Joel Stewart is perhaps better known for promoting and supporting other people’s music through his long career in television, where he produced and directed countless music videos, concert specials, and programs for a who’s who of Canadian music. He ran CMT Canada for a number of years and was able to lend his talent and support to all kinds of Canadian talent. Maybe you even know him for creating the cult classic TV show Mississippi Snake Grabbers, starring Mike Plume as Mike the office manager. Probably not. Hopefully you’ve seen (or will see) his new feature film, Soul’s Road, starring Dallas Smith, who is a country music superstar and leader of grungy rock band Default.
We first met Joel last year around this time when he carved out some time to go on a tour with his longtime pal Mike Plume. We were familiar with his shows and videos, but not so much the music. Boy, were we missing out.
Perhaps it’s for the best that we were able to meet Joel and hear his songs in person early. He’s about as loveable and hilarious as anyone could be, and the strength of the lyrics really shines through in a solo setting.
His first album was recorded with the Mike Plume Band backing him up as his then-Future All Stars. It’s a solid debut for sure. He followed it up with an album featuring Mike and other Canadian music heavyweights. When he played here last year, he had only written one song in the previous 15 years, but he decided to play it for us.
We were blown away and hurried to tell him that after the show. We insisted that he record that song, even if it was just going to be a single, it had to be heard again. Instead, he got to work writing a bunch more.
That led to the February 27 release of Songs for Stadiums. This time, his Future All-Stars include Noel Webb, Josh Finlayson & Andy Maize (Skydiggers), Miranda Mulholland, Camille Stopps (one of the stars of Soul’s Road), Lyle Molzan (Corb Lund Band), Tim Veseley (Rheostatics/Violet Archers), John Borra, Jane Gowan (The Real Shade/Foster Motel/Music Buddy) and Winnipeg ringers John Baron, Joanna Miller, and Grant Siemens!
And what an album it is! It’s quickly become a favourite and a mainstay on Tell the Band to Go Home.
Songs for Stadiums, is available now on Bandcamp.
