 2-4 pm central!

Steel Belted Radio, May 31, 2012

This week’s Steel Belted Radio is shaping up to be a really good one.

Our good friend Christina Martin always puts out great records, so it’s not a surprise that she’s got another winner, but her new one, Sleeping with a Stranger is so dynamite amazing, I can’t wait to play it for you. The time has come, and we’ll get Christina on the phone to chat about it and play the new album for the first time on radio anywhere!

We’ve got a heck of a giveaway, as UMFM is proud to support one of the hottest shows of the summer, when Deer Tick hits town next week at the West End. We’re super excited about this one. Check out more details along with some videos from last year’s Edmonton Folk Festival! Tune in to win on Thursday, 6:30 – 8 pm central on 101.5 UMFM, www.umfm.com or get your tickets now!

And, we’ve got killer new music! One of my favourite artists of the past 10 years or so is Shannon Lyon, and he’s got another great album, which you can get online for FREE (or you could be a swell music-supporting soul and pay for it, if you choose…)

Jaine beat me to the punch by finding this killer new song featuring NQ Arbuckle. Now, I’m telling you about it so that Stu Reid doesn’t beat me to playing it:

Here’s a new artist with a new song that I’m loving:

Happy 100th Birthday Woody!

Winnipeg’s leading lights in the folk music community invite you to celebrate the 100th birthday of prolific songwriter Woody Guthrie. On May 17 at the West End Cultural Centre join the Magnificent Sevens, Sweet Alibi, JD Edwards, Leonard Podolak, Tim Osmond, Lindsay Jane, and Hugo Torres Cereceda in honouring the work of Woody Guthrie which continues to lead and inspire others to change the world through song.

Tickets are $20 and available at West End Cultural Centre, Organic Planet, and Mondragon. The concert is presented by the MayWorks Festival of Labour and the Arts. Visit mayworks.org or call 947-2220 for details.

This Sunday on Tell the Band to Go Home, we will have a pair of tickets to give away for this exciting show!
