You know that on Tell the Band to Go Home we have Mandatory Stan, where we appease the CRTC by fulfilling our Stan Rogers quotient regularly. But Stan’s been gone for a long time now (coming up on 30 years!). Here’s your chance to own a piece of Stan – you can buy a CBC cheque stub where he wrote out his home address and phone number! It’s all in support of UMFM’s Pledge-O-Rama!
Stan Rogers is one of the most legendary and renowned singer/songwriters in Canadian history. His songs are revered as folk anthems, and are sung at folk festivals across Canada and around the world. He was an icon in life, but since his tragic death on board a plane in 1983, his legend has grown.
His debut album, “Fogerty’s Cove,” was released in 1977 and contains timeless classics like the title track, the beautiful love song “Forty-Five Years,” and candidate for the alternate Canadian national anthem, “Barrett’s Privateers.” Somewhere, tonight, there’s a campfire where a group of men is sipping rum and pretending they’re sailors, belting out the songs’s classic anthemic refrain. The album was recently re-released on Borealis Records in Canada, so this copy of the CD, on the original Fogerty’s Cove Music label is out of print and getting harder to come by.
But that’s not the real draw here. Included is a one-of-a-kind original autograph that Stan signed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in 1978. Approached by a fan and asked about perhaps coming to perform a concert in Gimli, Manitoba, Stan wanted to provide his contact info so that they could set up the gig at a later date; unable to find a suitable piece of paper, Stan pulled out a cheque stub that he’d recently received for his services recording for the CBC and wrote his name, address, and phone number on the back. (If you thought times were tough at the CBC now, imagine this – they paid the legendary Stan Rogers $60 to perform!)
This is the real deal, kept safe since 1978 – not a copy. Owing to its age, it’s worn and stained, but it’s touched by the hand of Stan, and so a very unique one-of-a-kind. This should probably be in a museum somewhere, but you can own it and display or preserve it however you wish!
As if owning this piece of Canadian folk music history isn’t enough, this auction is a benefit, with all proceeds going to a good cause.
