Playlist: Episode #902, Aug. 22, 2021: Quitters, Ghosts, & Where Are They Now

Every once in a while you notice that an artist or band that you loved or saw a bunch of times seems to be missing in action. Sometimes a band or artist will just give up the hectic, unpredictable, stressful, dangerous life of a touring musician, and sometimes they’ll just drop a little further off the radar, still making music that you might not necessarily even know about. This episode compiles some of those artists and bands and we track a few down and wonder about some others.

This is another in our long line of timeless “standby” episodes that you might hear again some day when I’m not able to come up with a new show. It’s full of great music, so I’m sure you won’t mind. Heck, you might just want to come back and revisit it on your own some time!

It’s our 900th episode and time to look back at the past hundred episodes since we last tallied up our most played artists a couple of years ago! It’s interesting to compare recent episodes to those cumulative totals, so we did some of that today, but we’ve also got some great new music to share and we chat about the Great Cycle Challenge Canada, going on now. Thanks to all of the generous sponsors so far. There’s still plenty of time to support the cause, so consider making a tax-deductable pledge here if you’re able: https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/JeffRobson

This month, I’ll be taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge, in support of SickKids, an organization trying to find a cure for childhood cancer. That sounds like a mighty amazing mission that I can get behind. If you’re able and willing, consider supporting the cause! https://greatcyclechallenge.ca/Riders/JeffRobson

Playlist: Episode #894, June 20, 2021 w/Andy Maize, Jason Schneider, Mark Logan, Lynn Jackson

Friday, June 18, 2021 marked five years since we lost our friend and namesake artist, Paul MacLeod. This show started as an avenue for talented artists like Paul to get some of the exposure that they so deserve. Paul was a friend and an inspiration and like a lot of people, I miss him and wish he could still be here. I put together a tribute to Paul for my other show, Fly with your Shadow, which I hope you’ll check out at flywithyourshadow.com or on the streaming service of your choice. Although that one was the longest episode of the show ever, I had much more left over, and it only seemed fitting that the tribute would spill over onto the show that he gave a name to. Today we’ll hear from Andy Maize of Paul’s former band Skydiggers, Jason Schneider, Mark Logan of Busted Flat Records, and Lynn Jackson. They’ll tell you which of Paul’s songs they loved the most and which of the hundreds of cover versions that he could perform were their favourites.

I’ve been super busy with that, so not much time to look up new music or even get through my Record Store Day purchases, so not much on the new side here, but I did find a few. The big news of the week is the imminent return of live music in Winnipeg, as The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club announced their outdoor summer concert series at Blue Note Park! That lineup of locals is stellar and well worth looking forward to, so I fit in as many highlights as I could today. I hope to see you there!
