That wacky Robbie Fulks starts us off on a set of rootsy covers of 80s & 90s
hits, but we dug ourselves out of that hole with some great new music. We
chatted about the next great show at Sunset Saloon, the upcoming Bonfire
Ball, and we paid tribute to the greatest rock band in history, 3 years
after their last full concert.

This week we hear from a bunch of artists who made (and inspired) great music in 2009. We talked about what they’re up to, but more importantly, we dedicated the show to our good friend Dietmar in Germany who is a tireless champion of the music that we love. I’ve learned the hard way that sometimes, it is indeed best not to meet your heroes. With this in mind, for some reason, I’ve purposely avoided talking to one of the greatest songwriters in the world, even though I see him all over the place and have heard that he’s a humble, decent dude. This week, I took my chances and chatted with John K Samson of The Weakerthans, and found that he is every bit as decent as I’ve heard. Phew. He kicks off a preview of an incredibly busy week in local shows, featuring John & Christine & friends, Dala (who also chatted with us from the road), Joe Pug, Cuff the Duke, Blue Rodeo, and more!

This week, we’re pre-taped, but boy have we got a great show for you in my absence. This is one of those timeless classic episodes that you won’t mind listening to over and over again. It doesn’t reference any particular time or date, all it does is contain some of the GREATEST MUSIC ON EARTH. We’ve got some old classics you haven’t heard in a while. We even have a theme! Yes, in response to all of those folks who (rightly) complain that we don’t play enough great female artists (although I swear, it’s pretty close!), this show is a He Said/She Said workshop featuring a full hour of male artists and a full hour of female artists. We’re keeping it even! And boy, are there some good ones to hear.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and we here don’t take this goofy, made up, greeting card “holiday” too seriously, so we’re glad to play some of the dark & twisted love songs that we most enjoy. On a more serious note, tomorrow is the second anniversary of the death of the great Willie P. Bennett, and since you can’t buy his music anywhere (a crying shame!), we’ve got to do our best to get it out there and keep it heard. We’re glad to do so and we promise to never stop.
