This weekend I took a trip back to the 90s when I saw Spirit of the West in concert, and saw some folks I haven’t seen in a long time. This had me thinking about the good old days, and today’s show was loaded with retro nostalgic goodness, largely from Winnipeg’s consistently amazing music scene.

Steel Belted Radio – March 8, 2012

Dauphin Countryfest announced its lineup today, and along with the big-hatted crap, there are some real gems worth checking out, so a few of those to start us off. Yesterday was Townes Van Zandt’s birthday, and although we typically leave his songs to Tell the Band to Go Home, we’ve got a few rockin’ covers, as well as some great new stuff to spin. And speaking of new music, the hits just keep on coming, so we pull out a batch of new and upcoming releases sure to please your ears.

Steel Belted Radio – March 15, 2012

Pre-recorded this week, but well worth tuning in for. Tonight we’ve got some great new music, as well as some old classics we don’t get to hear often enough. We rock out a bit more than usual, hang out with Ryan Adams & friends, we get a little wordy & poetic, and, for no particular reason, we look back at a superstar folk fest workshop I saw years ago.

We’re pre-recorded this week, live from the living room, so Jeremy stops in, and we also dig down deep in the basement for some classics that I don’t regularly lug down to the station. We start things off with a birthday tribute to Mary Gauthier, before moving on to some songs from her former producer Gurf Morlix, as well as their collaborator, Patty Griffin. We’ve got some more great collaborations, and a look ahead to shows featuring Sprit of the West and New Country Rehab.

Even though it doesn’t feel like it outside, it’s sounding a lot like spring as many of our favourites are delivering new albums already, so today we heard a whole heap of exciting new releases, as well as some requests and dedications.

Today we pay tribute to Blaze Foley & Gurf Morlix, as well as visits with Greg Brown and the Thompson family. For hour 2, it’s a Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, as The Man in Black would have turned 80 today, and that’s reason enough to celebrate his (ever)lasting musical legacy.

We’ve got lots of new music and lots of tasty cover versions today (and some that fall into both categories). The new Shane Nicholson album had me climbing through the Nicholson/Chambers family tree which sent us off in various directions. We also took a trip to Austin, TX to visit the KGSR Broadcasts archive, and paid tribute to John Prine, who returns to town in May, and Willie P Bennett, who left us four years ago this past week.

Steel Belted Radio – Feb. 16, 2012

Continuing on with T-Bar’s LONG absence, we’re joined by a very special co-host tonight, as our old pal Ron from Lockport makes the trip down south to keep Mudge company and lighten things up. He even finally got to hear a song he’s been requesting for many years.
