Guests aplenty today. Lots of exciting young talent.

First up a brief visit by some talented young kids who call themselves Black Rose. They stopped by the studio to record a CD, and I can’t help but encourage that and let them on the radio.

Some old friends and show favourites, Easily Amused stopped by to play us some brand new songs and talk about their upcoming show at The West End on Friday.

Michael Johnston was supposed to stop by to chat about his upcoming show Thursday at The High & Lonesome Club, but a flat tire conspired to keep him at home. He called in for some phone-fun anyway.

This Canadian music junkie gets a little giddy this time of year, as we start to move toward Juno time. This year’s especially exciting, because my favourite local groups Nathan and The Wailin’ Jennys are facing off in the roots group category. I’m glad I don’t get to cast a vote, it would kill me to have to choose. I called up Keri McTighe of Nathan and Nicky Mehta of The Jennys to congratulate them.

Some people care about Valentine’s Day, but I think it’s the most meaningless non-holiday of the year. Somehow, the rest of the world and I met somewhere in the middle, with a set of love songs that aren’t quite so lovely, and a couple of true beauties.

Three! Three! Three shows in one! First off, we take care of a bit of business with some requests and stuff I’ve been meaning to play.

Show 1: Folk. People always assume that since I host a singer/songwriter show, it’s all about the folk. They usually find out otherwise. But sometimes I dig out the folkies and let them do their thing, like today.

Show 2: Country. Nothin’ like a cheatin’ heartbreakin’ country song, and we dished up some of the finest.

Steve Earle – Outlaw’s honeymoon – The Mountain

I don’t usually plan out shows very formally, but I put some thought into this one for some reason. I wanted to play some interesting covers of Steve Earle songs (especially Canadian ones, to please the CRTC), but to my surprise, I couldn’t find very many. Instead, I started a set with a great Earle cover and connected each song to the one before it. Unfortunately, I ran out of time (another thing I should maybe plan out some time), so the set was cut short, but had I the time, the meandering set would have led us right back where we began, somehow. Watch and learn:

Lucy Kaplansky – Somewhere out there – Ten Year Night
(Lucy Kaplansky is a member of Cry, Cry, Cry)
Cry Cry Cry – Fall on me – Cry, Cry, Cry
(Cry, Cry, Cry covered James Keelaghan’s “Cold Missouri Waters”)
James Keelaghan – Hillcrest mine – Then Again – CDN – WPG
(James Keelaghan covered David Francey’s “Red Winged Blackbird”)
David Francey – Wind in the wires – Torn Screen Door – CDN
(David Francey’s record was produced by the great Dave Clarke. Reid Jamieson’s album features the great drumming of Dave Clark.)
Reid Jamieson – Grass & dirt – The Unavoidable Truth – CDN
(Michael Johnston plays on Reid’s record)
Michael Johnston – The country north of Peterborough – Curious Heart – CDN – WPG
(Andy Maize sings on Michael Johnston’s album and Tannis Slimmon’s album)
Tannis Slimmon – My body moves – Oak Lake – CDN
(Tannis Simmon appears on and helped put together Sixty Second Songs)
Stephen Fearing – Whoville – Sixty Second Songs – CDN
and then I realized I was running out of time and threw this in:
Fred Eaglesmith – Things is changin’ – Things Is Changin’ – CDN

Had I more time, I would have played:
(Stephen Fearing plays in Andy White’s band sometimes and they’re good pals)
Andy White
(Stephen and Andy co-wrote a song on BARK)
Blackie & the Rodeo Kings
(Blackie & the Rodeo Kings formed in honour of Willie P. Bennett)
Willie P. Bennett
(Willie, of course, plays in Fred Eaglesmith’s band)
Fred Eaglesmith
(Fred has been covered by Dar Williams, who is also in Cry, Cry, Cry, along with Lucy Kaplansky who covered Steve Earle so well and started this whole mess off.)
