Steel Belted Radio – April 1, 2010

Mudge is the lone Roots Rock Weirdo on this April Fool’s Day edition of Steel Belted Radio. KK does call in from the beach, but for the most part, Mudge is in charge with some April Fool’s Day tunes, a look ahead at Jason Collett’s Bonfire Ball, a musical trip to California, and some great new music recently acquired. We end off with the announcement of this year’s Trout Forest Music Festival lineup, and it’s a good one!

That wacky Robbie Fulks starts us off on a set of rootsy covers of 80s & 90s hits, but we dug ourselves out of that hole with some great new music. We chatted about the next great show at Sunset Saloon, the upcoming Bonfire Ball, and we paid tribute to the greatest rock band in history, 3 years after their last full concert.

This time it’s KK and the Mudge running the show as T-Bar is off visiting his probation officer or something. We had a special guest on air as KK’s niece Ryann is celebrating a birthday.

Halifax singer/songwriter Kev Corbett drops by to sing us some of his quirky songs and chat. We preview upcoming shows by the likes of Cameron Latimer, Kate Maki, and Brent Randall, and we play a special set for Lucy in honour of her upcoming unbirthday.

Steel Belted Radio – March 18, 2010

KK and the T-Bar take the reins this week as the Mudge gets stuck at work. Don’t worry, Mudge calls in near the end to straighten those kids out, but for the most part, they do a decent job of playing good tunes.

You know by now how excited I get when the Winnipeg Folk Festival lineup is announced, and this year, there is plenty to be excited about, with a ton of cool, interesting, unknown acts to look forward to. We spent plenty of time looking down the list and listening to some acts to catch this year. That only left a little time for upcoming shows and new music, but we got it in there!

A tribute to my recently departed nemesis, Bobb the cat, kicked us off with some kid-friendly cat songs and some more “music for the entire household.” Not being ones to kid around forever, we veered off into some more serious territory with some songs about violence, robbery, and going to hell (courtesy of a Clash tribute set). We also previewed upcoming shows by Ian Kelly and Ridley Bent. And, it’s Oscar time again, and although we don’t really give a hoot about movies, that Crazy Heart song and soundtrack are awesome, so we heard some of that and and a couple of other cinematic classics.

We’ve got plenty of music that’s new and notable this week. We also are treated to some brand new music from one of our favourites, Keri Latimer from Nathan, who stopped by after a long, long absence to play some of her new solo songs. And speaking of special guests, we were joined by a new co-host “Tony” who sounded a whole lot like our old pal Carter.

Not much notable this week other than the long-awaited return of the great David Francey. That’s always worth celebrating in song, so we sprinkled him throughout the show. The rest of the show was made up of new, interesting, and just plain wonderful music.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and we here don’t take this goofy, made up, greeting card “holiday” too seriously, so we’re glad to play some of the dark & twisted love songs that we most enjoy. On a more serious note, tomorrow is the second anniversary of the death of the great Willie P. Bennett, and since you can’t buy his music anywhere (a crying shame!), we’ve got to do our best to get it out there and keep it heard. We’re glad to do so and we promise to never stop.
