Podcast: June 26, 2016 – in Loving Memory of Paul MacLeod

Episode #648

On Saturday, June 18, our namesake artist, Paul MacLeod passed away at his home in Ontario. Paul was a wonderfully funny and talented individual who brought a lot of light into a lot of lives. Today’s show is an overview of his recording career, from his first CD (called Tell the Band to Go Home) to the latest, including his time with Skydiggers. I’ll continue to share Paul’s music as long as I’m able. I didn’t know him all that well, but I’ll miss Paul a great deal.

Podcast: Steel Belted Radio – June 23, 2016

Today a listen to some of the more rockin’ side of singer/songwriter Paul MacLeod, who passed away this past weekend. He inspired and lent the name to my other show, Tell the Band to Go Home, so a longer tribute will follow on Sunday, but a few rockin’ ones for now. We’ve also got some great upcoming shows, a fine new release, and a set of solid Steel Belted classics!

Episode #647

Many great things have come to me as a result of hosting this show, but I don’t think that anything could match the latest. Last week I was invited to attend the inaugural Static Roots Festival in Germany, put together by long-time friends and supporters Dietmar and Marion Leibecke, and it was an absolutely incredible experience all around. Much of today’s show is guided by memories of that great event. But closer to home, there are some great shows coming up here in Winnipeg to talk about, and we still had time to play a pile of great new music!

Podcast: June 12, 2016 – To Germany, with Love

Episode #646

We’re pre-recorded this week because I’m off living a huge dream that I’ve had for many years by flying to Germany to meet our good friends Dietmar & Marion. They are kind, generous, wonderful people who have been HUGE supporters of UMFM and this program for a long time. In January, 2010, Dietmar found himself sick in the hospital, and to try and cheer him up, I invited a bunch of his friends to call in to the show and tell him how much his support means. Well, he’s turning 50 this weekend, so he clearly needs some cheering up again! Even if you don’t know Big D, you’ll enjoy the wonderful music and uplifting stories about someone who does a lot of good in this world.

Episode #645

We don’t pay much attention to sports around here, but when a significant cultural icon like Muhammad Ali dies, that’s worth taking notice of. Due to his impact on a wide swath of society, there are a lot of songs about Ali or that drop his name. And then there are the other songs about boxing. We’ve got a good helping of both today. We’ve also got some great new music and a couple of exciting shows to talk about, both near and far away!

Another show, another sad tribute. This week we found out that a true cultural icon and a tireless supporter of great Canadian talent has terminal brain cancer. Although we don’t generally play a lot of Tragically Hip on the show, today was definitely a day to break the rule and show some love and appreciation for a band that means so much to Canada. As if that weren’t enough, beloved local band The Duhks called it a day.

Episode #643

This show is built on a solid base of the greatest songs and greatest songwriters of all time, and this week we lost Guy Clark, who’s indisputably one of the best there ever was. The thing about Guy is that for every one of his timeless songs, there is a story about a funny run-in with Guy or about how someone has been influenced by him. Today we covered a mixture of both, with a bunch of his greatest songs, and some special guests calling in to swap stories about their brushes with greatness. We were fortunate enough to hear from Aaron Goss (of The D. Rangers), Mike Plume, and John Wort Hannam!
