Episode #364

It’s Halloween, and although (for a change) we had a full show planned with tons of spooky & scary tunes to get the ghosts & goblins ready for the big day, I played a dirty trick on myself, and it definitely wasn’t a treat, I left my iPod and the entire show at home! What happens when a totally technology-dependent radio host tries to make up a show on the spot? Now that’s scary! Luckily, Del Barber dropped by to chat about his upcoming shows, and we bestow an annual honour upon him.

Steel Belted Radio – November 4, 2010

This week on Steel Belted Radio, we’re very excited to be welcoming an amazingly talented Winnipeg supergroup, The Hatcher Briggs Band. This combo features David Briggs, as well as Don, Paul, and Jeffrey Hatcher, and together they’ve made incredible music as The Fuse, The Six, The Big Beat (and a few other names that only Stu Reid remembers.) Of course, Jeffrey Hatcher went on to form The Blue Shadows with Billy Cowsill and put out two of the most amazing country/rock records of all time. He’s without a doubt one of the finest songwriters that our city ever produced, and that’s evident on last year’s tribute CD put together by Wendy Bird, called Natural Wonder, which features, among others, Elvis Costello. Jeffrey stopped by the studio once before, and I thought that it was one of the finer chats I’ve ever had on the air.

I can’t wait to chat with these boys and hear some of the new songs that they’ve been working on and are ready to unleash at two CD release shows at The Pyramid, November 12 and 13.

DO not miss this one folks!

October 17, 2010

Even though it’s still a couple months away, it seems like Christmas, because we got a heaping helping of new music in the mail this week, including a box of great new stuff from one of Canada’s best labels, Busted Flat Records. These add to an already impressive list of great new releases this year, but we all know that the releases go into hibernation this time of year. With that in mind, we tried to look at what might be the best release of 2010… and then realized that it was slightly premature. We did, however, manage to look at some great concerts, past and present.
