This weekend, CJUM 101.5 fm in Winnipeg presents a very special edition of
singer/songwriter show, “Tell The Band To Go Home,” featuring Winnipeg’s
own, Wailin’ Jennys
Just over a year ago on UMFM, listeners were treated to the very first
public performance of a group, which we have since come to know and love as
The Wailin’ Jennys. A week later, on January 18, 2002, three talented
singer/songwriters in their own right, Cara “Lovely” Luft, Nicky Mehta, and
Ruth Moody, did their very first concert together at Sled Dog Music in
Winnipeg, just for fun. The phenomenal response to that show, and one the
following night, proved that a magical formula had been found. With
irresistible charm, amazing harmonies, wonderful original songs, and some
well-chosen covers, the shows and the group were an immediate hit. Since
then, their debut self-titled EP has been a hit with campus and community
radio and the CBC all over the country. They’ve appeared at major folk
festivals across the country. Soon, they’ll be showcasing at The Folk
Alliance conference in Nashville, where they’ll no doubt be booked for even
more festivals this year.
But first, they’re returning to where it all began.

This week, we were lucky enough to hear from two fabulous guests who were in town putting on some really amazing shows. On Friday I was lucky enough to see Juno nominees, The Bill Hilly Band, perform at a shopping mall of all places just before they set up residence at our Festival Du Voyageur for four days of fun and music. Then on Saturday night, a wonderful show took place at The Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club in Winnipeg, featuring Calgary’s Kris Demeanor and the wild, wacky, and truly wonderful Geoff Berner from Vancouver. I was lucky enough to have Geoff Berner live in studio for almost an hour, and the gracious Chris Frye (Bill Guitar) from The Bill Hilly Band survived scheduling troubles and technical difficulties to appear via the telephone.

This week: In hour 1 I had scheduled a chat with the always entertaining Bob Snider, who’s doing a show in Winnipeg on Wednesday. A tip to working musicians, don’t count on that roadside phone booth actually being of any use on air… Poor Bob’s interview was a bit brief, but enjoyable if you don’t mind a painful hum in the background.
In hour 2, the lovely and talented Nicky Mehta was by to talk about a great event happening next Sunday in Winnipeg, a benefit for the Arts Can Circle. Nicky, of course, is soon to be a superstar as a member of the Wailin’ Jennys, but it’s always a treat to hear her solo.
We got a special present to warm our ears (even if the rest of us was frozen solid) as the show was extended for an extra hour this week. That meant that we could do a great, long interview with singer/songwriter/fun guy, Mike Plume about the crazy amount of projects he’s releasing in the next month or so. A new acoustic record with the band, a live record, and a DVD collection are all ready to roll out, and he’s even got a new solo record saved up for later on in the year! Is he nuts? We found out, along with the facts behind his decision to go it alone while the band pursues their rock star dreams as The Populars.

What a show! First, we heard tales from the train, as one of the lucky
souls who enjoyed the first Roots on the Rails travelling festival gave us a
first hand report. This was a wonderful festival held aboard a moving train
that travelled from Toronto to Vancouver. On board were Fred Eaglesmith and
his top notch band, Washboard Hank, David Olney, Serena Ryder, Winnipeg’s
own D Rangers, and a whole lot more. Fredhead “Lost Dog” called in on route
to yet another Fred Eaglesmith show.

Fred’s die hard fans come in two varieties. If you’ve ever seen Fred in
concert you’ve likely heard about the Fredheads and the Freddies. Fredheads
are folks like me that are huge Fred fans and are willing to travel great
distances to see Fred any chance we get and we’ll buy anything he’s selling
at the time, including his new Fred Eaglesmith tire gauges. We’re pretty
polite and respectful and generally just love the music. The Freddies, on
the other hand, are a little louder, a little redder around the collar, and
generally don’t have a good sense of decency or decorum. I always thought
that the Freddies were just one of Fred’s great jokes, but lo and behold,
the last time Fred was in town (last November) there was Freddy. After
every song, Freddy would yell out in his most inebriated voice PLAY ANOTHER
TRAIN SONG, regardless of whether Fred had just played a train song or not.
I hoped and prayed that I had seen the last of Freddy, but alas, there he
was, last week, tormenting poor confused David Olney who gave a wonderful
performance in Winnipeg a week ago. At a few key inappropriate moments in
the evening, there was Freddy again, PLAY ANOTHER TRAIN SONG! Well, turns
out David Olney doesn’t know a lot of train songs, but I sure do. This show
went out to Freddy! I did just what he asked and after every train song I
PLAYED ANOTHER TRAIN SONG.
But the train songs had to end, sorry Freddy. Near the end of the program I
was joined for the very first time by one of my very favourite Winnipeg
bands, Nathan. If you haven’t heard this group yet, boy are you in for a
pleasant surprise when you do. Last September they won a Prairie Music
Award for Best Independent Album, beating out Ian Tyson and a bunch of other
strong candidates. They won the regional contest in CBC’s Big Break contest
last year, and generally just amazed everyone who saw them at festivals and
concerts wherever they went. This year’s looking even more exciting for
this talented group. I finally managed to convince them to appear on the
show for some live music. But, as often happens… a bit of a lack of
communication amongst band members led to what turned out to be a monumental
event in Winnipeg radio history. Poor Shelly Bilewitch from the band didn’t
quite get her instructions straight, and she showed up at the University of
Winnipeg, instead of the University of Manitoba… Thankfully, the folks at
their station, CKUW 95.9 fm are some of the nicest people alive and they
went above and beyond the call of community friendship and hooked Shelly up
in their Studio B, and patched it into the phone so that she could not only
join in the interview, but she played along. One band, two radio stations,
one amazing radio moment. Thanks CKUW!! That’s got to be a first and it
shows the great relationship that campus and community stations are willing
to share amongst themselves. More than just music, that showed that radio

It was a special day for me as I finally got to see David Francey live in a full concert. I’ve been a big fan for years, and have had the great fortune to meet and speak with him before, but I was really looking forward to this concert, and he did not disappoint. So often when you’re so excited to see someone, it’s a letdown, but I think David and his band blew away even my most optimistic expectations. It doesn’t happen all that often at the West End Cultural Centre but the crowd gave David a hugely enthusiastic standing ovation before he left the stage for the night.
I had the great fortune of spending lots of time with David, as well as the wonderful and talented fellows in the band, Dave Clarke and Geoff Somers. What a treat to be around such kind and talented people. If you ever get the chance, check out David in concert, or at least buy his wonderful new album “Skating Rink” or Dave Clarke’s wonderful instrumental guitar album “Guitar Songs.” On the show, I spoke to David Francey on the phone from his hotel room, as he attempted to get some long overdue shut eye before the concert. If he performs that well and amazes so many people with so little sleep, I can only imagine what he can do at 100%.

This week was mostly devoted to honouring some of the finest female
singer/songwriters on Earth, in honour of a special visit by Ferron. That
night, she performed live in Winnipeg for the first time in 5 years, and was
supposed to perform on Tell The Band To Go Home for the first time ever.
Unfortunately, things don’t always go as planned on live radio, so Ferron
was MIA. The show was a ton of fun anyway, and Ferron’s concert was

This week I had the great pleasure of speaking for the very first time with
two very exciting artists with very bright futures.
There was so much great music last year, and I always hate to number my
“best of” list, but if I did, Harry Manx’s “Wise and Otherwise” would no
doubt be my favourite discovery of 2002. It’s the most refreshing,
listenable, and inspirational CD I think I’ve ever heard. This weekend I
finally spoke to Harry, and he’s just as wonderful and intelligent in
conversation as he is on CD. This guy is the most incredibly original
artist out there. Gee, there I go raving again.
This year’s top discovery so far is The Ladybird Sideshow. Four totally
divergent singing/songwriting styles combine to form a highly energetic and
enjoyable group. There’s the high energy rock/funk/fun of Erin Smith, the
energy and delightful attitude of Janine Stoll, the magnificent pop of
Melissa McClelland, and Lisa Winn, oh, Lisa Winn (folks, if you haven’t
heard Lisa’s new CD “Out From Under,” RUN on over to www.lisawinn.com.
Lisa, I’m blown away. I don’t mean to take anything away from the other
super talented girls, of course.) I spoke briefly with Erin Smith as the
girls traveled through the mountains on their Western Canadian tour, which
brought them to Winnipeg on May 15. These girls are wonderful on record,
but together in a live show, it’s fun and exciting, and totally totally
amazing. Don’t miss The Ladybird Sideshow (or any of its members) if they
come to your town.
Also, how could we forget the most important listeners of all, moms. It was
mother’s day and what better time to tell mom how much I love her than by
playing a few songs in her honour.

For the first time, I’ve pre-recorded a show! The weekend that this show airs, a few of my closest friends and I are going to singer/songwriter heaven, as we’re traveling to Alberta to see The Guitar Pull, which features Joe Ely, John Hiatt, Guy Clark, and Lyle Lovett! Wow. This one will be well worth the trip, even though I sure wish they’d come to Winnipeg. I’ll be going to see the show in Edmonton on Sunday night and Calgary on Monday, so I’ll be away for my usual time slot. I’m taking a bunch of my friends and devoted listeners with me, so lots of us will miss out on our favourite singer/songwriter show (:~) In honour of the road trip, and to thank my very knowledgeable friends for their support and assistance with the show, I invited a few of them in to program the show for me. Stu Reid, Terry Wilson, Gary Annable, and Mike Neufeld were in the host’s chair this week picking the tunes and having some fun. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to hear a lot of music that I wasn’t familiar with and some that I really need to rediscover again. This is a fun edition of the show! Well, if there’s one thing I love to do on my show, it’s celebrate. I’ll celebrate almost anything. Music is the best way that I can think of to celebrate, and I’ve got some great music to help celebrate a couple of great occasions. First, this week’s show marks the first anniversary of Tell The Band To Go Home. The show officially started under that name on September 29, 2002 with a live performance by Kris Demeanor and Chantal Vitalis, who were in town to celebrate the Prairie Music Awards. Well, this week Kris, Chantal, and I were in Regina for the very first Western Canadian Music Awards, but we caught up and hopefully thought fondly of that live performance while the listeners back home enjoyed an encore broadcast of that interview. Of course, we also had to run down some of the many talented nominees and bands showcasing at this year’s WCMA festivities.

I’ve been taking it kind of easy for a little while now on the show, and have been letting the music do the talking, and the interviews have kind of taken a back seat. Well, it was time to correct that oversight, and I think I did so in grand fashion by finally interviewing two artists who have amazed and impressed me for many years.
First up was the great Ken Whiteley. It’s safe to say that I’ve been listening to Ken for as long as I’ve been alive, first it was his backup work with Raffi, and in the past 5 years or so, I’ve discovered his marvellous solo work, along with that of the wonderful trio, Scarlett, Washington, and Whiteley. He’s not only one of this country’s most talented producers, arrangers, writers, and performers, but he’s also a fascinating guy to talk to, a great storyteller, and a really nice man. What a treat to speak with him.
Then, it was a guy from a whole different musical world, who I’ve also admired for years. Ten or eleven years ago, I was introduced to the music of a rock band called the Rheostatics, and I haven’t been quite the same since. Their music challenged me and spoke to me in a way that nobody else had previously, and they led me down the long road to music nerddom. Well, the band’s guitarist and one of the principle singers and songwriters, Martin Tielli, just released his second solo CD, Operation Infinite Joy, and he’s heading to Winnipeg on October 15, so it seemed like just the right time to finally interview this talented guy.

What a busy, busy week. Even if I had a four hour show (someday, someday…) I don’t think I could have fit in all the things I wanted to get done. The first hour was devoted to the week that was, and it started off by recalling some of the great concerts that have taken place in the past week. On Tuesday, I saw Steve Earle and the fabulous Garrison Starr, Wednesday it was Martin Tielli and Christine Fellows, and on Friday and Saturday I saw Fred Eaglesmith and the Flat Head Noodlers. What a week.
But it was also a great week for new releases, I picked up the brand new Lyle Lovett and the fabulous new tribute to The Louvin Brothers. I also finally got around to buying Oh Susanna’s new one (stellar) Steve Earle’s live one, and some others.
As if that weren’t enough (and as if I weren’t broke enough) I just got back from a dream vacation in the beautiful city of Halifax. Now that’s a town that’s made for me, music everywhere. In the space of the 5 days I was there, The Dears, The Silver Hearts, The Sadies, Carolyn Mark, and one of my favourites, Geoff Berner were all in town. And I missed them all. Sigh. But I didn’t miss any of the great music stores in Halifax, and I cleaned them out of some great stuff (bargains galore at the Sam The Record Man store downtown!) Chuck Prophet, Mark Browning, Willy Porter, Undertakin’ Daddies, and a bunch of others came back home with me.

Last night I went to a Scottish wedding. It was fun, but I think it made my Irish ancestors mad or something, because Murphy’s Law was in full effect this afternoon. I had two exciting interviews planned, one with Matt Mays and one with Paul Thorn. Neither one of them called as planned. As I scrambled to fill in that time, one of our CD players broke, leaving me with one CD player. It’s not easy to go from song to song when you’ve only got one CD player, but it certainly leaves you to develop some new thinking on your feet skills. You know, with winter weather in full effect in Winnipeg, you’d think that musicians would avoid our frosty city at all costs. Instead, we’re truly blessed to have an amazing number of great shows on the horizon. Last week we had Martin Sexton and Matt Mays/Sam Roberts performing on the same night at different venues (Matt Mays got my vote, and what a great show he put on. The Roberts kid I didn’t care for.) On November 26, I have a decision to make of epic proportions: Go see one of Canada’s best live bands, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings at the West End Cultural Centre, or go see an incredible bill featuring Serena Ryder, Oh Susanna, and the awesome Jim Bryson at the Pyramid Cabaret? Yikes. Today, it was an immense honour to welcome Colin Linden to the program to try and sway our votes toward the BARK show.
Two days after that conundrum, my old pal Geoff Berner is coming back to town on November 28. His last concert in Winnipeg will surely go down as one of the best of 2003, and his appearances on my show are among the highlights of this year for sure. I had hoped to welcome him to the show again, but sometimes things don’t quite go as planned. That’s when I enact “The Fred Eaglesmith Clause” which states that I cannot be held responsible for musicians who screw up, forget, fall asleep, or just generally don’t want to talk to me. I’m not sure which category Geoff falls into, but he didn’t call.
