Standby Show 2012

This is one of those “standby” episodes that we put on the air in times when we can’t make it in and don’t have time to whip up something new. As such, it’s a timely one that doesn’t refer to anything new or upcoming, so it’s full of classics that stand the test of time. This one also attempts to pull out some of our favourites that we don’t hear often enough.

This is a BONUS episode, only avaialble online (for now), as it has not been aired and we aren’t even sure when we’ll need to play it, so enjoy this little online “extra.”

Fish & Bird @ The Cube Aug. 21, 2012

Our pals and former live guests on UMFM, Fish & Bird performed in Old Market Square at “The Cube” on August 21. After their set was finished, it was discovered that The Cube is damaged and it’s closed until further notice. Officially, it’s “wear and tear” but really, we suspect that Fish & Bird rocked so hard that they broke the thing. Now, if only they could break The Garrick…

Check out Fish & Bird online or the next time they come through town: fishandbird.ca

Shannon Lyon @ Sunset Saloon

Mudge has been hosting house concerts at Sunset Saloon for a few years now, and there have been plenty of highlights, but this year, Shannon Lyon made a stop and that was exciting indeed. We’ve been fans & supporters of Shannon Lyon’s music for years, and since he’s been living in Europe the whole time, opportunities to see him live have been few and far between. Well, he’s back and sounding as good as ever. Below are a few photos from the show in July.

For more, check out the post on the Tell the Band to Go Home site!

Make sure to check out Shannon’s website or visit his Bandcamp page to download his music.

Winnipeg Folk Festival 2012

As with every other year, the 2012 Winnipeg Folk Festival had plenty of highlights. Here are some photographic memories from this year:

Gimli Alternative Folk Festival

Every year Gimli’s Icelandic Festival features an “Alternative Folk Fest” which features some great performers in a low-key, entertaining evening, and best of all, it’s FREE. The Steel Belted crew are regulars out there, and this year was no exception.

This year’s lineup featured:
The Vopnfjords
Sweet Alibi
The Reverend Rambler
Lindy
Del Barber
Dry Bones

We got there a little late, so we missed the first two acts, but here’s how the rest looked:

Shred Kelly @ The Cube

On August 7, 2012, a promising roots rock band from Fernie, BC stopped by Winnipeg for a free concert at the Cube in Old Market Square. They’ve got a new record coming which was produced by John Critchley, who has produced all kinds of awesome albums from the likes of Elliott BROOD, Dan Mangan, and The Warped 45s. A mostly polite and appreciative crowd gathered, as did one out-of-place overly exuberant fan… Check out Shred Kelly online and go see them next time they hit town (just don’t stand right in front and give them the finger, ok?)

Regina Folk Festival 2012 Highlights

The Steel Belted Radio crew headed out to the Regina Folk Festival again this year. We used to go fairly regularly but it had been a few years since we all made it out together.

Here are some of our favourite photos from the event. For more of a wrap-up, check out the podcast of our August 16 show.

Hot Pick – Whitehorse

Whitehorse
The Fate of this World Depends on this Kiss
Six Shooter Records
out August 28

If, indeed, The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss, then we have nothing to fear, because the new Whitehorse album is absolutely amazing. It’s all of the brilliance and power that we’ve come to expect from Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, but yet, it’ll take you in directions you never could have expected. The album draws on the strengths they’ve shown as solo artists for years, and updates them into something entirely new and entirely amazing. Hard to believe, but Whitehorse is clearly better than the sum of its parts, and what talented parts they are. Kids, you’re going to love this one. It’s coming August 28, and you’re giong to want one ASAP.

Now, when are we going to get news of another local concert. Those dates in Saskatchewan are looking a little out of place…
