July 4, 2010

Ooops, in all of our summer haste/revelry, this podcast didn’t get posted when it should have…

Today we wish all of our American friends & listeners a happy Fourth of July, with a set of patriotic tunes by, for, and about the U.S.A. Closer to home (and our hearts), we’re only a week away from the Winnipeg Folk Festival, so it’s time for Part 2 of the OFFICIAL Winnipeg Folk Festival preview.

Today, we’re pre-recorded because I’m off riding in the MS Bike Tour, which sees me and a whole bunch of fit people ride from Stonewall to Gimli, and back again. So how does an overweight, out of shape, nerd like myself manage such a task? Why, with the right music, of course! Today, we take a listen to some of the songs in my “Motivators” playlist, which definitely rocks a little harder than we’re used to on a Sunday afternoon.

Plus, you’ve heard all those dog songs, even our pal Stu’s cat songs, but how about monkey songs! That’s right, in honour of one of the few words that Jeremy can actually say pretty clearly, he sits in on the show and plays a whole set of songs about his favourite animal (we think), monkeys!

We’re back, live, in-studio at long last, and boy, have we got a backlog of great new music to show off, including new ones from Leeroy Stagger, Luke Doucet, Ray Lamontagne, and more! We’ve also got tales from Edmonton Folk Fest, Trout Forest, and info on some upcoming shows as well!

Steel Belted Radio – August 12, 2010 – Christina Martin!

Pre-recorded because all good hearted folks are in my living room attending the Christina Martin house concert. But because not everyone can attend and because we’ve got her here anyway, Christina was kind enough to sit in on the recording of the show for some talk, some requests, and some live performances!

One more pre-record for Trout Forest Music Festival. This week’s show is an Edmonton Folk Fest wrapup with interviews with Joey Burns (Calexico), Colin Hay (Men at Work), and Brandi Carlile! Plus, we hear festival faves and a bunch of great new music!

Pre-recorded again, as we’re off at Edmonton Folk Festival. In honour of that, some songs about that fine city, and some of the many great artists performing there this year. We end off with some Trout Forest performers and a tribute to the late, great Paul Quarrington.

Another pre-recorded episode, but that allows for some special guest cameos from Carter & Jeremy. This week we got a bunch of great music in the mail from Australia, featuring Australia’s best, Paul Kelly. We played a bunch from Paul, a tribute to Paul Kelly, and a bunch of stuff from the upcoming Trout Forest Music Festival.

Pre-recorded because we’re off at Lucy’s wedding. You’ve heard my wonderful co-hosts Sophie/Elysha and Tony/Carter, but now, it’s baby Jeremy’s turn! He’s too young for a radio name, but he’s not too young to add lots to the show, as he babbled his way through almost the whole thing. What can I say; my boy’s a natural! Music? Yup, we’ve got that in spades. New Christina Martin! House concert wish list! And, a long, all-star tribute to “Winnipeg’s own” Neil Young, who brings his high-priced solo tour to town this week.

Steel Belted Radio – July 22, 2010 – NQ Arbuckle!

View playlist

This is a show we’ve long dreamed about – NQ Arbuckle is in the house. One of the finest songwriters on the planet, a heck of a good guy, and a bit of a mysterious non-traveler, we finally coaxed Arbuckle out west for a show, and dragged him into the studio to chat and sing a couple of his incredible songs.

This year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival was an exceptionally good one. On today’s program we talk with a couple of the best “new” discoveries of the festival, Gregory Alan Isakov and Hoots & Hellmouth. Plus, NQ Arbuckle is coming, and that’s always reason to celebrate. Speakin’ of celebrations, Lucy’s getting hitched on the weekend, and we’ve got some wedding/love songs to send her on her way.
