Steel Belted Radio – May 23, 2013

It’s ramblin’ old Bobby D’s 72nd birthday tomorrow, and what else could we do but pay tribute in a way that only we can (or dare to.) There’s some reverence and some ridiculousness, of course. We’ve also got some world class Winnipeg music that’s every bit as great as that old coot, and a couple from the Canadian Bob Dylan (only better)!

Ah, the May long weekend is upon us at last. The weather’s ruining the party a bit, but hey, at least it’s not snow! We’ve got some great tunes to start the summer off right. First up some great new music before settling in to preview a couple of exciting shows this week, as well as some upcoming house concerts, real and imaginary. To end off the show, a tribute to a legendary cornerstone of the Canadian folk/roots community. Why? Because.

It’s Mom’s day, and it just wouldn’t be right not to pay tribute to those wonderful, giving people with some songs. We’ve also got some memories and inspiration courtesy of last night’s Skydiggers show, as well as BIG house concert news and previews!

Steel Belted Radio – May 9, 2013

It’s a good time for new music and upcoming shows, so some songs representing both are in order. One of the most exciting upcoming shows is the Winnipeg debut of Ben Kyle from Romantica, so we chat with him about the band, the solo career, the shows, and much more.

Today we hear from one of my all-time favourite artists and very favourite people, David Francey, about his amazing new album, its inspiration, and plans for the future. We’ve also got some fantastic new music and a couple of can’t-miss concerts to preview.

Steel Belted Radio – May 2, 2013

One of the greatest songwriters of all time, and one of the corner stones of our playlists, Paul Kelly returns on Monday, and if that ain’t cause for celebration, what could be? Sticking with Australia for a bit, we’ve got some music from Kasey & Shane, and we discuss those awful, untrue rumours spread by Stu Reid. We’ve also got a pile of new music that you won’t want to miss.

Always a pleasure to catch up with a couple of my favourite people and musicians, both of whom are coming to town this week, Christina Martin and Ruth Moody. Christina stops by The Sunset Saloon next Sunday while Ruth Moody stops in at home on Thursday night. Both ladies have wonderful latest albums and both are great to talk to. A real treat. Also, yesterday was Record Store Day and as usual I came home with a bag full of new tunes, so we had to spin some of those as well as a few new releases. Busy show!

I’ve done a lot of interviews over the past 12 or 13 years, but very few as moving, interesting, and memorable as today’s chat. And it’s with a guy that we’ve talked to many times before, Scott Nolan, who called us from the snowy road on the way back home after a marathon tour with Mary Gauthier. Thursday marks the premiere of his new documentary film, Chasing a Song. Besides that, we’ve got some upcoming shows and show news, and still a bit of time for some interesting new releases.

Wasn’t that a party? Corin Raymond & The Sundowners came to town to celebrate the release of Paper Nickels, and I was there for 2 out of the 3 shows. Magical. The project aims to expose great underappreciated songs & writers, so in true folk detective style, we’ve got some of the many songs that Corin played and recommended, as well as some friends and colleagues. On a more sombre note, this weekend marks the anniversary of the death of the late great John Bottomley, as well as the star-studded tribute to another great musician gone too soon, Jay Smith.
